I was thinking of using the trub left in the secondary to another wheat beer. I think I would neeed to make a starter first with it. Could I do this in carboy by just adding a small amount of fresh wort or should I pull it out and make starter in a new container?

Thanking you in advance for your thoughts. After posting in this thread, please go enjoy a beer of your choice on you.

I have thought about using the following method, but never had the time or inclination.

Wort-

You can do it either way (starter or not), but I will usually make a starter if the yeast has been sitting or has been refridgerated.

I've done both ways with primary trub and just starters using secondary trub. If I can rack off primary and brew a new batch on the same day, I just dump the new wort right on the old yeast trub. Otherwise, i'll save it in a 1/2 gal jug and stick it in the fridge (kegerator) until I'm ready to use it, then make a starter a day or 2 before.

With secondary yeast, it's usually been sitting for a while. That right there is a reason to use a starter to bump up the number of new cells going into your new wort.

Another note, the secondary yeast is usually less flocculent than primary yeast (think about it -- it got into the 2ndary by NOT floccing into the primary). That doesn't mean that it's no good, it just means that over a few generations of secondary only you'll have less flocculent mother cells since those were the ones that were being "selected".
