View Full Version : Refig or freezer for fermenting?

Since the summers are so hot down here in Houston, I was thinking about buying a used refrig or freezer to ferment in. I would naturally attached a termostat controller to keep it in the proper range.

My real question is one better suited for this task than the other. I imagine I will have more luck finding a used frig than a freezer, but ya never know. I mainly brew ales but that might change if I get the right set up.

Any help in this matter would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance

From your nickname, I assume you are big enough to lift a full carboy into the freezer and lower it down to the bottom? If not, then the fridge may be the way to go.

I would think the freezer would be slightly more energy efficient, and most provide more space.

I've heard some people have trouble with condensation in the freezers, but that's not a major problem.

I think Jughead has it right.

The only other thing to add is that chest freezers won't lose all the cold air when the door is opened. Uprights do.
