Some tidbits on donation efforts at the Brick and RFD below. I hope the other N.O. breweries survive. Abita is going to take a massive hit just from lost inventory, but it looks like the brewery itself will be functional eventually, assuming the water supply is usable at all in the near future.

The bit about the not-closing of the Brick downstairs had me re-reading a couple times. I'm assuming they just mean that the upstairs is open for Sunday football, but it was a confounding roundabout way to get to the point!

Doors
open at 6, we will begin the evenings presentation at 7.

Item twice - The Brickskeller is CLOSING!
Yep, the rumors are true. The Brickskeller is closing her doors. After 47 years the unthinkable has happened. On Sunday, September 11th, those trying to enter our downstairs bar will find the door locked. However, if you walk up to the second floor entrance you will discover we are now showing NFL FOOTBALL IN OUR UPSTAIRS BAR ALL DAY EVERY SUNDAY FOR THE ENTIRE SEASON! YeahBABY! The upstairs bar is opening at 12 noon to allow all our football loving beer keg chuggin armchair huggin ballcoach mugging shirtsleeve tuggin waitstaff buggin spill on the ruggin beerguy buddin pals to watch the best football games in the best beer bar drinking the best beer on the best earth! The Brickskeller close? R U Kiddin? Do you believe the morning papers too?

Amigo tres – At least for the entire month of September, 5% of all
draught
beer sales at both the Brickskeller and RFD Washington will be donated to
the
Red Cross to help those affected by Katrina. The Brickskeller and RFD
Washington will match those totals collected from draught beer sales and
double the
contribution. So you can do two very good things at once. You can drink
great
beers from the keg and help those truly in need. A couple ex Brickies live
in New Orleans, we haven’t had communication with them yet but we will
continue trying. Those wishing to personally contribute are urged to visit
this
website and do what they can –

Dave has always had a um 'disarming' sense of humor...

I echo the sentiments about supporting the breweries down there. By the way does anyone know if Tabasco was effected by this? Arent they based way down on the bayou like actually next to a marsh?

Looks like the Tabasco site is housed in or around N.O. and is down, but Google has the following cached presumably from before it went down:

McIlhenny Company is operating normally and the production of TABASCO® brand products are unaffected by the recent hurricane. Our New Orleans office employees are all accounted for and have been relocated to our Corporate Office on Avery Island, Louisiana. That number is 337-365-8173.

I guess Avery was far enough away (west?) to avoid the brunt. Man, I figured any barrier island would have been demolished.

Strike that, Avery Island is not a barrier island like I had pictured in my mind's eye all these years. You learn something new every day!

Yeah I was thinking the same thing.

By the way, that event announced in Dave's email newsletter is actually on the 25th and not the 18th.

Or as Dave said: "I had a brain cloud. The actual correct date of the Beaumont dinner is SUNDAY September 25th. Sheesh."

I've gotta say, The Bricks and Dave have collected a huge amount of donations over the years for Childrens Hospital. Their hearts are in the right place. Kudos to them for trying to help out.

Avery Island is just south of me (Lafayette) and is in the south-central bit of Louisiana.

It appears abita had some slight damage and their power is restored, however, they lost 6000 barrels of beer [sniffle] due to the lack of refridgeration for almost a week. Employees are to report to work on the 12th, so they'll be pumping out beer pretty soon. I have a feeling the fall seasonal might not make the stores. As long as the winter bock is ready, I'll be excited

More hurricane aid options for hungry people in this area:

Chef’s Fundraiser for New Orleans Refugees—SEPTEMBER 12 11am- 3pm

Po’Boy Sandwiches starting at $25 and UP it if you want!
Acadiana- 901 New York Avenue- Look for the banner- Po’Boy Power Pick- Up!

A group of high-profile chefs and restaurateurs here in Washington is donating its time, food, and energy to raise money for New Orleans, in sympathy with all the victims of Hurricane Katrina, especially their fellow food and restaurant workers who have lost their livelihoods and so much more. We’re hoping the movement will go national. We’re doing it with Po’ Boys, the beloved New Orleans sandwich.

Here’s our rallying cry: “PO’ BOY POWER
Dress New Orleans Again!”

At any New Orleans po’ boy joint, you order your oyster or roast beef sandwich “dressed” – with lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise, and hot sauce. Our goal is to raise money, not just to revive the city, but to bring it back as good as it can possibly be – “dressed.”

Acadiana restaurant, a Louisiana-style fish house opening this September, right in the heart of the nation’s capital, will become the po’ boy headquarters of the fundraising effort. On September 12, from 11 am-
3 pm, Chef Jeff Tunks (DC Coast, TenPenh, Ceiba and Acadiana) and his chef friends Robert Wiedmaier (Marcel’s), Michel Richard (Citronelle), Roberto Donna (Galileo), Ris Lacoste (1789), Cesare Lanfranconi (Tosca), Frank Morales (Zola), Todd Gray (Equinox), Cathal Armstrong (Restaurant Eve), RJ Cooper (Vidalia), John Besh (Restaurant August, New Orleans), Jeff Buben (Vidalia and Bistro Bis), Kevin Scott (New Orleans Bistro), John Wabeck (Firefly), Bryan Voltaggio (Charlie Palmer Steak DC) to name a few, will make brown bag carry-out po’ boys (Shrimp Remoulade and Roast Beef) for a donation starting at $25 per po’boy or you can give more! Look for the banner on 901 New York Avenue that says “Po’ Boy Pickup.” Come stand in line and get ’em to go!

Please call Simone Rathlé for details and please contact us if you can get involved:
(703) 534-8100 – (703) 534-8102 – (800) 496-1733 simonepr@aol.com or simoneink@aol.com

“There is no question. This food is what we know and love, these people are who we care about, and this is what we can do to help,” says Tunks. His ties to New Orleans are strong – he lived for four years there – even got married there – and, most recently, “I was just down there, getting to know local purveyors, farmers, and fishermen who were to supply Acadiana. We’ve been in constant contact all summer. Now they’re just gone.”

The first food donors on board are Congressional Seafood and Dairy Land. All proceeds from this fundraiser will be given to the Louisiana Disaster Recovery Foundation (established by Governor Kathleen Blanco).

As a New Orleans native and long-time culinary industry professional, I know first-hand how the disastrous hurricane has affected my family, their homes, and businesses. New Orleans’ legendary cuisine, such a tremendously important part of the city’s industry and economy, has always been the lifeblood of countless food-service workers, from busboys to restaurateurs – who have now lost everything.

Help us get the word out. Help Dress New Orleans AGAIN! Thanks y’all!
