View Full Version : Why isn't Newcastle bottled in brown or green?

Just wondering if anyone out there knows why Newcastle is bottled in clear bottles instead of green or brown?

The first time I ever tried this was in a college bar from draught and it was excellent! I have since tried to duplicate it homebrewing and have made excellent beers in the process. However, the bottled version I buy does not taste the same. In fact some times it is down right bad.

I think that this may be mainly due to the use of non-colored bottles. As a homebrewer, we get it drilled into our heads that this is a major no-no. So why do they do it?

Newcastle Brown is a rather poor beer - that's why it doesn't taste much good!

It may be that, years ago it was OK (I never drank it in the "old days" as I live in the South of England and Newcastle Brown originated from Newcastle, in the far North of England).

It's now brewed by a mega-brewer - Scottish and Newcastle - and like most of the products of the large brewers is predicably mundane.

There are many other brown ales of far better quality; stick to them.

Incidentally, I don't think the colour of the bottle has anything to do with it; beer isn't usually kept long enough for this to be a problem
