Whilst not as bad as it could be it's a shame that a very succesful independent can't resist the consolidation onslaught.

While I like Greene King's Abbot Ale much, I am still saddened to see an independent go. I hope Greene KIng lives up to it's promises. The Belhaven we could get here in the states is also a fine beer. I have not had it in ages.

Have you ever tasted their (GC's) IPA? This is bad news, IMO. But then, I've never really been a fan of abbot.

Yes, I have had their IPA and concur with you. I'm also not overly fond of the Speckled Hen. But Abbot Ale was the beer that first drew me to England. I visited Greene King way back in the 80s And the brewer was astonished that anyone would want to tour a brewery so he showed us through. Once again, I'm certain I have pictures but I'll have to locate them and scan them.

I also have a collection of Greene King breweriana. A samll colection. Probably 60-70 items.
