Some good news for those of us who have found the brew from this pub to be a little sub-par as of late. While at the Great Taste a week ago I happened upon the Flatlander's table only to discover an old home-brew club colleague pouring beer - and discovered he's been hired on to help with brewing tasks!

Art Steinhoff has been home-brewing for more years than most of us have attempted the craft. He's had "I Brew" on his license plates for the 16 years I've known him and I've been lucky enough to have sampled many a good beer from his basement brewery. Art brewed some of the best stuff at the now defunct Brewmaster's Brewery and Pub in Kenosha, WI and I expect some even better brews from Lincolnshire very soon (and yes - he loves cask conditioned ales as much as lagers).

Sounds like I'll have to give it another shot. To bad about Brewmasters, I guess the cheeseheads didn't know a good thing right in their own backyard.

Been closed for a couple years now -- and it wasn't the doing of the K-Town customers, bad management.

Girlfriend and I went to Flatlander's this weekend and had a sampler of all the beers. The seasonal specialties (kolsch, wheat, and t'mave pivo) were our favorites. Had a pint of the t'mave pivo, a czech dark lager. Had a good roasty malt flavor to it. The honest abe tasted like it had some bad hops in it but everything else was OK. I hear Art is a hophead so maybe I'll go back after he brews something more our style. I'm starting work this week just up the street so I'll be able to stop in for pints after work but honestly I'd rather go down to Ram. I like their IPA and porter.

Angela was disappointed with the food menu, not one vegetarian entree!

Give Art some time to settle in, he likes his hops, but he's also a stickler for style - I have the feeling that you'll soon not even care the Ram is there (a place I can really pass on myself).

AFA no veggie, talk to the manager - I'm really surprised that they haven't thought about that, so many places have menu items these days, FL needs to catch up.

Here's the executive chef's e-mail: chefsapo@ffrestaurants.com

I hope their beers do improve because I'd like to have a good brewpub to go to regularly and right now none of them are making the cut.

Just to make you drool, IL, we went to Coopersmith's yesterday afternoon - I had the Not Brown Ale (this was really good, steveh - wish more browns were like this!) with my Ring Of Fire vegan burger, and a Horsetooth Stout Float for dessert. YUUMMMMMMMMMMMM........ :D

On a brief aside to steveh, I finally did a side-by-side with 90 and Moose Drool, and I can see why you like Moose Drool so much. And comparing the two, I have a better appreciation for Moose Drool - but it's still no 90!

Yeah that Not Brown was one of my faves at Coop's. And Big Sky is going to be at the Great Lakes BrewFest in Racine so I'm looking forward to having some Moose Drool up there. I had one this summer while I was in MN and it was tasty. I still don't see why you love the 90 so much. Maybe I didn't get a good one or it's just not my style but I really didn't taste anything worth getting excited about. I'm glad you like it though, Odell's seemed like a cool brewery with nice people.

HH, you can get the Drool at Woodman's, just over the line into Kenosha - right at I94 and Route 50. Probably the closest source for New Glarus as well.

See, I get to talk about TWO things that I love here: beer and post counts (JK :D ).

Hey - anyone notice that the grinning smiley looks like the Cleveland Indians logo? (http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/images/team_logos/50x50/cle.gif)

Ken and I must try Flatlanders again then. Steve, do they have cask conditioned beer there?

I'll have to try that place on 50 and 94, too. That's the way we drive to my Dad's home in Wisconsin so it would be easy to stop in there.

We had a couple of really nice Russian beers at the Russian Tea Room today.

Yeah, Flatlander's had 2 cask conditioned beers last time I went in.

Ken and I went there tonight, and though it was only 11:00 p.m., it was closed! I thought I was in England! Anyway, we were quite disappointed. I suppose we should have called, but I didn't expect that a bar woudl be closed at that time of night. The bartender did let us try the cask stout, though, and while I don't like stouts that much, Ken thought it quite smooth and nice. They apparently were out of their Abe (is that right?) that also was on cask.

So...we will try again!

Sorry for dredging up and old post.. but I was just wondering, how is the Locomotive Stout?

I go there once a week ($2 tuesdays) with a friend of mine from work. He just recently started drinking real beer and Guiness was his favorite beer until he tried the Locomotive, which is now his favorite. He absolutely loves the s#!+. I drink it occasionally and it is quite good. Pours with a nice thick head that has a sweet chocolately flavor. If you like stouts, you'll like this one. I don't recommend the cask conditioned stout though. I had a taste of it and it had a very strong fruity sourness that I did not like. They have a porter right now that's real good too.

Oh and by the way, no need to apologize for dredging up an old post. I like it when people bring back old posts. Just because we stopped talking about a topic 2 months ago doesn't mean it shouldn't be brought up again.
