So I went last night to return my (overpriced) sixtels of DFH. They told me that since I had the kegs longer than 7 days they've chaged my card the deposit amount and they said "the kegs are now yours". 1. They didn't tell me about their 7 day rule when I bought them (and it's a stupid rule; hey we're insisting your drink quantity fast!), 2. the kegs aren't mine, they're not even theirs they belong to the brewery or in this case Microstar. 3. for good or ill the amount of deposit charged doesn't begin to cover the actual cost of the kegs.

This all comes on the heels of the bad experience when I picked these up in the first place. I went to get a 1/2bbl of Fordham which they told me was in stock, but I get there and they did't have it so I feel a bit bait & switched on.

I've contacted Microstar and explained the situation and will report back what they say. I told them I want to get their kegs back to them but also would like my deposit back. I realize most of this isnt' their problem, but I've got the kegs, which do me no good, and Dixie has my money, which is doing them plenty of good.

I hope I can get my cash back ,but failing that I'd like to give Dixie my deposit's worth of bad publicity.

Man! That really stinks. I'll not patronize Dixie because of it. How much was the deposit? Wonder if they would have taken them if you were buying a new keg. Hmmmm. Maybe next keg you get of DFH you can get at the brewery and use the keg as a trade in?

I think you should also post this on DCbeer.

The deposit was only $20/per, which is not bad as far as deposits go, though it's also not much motivation to return the beasts.

I will say this Microstar was unbelievably quick in their response. Maybe 15 minutes from sending the E-mail. They were going to have me just UPS 'em back, but I said I could drop 'em in the system somewhere in DC. If I take 'em back to the distributor and get a reciept they'll give me my cash back. Not too shabby (and they were very friendly).

Takem back to DFH and use them to cover your next deposit there. The one I got from them was also microstar. Also, Old Dominion might be interested in them as they seem to be fairly concerned with returns. (I've got one for them at home.) They are worried that home brewers would keep them.

And I still say you should post about Dixie on DCbeer.

Dominion isn't part of Mircrostar so it's not going to do them any good.

I just posted to the DC beer list.

Right. Most breweries clean their own but in the case of the 1/6bbl kegs some farm them out. Microstar leases clean kegs to breweries who then collect and return them for re-cleaning and re-distribution. In this case, OD does their own and had no relationship with Microstar.
