see , i knew i'd get it from someone for throwing those two together, the lager family tree has more then a few branches of it own, to which i am fully aware, o'fest/marzen (sp?), vienna, pilsner, dortmunder, bocks....ect, ect, ect and dare i say??? "DARE, DARE!" .......malt liquor ! ouch!) so i didn't want to get too carried away. it would've been almost impossible for me to name every style of beer out there, and i wonder if there's anyone who could?

The list Trinity keeps on their website is rarely current. When was the last time you were in? I can say with authority that they've gone downhill over the past year or so. They've never been very consistent with quality beer, but many have been a horrible mess lately. Surprisingly, the usually steadfast and boring Union Station, just down the road, has really been turning things around since last summer. Nice 80 IBU IPA, solid Porters and Stouts, even a decent Trippel. Trinity needs to improve and catch up or suffer!
Cheers!

Just goes to show you that one needs to keep up with what's going on. I haven't been to Trinity in a few years now but I always made a point of it when in Providence (is Apsara's still around?). The darker beers there were always very good, though according to your report things may not be so good now. Shame.

Oh man, I love this!
1. Pilsner: Lagunitas or Victory Prima if I'm in the U.S., if I were Emperor of the World it would be Pivovarsky Dum
2. Barleywine--Bigfoot kicks ass, but goddamned if Anchor's Old Foghorn didn't just completely seduce me. Awesome.
3. Bock/Double/Triple--Salvator (that's a BIG goddamned beer) or Dead Guy, or definitely Uff Da Bock
4. wheat--Anchor Summer Wheat or Great Dane Crop Circle Wheat (gotta shout out to the Hefeweizen)
5. lambic--don't know
6. Stout--hmmm. Young's Double Choc fuckin' slayed me. SN's is a killer. I dunno. There are SO many good stouts in the U.S. Hell, ALL of Kalamazoo's stouts blow me away.
7. Belgian double/trippel--I guess any Chimay; isn't that Belgian?
8. Porter--Anchor Porter
9. Pale Ale--Anchor Liberty
10. IPA--maybe Summit IPA, New Glarus Hearty Hop; I don't seek out the style
I sure do like Anchor. My favorite brewery, I think.

Herold is great! I think their vycepni, or desitka (10-degree beer, whereas Prazdroj is dvanactka, or 12-degree) is the best one I've had. Blows Gambrinus' ass away.
By the way...10-degrees, 12-degrees, whatever, measures gravity. Is that a usual scale? Every Czech knows 10 and 12 but I don't think they really know what it means.

I spent about an hour at the beer store yesterday looking for new stuff to try and I remembered Herlold being mentioned here so I picked up their Schwarzbier (13 deg.) and it's outstanding! So smooth and sweet. And yes, degrees plato is a common scale for measuring gravity. Many microbrews, like Rogue, list the gravity in deg. plato on the packaging. Of course Rogue also lists the Apparent Attenuation, deg. Lovibond, and International Bitterness Units on their packaging which I don't know anyone else who does. Their website also lists all the ingredients that go into each of their brews. They're a very homebrew oriented brewery, imo. **End Rogue Advertisement**

The Herold black is not a scwarzbier, it is in fact a Czech Black Lager, which is sweeter, and uses debittered malts for color. In the Czech Republic is is called "T'mave," which means dark. MJ has taken to calling this style "Prager."

The bottle I have says herold Bohemian Black Lager, Cerny Lezak, Schwarzbier. I didn't see the T'mave at my store but I'm sure they make one. Flatlanders had a T'mave Pivo this summer and it tasted really good too but it wasn't as dark and was sweeter than a Schwarzbier, like you said.

"tmavé" (no apostrophe) or "cerné" (black). Why "Prager"?

Sladek, thanks for the correction! As for the name "Prager," I presume it is MJ's attempt to define a style based on its type and primary location, e.g. Prague Lager.

Aha. Well, the Czech black beer is made all over the country, of course. But a famous one is made in Prague, U Fleku, which you might know (and ashamed to admit that I've never been there, probably because it's touristy). Anyway, huzzah for Herold!
Just so everybody knows, I'm not Czech, just been living in Prague for a while and love Czech beer, but getting a bit tired of the usual ubiquitous beers. There is a rare Czech ALE, by the way; I've bought it once, the bottle was bad, so I haven't really had it yet.

However I am almost sure numbers 4 and 6 will not change.:)
Additionally, I am a bit unclear about the different types of beer, so i do not know where to place the types I have tried on this list. I will update the list as I find out.
