View Full Version : What is you limit?
One of the reasons I like real beer is not only do you learn about great beer, but also it promotes responsible drinking. Most of us know when to say when. When is that for you? I think I'm at the low end. This is base on a few hours after eating. My limit is 4. I mostly stop at 3, but I can can go to 4 The last time I did 5 I did a little stumble step.

 Jake, I can suck em down, 8+... But I never drink and drive! I lost my Mom in a drunk driving accident, and worked over 8 years on an ambulance. I've seen the carnage that irresponsible drink can thrust on innocent victims... But, my average consumption is two or three, unless it's a raging party night or special occasion...

i said 6 or 7, since i had 8 last night and have a small headache this morning. it was another family reunion (our 3rd in the past month!) I took a sixer of Great Lakes Eliot Ness (6%) with me and a couple Moerlein Lagers. "Beer" was being provided and pretty much assumed it meant they would have some kind of "ass on tap." It was Mich Light so I'm glad I brought my own.

Weekend evening.

:p On a weekend evening when I've been partying with my friends/family, I may imbibe 12... Is this irresponsible? I don't thinks so, I'm not an asshole when I drink, I don't drink and drive, etc. A bit excessive? Not really, you have to remember, the ass on tap here is only 3.2%...
Roger "Doc".
For me 12 beers would be irresponsible, but each persons alcohol tolerance is not an exact science.
I did not think about alcohol %. I was thinking in the 4.5%-6% range. At 3.2% I think I could drink a 6 pack.
I had a Utah beer called Elephant Hill Hefeneizen. I was thinking Bristlecome Brown Ale was another but I could be wrong. I cannot find that beer on BA to see who brews that beer.

 Hmmm, Jake to be honest I don't know who brews it... I'll look around and see if I can find out. Oh on the limit thing, I'm 6 ft tall and weigh 300 Lbs, so my tolerance is a bit higher... Imbibing a twelver is an all night endeavor for me, and one I rarely undertake... Usually it's just a couple, and many nights none.

I have no idea how to vote in this poll. I need measurements in gallons!
:D
3 pints in less than an hour and I will not drive. 1.5 oz of alcohol per hour regardless of the type pretty much maintains a good buzz for me.

I didn't even vote because it's so variable for me. We don't go to bars anymore; however, if my wife and I are takin' it easy around the house watching a movie with the kids, we may knock back four or more in an evening, which almost invariably ends at 10PM (we're old farts). Haven't been to a bar at night in probably five years. If we're fortunate enough to be taking our lunch at a brewpub, I MIGHT have two--and rarely three, if they're good and the wife's driving. Now if I'm pulling an all-day yardwork weekend, I might knock back a twelver of my favorite cheap swill, but that's usually a nearly all-day process, and we're talking 3.2 or approximate beer. In no circumstance will I get behind the wheel drunk, and I too am not an asshole when inebriated. At least, I don't think I am:D ...

I quite often will have 1 or 2 during the week and that can get upped to 4 or 5 on the weekend depending on when I open the first beer on Saturday. It still translates to one an hour for the most part.

I have a nice beer with dinner every night during the work week. On weekends or days off a beer with lunch and the when ever I like. But I never drink more than 2 together. I separate them out pretty well. I have not had a buzz in quite a while. Probably 3 or 4 beers per day on non work days.

It certainly depends on factors like ABV and what foods in my stomach, but 4 is about average. I've had days where I felt silly on my first sip of a high grav. ale, others where I seem to simply 'sweat it out' and don't catch any sort of buzz.

I put 8+ because the question was about my limit, not my average.
I tend to drink at a fairly steady pace and not get too drunk. The longer I stay out/up the more I drink, but at a pace which simply staves off sobriety, rather than getting dribbling drunk.
On average I will have one or two beers, usually with my dinner. One or two nights a week, usually weekend nights, I might drink anything from 4 to 10 beers (the 10 end of things is pretty rare), depending on where I am, who I'm with, the phase of the moon, etc.
I don't drive at all, so drink driving is not an issue.

I have an alter-persona I call the BeerWolf. Most nights I have one to two beers and I never see him. Other nights he comes out and rears his ugly head and then who knows... I know he's done with me when the wife says "You're slurring, go away." or the kids are otherwise laughing at me. I suspect not having a keg fridge at home would make his appearance a little less frequent.

1-2 not even drinking
3-4 having a drink
5-6 it's a session, we're having a time

As far as outside limit, I'd guess 10-12 though I have done more.

I'm not proud of it but my daily limit is definitely 12+. It depends on what time I start, length of time I'm drinking, and alcohol %. Just last weekend I put down at least 12 with most of them being 7% IPAs and a couple 8-10% barleys also. Of course my girlfriend found me sleeping on the front step with my dog at 7:30 in the morning. Last thing I remember was smoking a cigar and drinking a couple Titans while watching the sunrise. It was a good night for sure.

I've actually cut back my intake quite a bit recently (for various reasons) and have dropped below my weight when I graduated college...23 years ago! Between 12 - 14 pounds. No, it's probably not just the beer, I've been eating better too. Now, does anyone know about this exercise thing?

Wow, Steveh, you hit the nail on the head. The diet I maintain during the week is flawless (excluding weekends; weekends I go nuts), and with all the excercise I'm doing regularly now, I've dropped 40 lbs. in the past year. In consideration of how much muscle I've put on, I've probably lost upwards of 70 lbs. of fat - all without a single protein shake, metabolic enhancer, or light beer! Okay, so maybe fewer light beers than I have fingers, but not by choice...
Unfortunately, as I'm only 2 years out of college, this has its deterrents - mainly that I still think I can drink like I did in college. If I'm drinking on a weeknight, 4-6 is usually my limit; any more and I'm going to regret it the next day. On a weekend, however, all bets are off. 12+ on a full(er) stomach is not unheard of.

I do not drink beer every night. But I'm seriously overweight because I eat out a lot and sometimes eat snack foods like chips.
I'm 5'11" and weigh 234. I'm pre hypertensive and the doc said to cut back on salt and lose 20lbs. Which I have not done. But....Our brand new building that we just moved into has a brand spanking new gym for tenants. It is free but you have to have a programmed access card. Which I and my employees do. It has big screen TV's, saunas, showers, locker room, and lots of top of the line equiptment and it is almost always empty. (Our building is still mostly empty.) So I'm going to start going down there in the afternoons. I belong to Lifetime Fitness Centers but I never go because I can't do it first thing in the morning and I am too tired in the evenings. So what better time than at work?

I'll one-up you, Chaz. Even with all the effort, I'm still only 5'7" and 310. I tend to think it's more about your muscle/fat ratio and cardiovascular level than about actual weight. My goal is 250, which if I hit at the rate I'm going, I'll defy anyone to call me unhealthy.
I know plenty of people that go before, during, and after work; it just depends on what type of person you are. The thought of getting up before 5 3 days a week doesn't thrill me, nor does the prospect of taking 3 hours out of my work day to drive to the gym, lift, run, shower, get dressed, and drive back to work again, so I suck it up and go after work.

I been cycling to work to save a bit of gas money and also to get back into a shape some...
I was up to 230 (6'2") and have gotten back down to an easy 220. Better yet, by resting heart rate has drop from the high 60's to the low 50's.
However, that said, this summer was difficult for me weight wise (even with the cycling) because I was working so much on my dissertation that I ate out a lot....mostly comfort food too. I've turned a corner with the completion of the beast and expect to shed another 5-10 pounds this month.

You must have been fooled by the baggy clothes, they hide my beer gut. I don't exercise but I do manual labor at work and I skateboard almost everyday. I try to eat healthful meals too but we end up having beer and bread and cheese or pizza at least one night a week. Sharp cheddar cheese with hoppy IPAs is just too good to resist!
However, my girlfriend gets up at 4am almost everyday she

Well folks, my doctor called last night with the results of my blood tests from my recent physical and while everything looks real good all around, it appears my triglycerides are pretty high - and most likely a direct result of -- beer. Gasp.
Yeah, looks like it's time to seriously cut back - with some changes happening in my life, and the age I'm at, I think I need to heed this advice seriously. I also think it won't be so difficult, since I realize I'm probably consuming too much during a week anyway. I've already cut back and can really see the results over the last few months, 12 - 14 pounds worth.
Does this mesn no more beer? Of course not, it just means a more conscious effort to be more responsible and realistic. And exercise, and eating healthier...bleah, I guess I really am old. ;)

I always take issue with the people that say, "Teenagers need to realize that they're not invincible." That's so misguiding! True, of course, but misguiding. The fact of the matter is that you're pretty damned unbreakable until about 21-22. After that, things start getting creaky. Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it, beer silences the creaks for a bit. That is, until you realize beer itself is probably causing a few of 'em.

So I am finding myself trying to cut back on meat and cheese, and I love my red meat. Married into a family that raises cattle. :D Plus I have gout which the first thing they tell yuu is to cut out any form of alcohol. Luckly they can control it with allopurinol which has been on the market for years. My granddad and dad had to take it and that controls it pretty well plus as with all things moderation.

This one is an hard one to answer, since I have not tried to get to the limit.
My preference is to have something to eat along with my brew, in which case it can take about 6, or possibly 8 if the food is good.
If I am just drinking, then 4 would probably be the limit.
On average, I never have more than two or three beers, regardless of the situation (food or no food).

This weight/health issue seems to be hitting all of us. I joined a gym last April, because of the weight issue, and began a very aggressive workout routine. The trainer limited me to a maximum of two beers a day, but I actually haven't even been drinking on that level since then. During this time, I have lost a total of 21 pounds and feel really good. I am still aiming to lose another 20 or so pounds.
Now....as to what my real limit is....well....last weekend, hanging out with the fellas from 6 until 1 in the morning, I easily drank 10-12 beers.
I too been on a diet. I'm now 200 lbs. As you can see from my 9/9 post I've drop 17 pounds. I have not cut back on my beer at all, but the stuff I like to eat after drinking like chips and things.

limit as in...won't drive? or passing the threshold of when you consider yourself drunk?
for not driving, it takes about 3 or 4 beers for me to keep the car keys in my pocket.
for the "drunk" threshold, well over 8 beers....somewhere around 14-15. Below that, I'm pretty buzzed. It also depends on what I ate, too. If I didn't have much to eat that day, it might only be 12 or so beers.

I have for the last few years had a limit of two beers in a twenty-four hour period. The reason is the biblical mandate against drunkeness. In my youth, in the Army, I drank until passed out everynight. My father and all his brothers are alcoholics, so I figure it is best not to lose control. Besides this way I have taught my kids that beer and wine are to enjoy, taste wise, not to induce altered states of consciousness. With a son going into college I want him to know the binge drinkers are idiots.
It all depends on what day of the week it is for me. During the week, I usually stick to 4 or so beers. If I'm brewing during the weekend (or not), I usually drink alot more. I also enjoy a very dry Martini, or several, during the weekend. By dry I mean, chilled Kettle One. :)

During the week I rarely have over 2 pints. On Friday night I may have 7 or 8 with the wife, but only if we stay home. And it also depends on what I'm drinking. 6 of my Belgian strong ales will put me completely under the table, but 10 or 12 Guiness Stouts barely creates a buzz.

I can't believe how many guys only have a limit of a couple beers. Are you guys just being modest? Well I work third shift at get out of work at 7 am. Usually on Saturdays we stop and have a couple pints of Hoegaarden or something somewhat light. If I'm off that night I might have 3-4 but I'm there for 3 or 4 hours. Then I'll nap and drink plenty from 3pm till midnight. I usually dont drink tons, but I dont see it unreasonable to drink 12+ beers in a day when you're awake so long. I guess it's a tad different for me with my crazy schedule. Usually on off days I still drink 5-6. If it's a beer like Trois Pistoles obviously less.

Since I started homebrewing and drinking quality store boughts, the emphasis is not on hammering back beer until I can't stand up. That happens once in a great while, but mostly I drink a couple in the evening while I'm doing chores around the house or watching TV. It's only when we have friends over that I'll drink more than a couple of beers. Last night I had 2 pints of Imy imperial stout, but just so I could get some CO2 into the keg.

I may be exxagerating-9 bareley creates a buzz, 10 slightly, 12 I know it. Actually it would take all day to drink that many Guiness. The brewpub in Artesia has a stout-3.9% ABV. Tasty, but not very strong.
And the limit is not how many wwe "can" drink, it's how many we enjoy drinking. Put a gun to my head and say "don't stop drinking until I tell you to" and I can hold my own. I just choose not to.

surprised at all the light drinkers out there.
just recently i had to stop drinking because I'm having some kind of allergic reaction to beer/wine.. i've never felt better in my life, i've changed my diet, have more energy than ever before and i'm overall a happier person (dont get me wrong, the moment i figure out what is wrong i will be back to my old beer drinking self)
but that being said...
i was drinking 3-5 nights per week, most week nights 4-6 beers and on the weekend it is not uncommon to drink easily 12+ in one session (wheather it be starting at noon and going all day, or just an evening out with the friends.) We've all been drinking quite heavily for most of the past 10 years so we are used to tipping them back, and unfortunately getting hung over. Most of the beer we drink is Belgian. Its no surprise for us to each drink 3-5 bombers of Belgian beer. As you can imagine we get pretty smashed up on a regular basis.

I can't believe how many guys only have a limit of a couple beers. Are you guys just being modest?
Some sound like the coneheads from the old Saturday Night Live: "Consume mass quantities."
I had my days of drinking heavy and being hung over every night. But I have several reasons for greatly reducing my consumption--some of which I've mentioned before (my job and my faith) but let me give you a couple more.
Where I live, the beer I like costs about $6.99 per six pack. With the amounts listed by some others, I calculated about 6 six packs a week. That's $41.94 a week or $167 a month or $2004 a year. I have a wife and three kids and that same money would buy alot of necessities for them. Priorities!
Second, once you get satiated you are no longer really tasting the beer, but merely drinking to drink. I drink because I like the taste of beer and not just to drink. If I am no longer really tasting it then why keep drinking it? I have no interest in having a buzz--been there, done that, got the broken bones and scars to remind me. As a matter of fact, once I feel a buzz coming on I switch to iced tea for the rest of the night.
Third, for me drinking has a great deal of social value and enhances fellowship. Drunken revelry is not my idea of fun so I avoid it, and those who practice it, like the plague.
Fourth, I love my family! I see too many people who place a lower priority on their family than on their own pleasure--I work at a prison!
For the sake of my wallet, my friendships, my faith, my wife and my children, I practice discipline in this area even more than in others. The man I demonstrate to my son is the man he will become. The man I demonstrate to my daughter is the man she will marry. I want that man to be sober and responsible so I must be such a man.
Besides, I find beer is much more pleasurable when it is not mixed with the bile of a guilty conscience. So long as I practice what I know to be right then I get the maximum pleasure from my choice of beer.
I'll get off the soap-box now.

My limit is about 6 or 7, but if pressed I can go to about 10. It depends on the style of beer.

Anything past six and im all over the place, I do love a nice cold beer, but it doesnt love me on the big sessions. Got a biggy coming up the end of the month when we finish uni, startin at 12 midday and going on till the wee small hours of the next day, as much as id love to be drinking beer then, ill have to stick with the cider. Im expecting to shift at least 12 pints of magners that day, cider just doesnt touch me. strange:eek:

Why not go with a nice mild. Something like Woodfordes Wherry or even Coniston Bluebird on cask. Both are wonderful real ales and can be supped for the session. I'm thinking both clock in around 3.8 percent on cask.
Congrats early for your impending graduation.

What kind of beer are you speaking of?
There's a world of difference between a 4.5% Mild Ale, & a 12% Barleywine. You're comparing apples & oranges here.
All beers are not created equally.

Hey Triple Freak, I saw you on the morebeer forum. Some guy was going off on you for telling him it was a bad idea to use Chambord for flavoring beer. I thought it was funny because the night before I read that I was pouring Chambord into a chocolate oatmeal stout and it tasted awesome. Welcome to Realbeer.
And cheers to all the heavy drinkers out there! (As I nurse my hangover with a homebrewed maibock)

What i meant to say was that, the ale in my local is not well kept, more often than not, you will get a bad pint, either they dont clean the lines regilarly or they dont leave the barrel to settle properly.... or something along those lines, so the ale there is pretty poor, which leaves only tetleys, worthington, or lager. and out of those three lager is about the only drink that is any good. Tetleys is nice, but inly if its cold, once the beer warms up its noot great at all. I do enjoy HSD when im at home in cornwall.

Yeah, I remember that. That guy wanted to prime homebrew with Chambord. I told him it was a bad idea because he didn't know how much sugar was in it. All he wanted, if memory serves, was a raspberry flavoring when he bottled his homebrew. I mentioned using raspberry extract, and promptly had my head taken off for only suggesting he try something a little less expensive. Oh, well, water under the bridge. If you don't want different opinions, why bother asking?

Too much is undefined here...
- ABV?
- How many ounces is "one"?
- How long a period of time?
- Do I need to drive home?
- Is this a business event?
- Am I among friends?
I used to be able to kill better than a case and a half of pisswater in an evening when I was in my twenties. A tradition where I went to school was the "piss call:" Break into another fraternity late at night, bang on room doors until they open, and hand them a beer with the greeting "drink it or wear it." The piss part comes an hour later when your bladder wakes you up again. The house across the street (don't worry, we set it on fire twice with bottlerockets) piss called us once the night before midterms. They made the unfortunate mistake of coming to my room first. I had no gen ed classes, so took their kettle full of beer (about ten quarts), slammed it, handed it back, asked them if they had more, and when they said they didn't, I thoroughly insulted their manhood and lineage and told them that if they hadn't come better prepared they had to get the f~~~ out my house. I think that's my limit.
I no longer drink cheap beer, and I won't insult a homebrewer (including myself) when I can no longer tell the difference. I no longer know what my "limit" is, and its not important to know.
When I am out for an evening and have to drive home, I'll put the buzz on quick and then sober up ther rest of the night. I enjoy my buzz early and then let the amateurs entertain me. I am fortunate to have several neighbors that are good friends. Our houses are close enough that we can slither home from each others' places.
If I am out on business, I don't let myself get more than a beer beyond driving-capable. Too many things can go too wrong. If I ever needed to trim a workforce, I'd just have a daylong open bar party. I think I'd have enough reasons to fire damn near half the attendees by 9 PM.
My final rule is that I will only get significantly buzzed among trusted friends. I want to know I'd be treated with respect even if I fell asleep on the couch.
