Hello All,
Last weekend I brewed a DFH 90 Minute IPA clone. I messed up a calculation so my yield is about 3.5 gallons instead of 5. Oops. I stopped sparging so that I wouldn't drop my gravity to low. Funny I got more evaporation then I counted on and was a bit higher then expected :-)
I am going to try again this weekend. In the interest of being a cheapskate I decided to try and save some yeast from last weeks attempt. I have never attempted culture or reuse before just because of the fear of contamination.
I racked the beer into secondary and made a yeast starter in a flask. When the beer was done the siphon I attempted with my thief to steal some of the slurry. No joy couldn't get that deep and turning the carboy on the side didn't help :-( So in the interest of doing it quick and not having exposure to to the outside air for to long I just picked the carboy up and dumped about 3 X the amount of slurry that is in a wyeast smack pack into the flask with the starter wort.
Is this an ok way to do it or do I have a high chance of contamination?
Thanks!
