I was looking to get a second sixtel for my kegerator last Friday. So I thought I'd head over to Milton, Delaware (From Ocean City, MD) and visit Dog Fish Head. Turns out they have tours on Fridays and Mondays at 3:00 so I was just in time. Nice tour. Sam C. was there and he spoke to the crowd about his history and expansion plans. This brewery is really growing! Anyway I sampled about 4 of the beers and had intended to buy a sixtel of the 60 Minute. (Love those Amarillo Hops! They also use Warrier and another that I can't recall.) Anyway, I ended up picking up a sixtel of Raison de Etra. I have not been a huge fan of this beer in the bottle and have avoided it at the brewpub. My mistake. I sampled some on the tour tasting and it was devine. I really liked it. So I gambled on a sixtel. I did not hook it up as it got shaken a bit when I carried it but I'm putting it on next weekend when Im back in OC. I'll post my impressions then. I'd really recommend getting out to the Milton facility (About 15-20 minutes from the brewpub in Rehobeth). Oh and the sixtel cost me $30.00.

That's quite remarkable and here's why: in this area DFH 1/6s START at $65 and you can't argue proximity since the same volume of beer, purchased at the Delaware pub in growlers, would have cost at least that.

$10.00 deposit on the keg too. (So it was actually $40.00 but eventually I'll get the deposit back.) I found a beer and spirits store in OC nearly across from my place that had a sixtel of 60 Minute. The guy at the register was not certain of the price but told me $50.00. They also had several other sixtels in the cooler. He said they mainly carried them to supply the attached bar. I decided to wait on that one as I figured the brewery would have a fresher keg. But now I know I have options in O.C. too. I have been bringing sixtels out from Old Dominion which is near my home. I have the Pale Ale on right now. The Raison de Etra will join it next Friday evening.

am I correct in assuming "sixtel" is your way of saying 1/6 barrel?? is that a technically correct term? thanks.

I've been off the Raison for a while. I think there's something not quite right compared to what it was a couple of years back.
As far as price that's hard to beat, I think I paid $79 for a sixtel.

I'm messing around with making a 60 clone and I think the other they use, at least for the 60 and 90, is Simcoe.

I was never a real fan of this beer before. When they first introduced it I had it at a festival and I thought it was not worthy of the hype. It may have been the beers I had before it as it was near the end of that session. I subsequently had it in the bottle and still could not see what all the clamor was for. Of the many times I've been in the brewpub I have avoided it and had mostly written it off (as I have the recent samples of Aprihop.) It was one of the samples that they offered on the tour so I tried it and it was wonderful. I really hope the sixtel is as good. At any rate, Hard to go wrong for $30.00. Deposit was $10.00.

When I first had it I thought it was one of the best beers in America. I used to be one of my wife's favorites too. It just isn't near the same. It's not nearly "round" enough and it's gained something a vinous character that it didn't have or was at least very mild.

I thought it was excellent at the brewery. I was actually a bit stunned. It was certainly one of the best beers I had had in a while. My sixtel had a date of 8-1 on the collar. (I'm hoping that was not the expiration.) I'll give my impression next weekend when I tap it.

It was only $30? Are you sure?
I went there (the Rehoboth brewpub) this weekend and was looking forward to filling a growler or two, and they wanted at least $15 per fill, which I thought was ridiculous. A pity, too, because the 90 minute was really good.

$15 just to fill the growler? I hope DFH isn't beginning to let the hype about their beers get to them.
Starting to sound like they are achieving "cult wine" status - for those of you that also are in to wine.

Oh, they go way higher than that. One of their fruit mead-barleywine-lambis wierdos ar 21%ABV is $48 a growler, or something like ten bucks a pint. I walked in with two empty growlers and walked out with two empty growlers.

That was the Forte. Not really surprised at the price on that; seemed to be going for about as much as the WWS, comparitively. I'll give them some leeway on the limited release, 20+% offerings.
But they have dramtically increased their prices for there regular rotation. I distinctly remember going in for a growler of Aprihop in the summer of 2003 and paying no more than $10 for the fill. A couple weeks ago it was, I think, $14.

In/around the summer of 2002 I think I paid $7, maybe $8, for the Shelter. That too has gone up to over $10. Considering I can get a growler of NRPA from OD for $6 which is a far superior beer, imo, I think they are starting to outpace themselves, beach resort or not. It's actually cheaper now to buy a sixer at the liquor store and avoid fighting traffic to the pub altogether.

I bought some growlers last summer at the pub and was astonished when the bill came back. I did not bother to check prices before I ordered. But I have recently eaten in the pub and the published price was high. I though way out of line with most places. Especially since most come in at 7 bucks. But Yes $30.00 for beer and $10.00 for the deposit at the Milton brewery. This was during the tour last Friday. And as I have mentioned the Liquor store attached to the Galaxy bar / restauraunt in Ocean City had a sixtel of 60 minute that they were willing to sell for $50.00 which is still cheap. I;m not sure if the price I paid at the brewery was out of the ordinary or unusual but that is what I paid.
Any of you DC folks who travel to Rehobeth, If you get down to Ocean City, Give me a PM. I'll invite you buy to sample Old Dominion Pale Ale and Raison De Etra from my kegerator or whatever else I might have on.

Not that you'll need this since you have a kegerator at the beach, but I just got an email from Old Dominion saying they are selling off their remaining Summer cases for $18 each.
The email came with a two dollar coupon, so you can get it for $16 (looked like that was unlimited amount).
