In the interest of getting a beer fridge, but I want something more than a "dorm fridge" for the basement.
In my search, came across the Skybox by Maytag (I'll try attaching a picture to help illustrate). Just curious if anyone has any opinions re: its usefulness as a gimmick beer dispensing device? Or, better yet, anyone have one?

It looks like that will only work with 12 oz cans? If that is true wouldn't that be severely limiting what you could but in it besides B/M/C?

According to the on-line description at Home Depot, it can handle cans and bottles (both glass and plastic).
I read one on-line review where the reviewer said he uses it with the Guiness pub cans too.

If it's for your basement - go with one of these! (http://www.brewrats.org/walkin.cfm)

That may be overkill.

Maytag would be the family of Fritz Maytag, owner of the Anchor Brewing Co.

My beer fridge is a very large dorm fridge - holds about 3 cases of bottled beer at a time, maybe a little more. There's no freezer at all, so no wasted space. Puts out a fair amount of heat, though. Here's the link to what I have. (http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=APPL&pid=04695499000&subcat=Compact+Refrigerators) Worth a look - and there's a special part of the inside of the door that holds/dispenses 7 12 oz. cans. How much is your skybox going to run you, and how much will it hold?

The unit, stand and personalization (can't decide between going with the Philadelphia Eagles or Duke Basketball) will run me $600 and will hold 32 bottles of beer.
Looks like the decision will come down to being practical & inexpensive vs. gimmick and costly.
I already know which way the wife is going to vote...
Of course, I could go with the idea from Hogiewan's post and just tell her I'm building her a big walk-in closet for the basement?

it would be a walk in closet - a refrigerated walk in beer closet

I went to a local appliance store and got the cheapest full-sized fridge they had, with the freezer over the fridge. Nothing fancy, no ice-maker, nothing like that. The fridge is great because it'll hold 4 or 5 cases of beer easily, I can fit a case of bottles in the door alone. I forget the name, I think it's German-sounding, begins with an H.
And the freezer is useful, because we use it as overflow, like for the large bags of chicken breasts from Costco, tubs of ice cream, popsicles and freezer-ices for our kids, etc. That saves a lot of room in the kitchen fridge for the every-day stuff.

Haier...we bought a Haier. I think it was one of their apartment-sized fridges. Nothing too big, holds plenty of beer. Doesn't take up much room.

I'm going for the rookie skybox in my bar (which used to be the dining room) And of course it will have the World Champion Red Sox Front on it

Yes.
They are also the same folks as Maytag Bleu Cheese.
