Beer News

We a couple of new beers coming tomorrow from the Russian River Brewing
Company, as well as a beer from the Czech Republic that like Czechvar
(Budvar), claims rights to the name “Budweiser.” Come by Friday after
work and we’ll let you taste and compare!

New (Friday arrival)! Anderson Valley Summer Solstice…$9.99/6pk
This copper colored ale is smooth, malty, and lightly sweet, with a
delicate hint of spice. This is a silky, creamy dream, perfect as a
warm weather beer.

Otter Creek’s Vermont Lager arrived last week at the last minute and was
an immediate hit. If the hot weather gets you thirsty for a nicely
balanced refreshing beer that’s not too strong or bitter, this one will
hit the spot. It’s on special with the rest of the Otter Creek beers for
$5.99/6pk.

I'm wondering what other Czech beer besides Budvar (Czechvar) is laying claim to the name Budweiser.

I'm wondering why anyone would want to...

Just stopped in at Norm's yesterday.

Got to go to Norm's this weekend and picked up a twelve pack of Dale's Pale Ale referenced in the "Can Controversy" article:

http://www.realbeer.com/news/articles/news-002641.php

An amazing taste (very hoppy) that I wouldn't have expected out of a can. Norm's also has their Scottish Ale, I look forward to trying that as well.

The Old Chub is a very good beer.

I've never seen it at Norm's although I have gotten it at Whole Foods down the street and as of Saturday that still had both. Last I heard Norm said he couldn't get either from the distributor, or something like that. Maybe call ahead to be sure.

(And Norm, if you're reading this you may want to chime in since it's been months since we talked about this and I'm mot 100% of the details.)

Norm's had both, and quite a number of 12 packs of each variety (as of Saturday, anyway.)

It's official then, I'm blind. OTOH, I was in there buying Russian River beer anyway so I guess I wasn't tuned into my Chubby that afternoon.

I'm not suprised you didn't see it, they had it next to the IC Light.

I can't blame you if you stopped looking for beer after you saw that high-quality product (note sarcasm please).

I know both Whole Foods and Norms carry the cans. Norms has it over on the left side as you walk back to the beer area with the canned IC. I need to get to both places. Anyone notice any degradation of the selection at Vienna WF after Jim moved to Annandale?

Not at all. On Saturday WF had a new Avey 6er, some Russian River, and a host of Belgian ales I hadn't seen before. So far so good.

Happen to notice if they had any Gumballhead?

Yes, Norm had Gumballhead.

I have sampled both and I think they are both very respectable beers. I have been taking the Dales with me to Nats games for tailgating, they take up less room in the cooler than bottles, are a very solid pale ale, and are refreshing for the warm months,

The Chub has a great malty sweetness that makes for a very smooth drinking beer. I think its more a cooler month beer, but thats just me.

I personally hope it starts a trend of good brews in cans. Why not, there are lots of advantages to cans, and with new canning tech, the taste is similar to a bottle.

At least the beer you bring finishes strong...unlike the Nats. (Sorry, couldn't resist - although they are still in fron to the Phils).

My Dales came with a nice plastic bag that you could fill with ice and the beer to take outside (similar to what they do at golf courses). I nice little gimmick to play along with their marketing scheme.

Straub Brewery used to sell their "Greenies" in a plastic bag with a draw string. All you had to do was add ice. But this was not cans, It was bottles, and green ones at that.

The Oktoberfests and Pumpkin beers are starting to show up. This from Norms today:

Beer News

Here they come! Even though the weather (and calendar) remind us that
summer has a long way to go, autumn is in the air! Yeah, we agree it’s
early. But if we don’t get them in now, there won’t be any left for us
in a few weeks! If you’re having a Halloween party and want to have
Pumpkin Ale, our advice is to buy it early…there usually isn’t much left
by the end of October.

Spaten Oktoberfest…$7.99/6pk

Sam Adams Oktoberfest…$7.49/6pk

Due in tomorrow: Hofbrau Oktoberfest!

It’s the Great Pumpkin (Ale) Charlie Brown!
Also due in on Friday: Smuttynose, Buffalo Bill’s, Dogfish Head, and
Post road Pumpkin Ales.
