I was told by someone this weekend that several DC area breweries (including Cap City & the Arlington Rockbottom) were going to sponsor a beer event to be held at the National Zoo next month? I believe for charity.

Does anyone have any details on this rumoured event?

I just received some hard data. Anyone know who the breweries may be?

"Raise your glass to conservation and join FONZ Young
Professionals at the first annual Brew at the Zoo. Local
breweries from Maryland, Virginia, and the District, along with European breweries represented by the Global Brewer's Guild, will be present to share their handcrafted beers. Area restaurants will provide hors d'oeuvres while guests enjoy live music from PaPaSHaKE.

Ticket price includes all beer samples, food,
entertainment, and a commemorative glass. Proceeds from this event will benefit the Zoo's Asian elephant conservation program.

This is a 21-and-over event.

Date: Thursday, August 25
Time: 6-9:30 p.m.
Tickets: Purchased online: members $25, nonmembers $35
Purchased at the door: members $35, nonmembers $45"

I can't help with this tasting other than to tell you that Syr as a Brew at the Zoo tasting every year. It is a great event and a zoo is a wonderful change for beer tasting when compared to the large halls where most are held.

I attended an event at a zoo in milwaukee. I agree, it was a great place to wander around enjoying beer.

Hopefully, this will fit into the agenda next month.

I blogged (http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/going_out_gurus/2005/07/whats_brewing_o.html) about this earlier, but here are the salient details:

The National Zoo's upcoming Brew at the Zoo, a fundraiser that features unlimited samples of beer, food and live music, sounds like a promising place to explore the scene and expand your palette. Nine local breweries and brewpubs are bringing their products on Aug. 25: Capitol City Brewing Company, Sweetwater Tavern, the Arlington branch of Rock Bottom Brewery, Fordham, Founders, Shenandoah Brewing Company, Hops, Baltimore's Clipper City Brewing Company, and the Barley and Hops Grill and Microbrewery.

A baker's dozen of regional, national and international beers completes the lineup, including Young's (London, England), Belhaven (Scotland), Chimay (Belgium), DeKoninck (Belgium), Abita (New Orleans), Rogue (Portland, Oregon), Dogfish Head (Rehoboth, Del.) and He'Brew, the kosher brew from San Francisco.

Food comes from Chipotle, Sequoia, Lebanese Taverna, Cafe Saint-Ex and, oddly, the Zoo Bar, which has never been known for its cuisine.

Tickets are $35 in advance ($25 for members) and include all the beer you wish to sample, food and entertainment from PaPaSHaKE and Jeff Wells. (Wells is a beer connoisseur who works as a regional sales manager for several of the participating breweries.) Proceeds from Brew at the Zoo benefit the Zoo's Asian elephant conservation program.

You might be able to get in the same way I am - by volunteering for a few hours.

This exchange from DCBeer:

Does anyone know how to get advance tickets to the "Brew at the zoo" event
this Thursday evening?

Hit up Jeff at hoppyjeff@hotmail.com ... he's organizing the event,
maybe if you offer a hand he can get you in.

I think they limited tickets to 1000, but don't quote me on that. I may (repeat MAY) have two unused tix come Wed afternoon. If so, I'll post here.

Last night was amazing. So many good beers, ODBF-like atmosphere in a beautiful setting, and the food was like a ton of icing on a huge cake.

It was a ton of fun, couldn't have been a better night weatherwise. I was shocked how many places ran out of food at, like, 7:00. You figured they would have planned a little better. The only place I remember running out of beer early was Founders.

I was surprised that DFH only brought the Raison. I'm not complaining, I like the beer, it just seemed like an odd choice if they were only going to bring one.

There was some confusion at Dogfish - first they brought a key that they weren't supposed to, and then the Aprihops that finally showed up was funky.
