I just got out of college where I was used to drinking cheap beer because that's all I could afford. Now I have a good job and am starting to go out to high end bars with people I work with. The bars have dozens if not hundreds of beers on tap/in bottles. Up to now I've just been letting others order and saying I'll have what he's having. Anyone have some advice as to where to begin without sounding stupid? My favorite "macro brew" is sam adams, right now I'm drinking summer.

1) WELCOME TO THE WORLD OF REAL BEER instead of SWILL!
2) Welcome to the board!

Where are you located? We can probably help point you to some good local micros wherever you are.

Also, besides SAM, what other beers have you liked? Start trying other beers of that style and let your taste buds roam.

Thanks for the welcome BrewDog. I'm from Boston. I'm headed to Sunset this week and from what I hear they have pretty much everything.

I like Heineken, Sam, Regatta Golden. I've been drinking new beers but haven't done a good job at keeping track of what's what.

1st, go hit RedBones and start sampling.
I LOVED that place when I used to live in Boston.

There are TONS of great brews in New England.
Check out the "Beer in the NorthEast" section here on RB instead of me typing them all in.

Also, check out www.BeerAdvocate.com for great tasting notes. Read what others say about the beers and you will start to find yourself looking for those flavors yourself (and finding them).

Again, Welcome!

If you like lagers, here's a german one I've been getting into quite a lot lately: Paulaner Original Munich. Either bottle OR can (yes, I know, you're dubious; so was I - canned beer doesn't have to be crap; if you pour it into a glass, there's no tinny taste). When you get a taste of this, you'll realize what Heineken wants to be when it grows up. Welcome to the board!
