Hello all,
I am heading to Philly this weekend for the Nat's game.
What are the can't miss beer places?
Eulogy and Monk's are both very good, so I hear.
Any thoughts would be appreciated!

The Standard Tap should be thrown in there. Outstanding beer bar. Khyber Pass is pretty good if you get there early (before the bands).

If you are looking for a brew pub, I enjoyed Independence Brewpub when I was up last. It has good food as well as a pretty good inhouse selection (at least it did when I was there). Also, it is right next to the Marriot? I think and Reading Market. Go Nat's!

The previous issue of Mid Atlantic Brew News was all about Philly brewers and beer bars. If you still have a copy or can locate one it should be very helpful. I think the current issue does the same thing for Baltimore.
Let us know how it goes.
GO NATS!!

If you are in Philly, there are a couple of places that are required visits. In downtown area you must check out Monk's Cafe...! A great place (12th and Spruce I believe) with an tremendous selection of Belgian brews and great food. If you are eating there let the high end items go by ie. Salmon, seafood, steaks and opt for the burgers! No kidding,, they're awesome... and this is not a "bar food place" but they are from heaven. Also, within a short walk are Nodding Head Brewer and Independence Brewery. Both very good. Also, ask for directions to Sugar Momas (2nd street area) Great firkin friday if you are there then. If you can make your way out of downtown, check out Mannyunk Brewery (incorrect spelling) in the trending cool area just outside of the city... and if you are in the burbs there are a few very good breweries... Valley Forge Brewery just outside King of Prussia, Sly Fox Brewery in Pheonixville, pa and General Laffeyette Inn Brewery in Laffayette Hill are some suggestions. Having managed breweries all over the country, I still believe Philly to be among the strongest and best in the nation. HAVE FUN!!!!

I would say Monk's is a must. Go to the back bar, where the tap selection is nearly triple what is up front.
And in the neighborhood of Monk's is Nodding Head, a brewpub. Good food, cool place.

Sly Fox in Pheonixville is very good. (Victory is not too far from here in Downingtown) I was less than impressed with General Lafayette Inn.

Working downtown until 10PM - Midnight hours, we would almost exclusively go to the South Street area. This got old because you could only find Yuengling Lager or maybe a seasonal Flying Fish on tap. Now we go to the up and coming Northern Liberties area that is stiuated just north of downtown not far from the intersection of Columbus Blvd and Spring Garden St. There you will find the Standard Tap (which only serves area microbrews like Troges, Victory, Flying Fish, etc.), North Third (which has an impressive bottle collection and the best wings in Northern Liberties), and my personal favorite, the Druid's Keep (this is a corner row home converted into a bar with a good bottle collection, almost always something by Magic Hat on tap, a pool table and dart board, and an outdoor area in which you can sit and take in the sounds of I-95). There is also the 700 Club and the Abbye all situated within a few block radius. It's a great place to go bar hopping and you won't find Bud in any of those bars. BTW - Go Phils :D

I am really lookig forward to it, Philly has a reputation for being a good beer town, and since the Sat. game is in the afternoon, it will allow lots of bar time in the evening.
Has anyone been in the ball park? Any word on the beer in the park?
It seems that Monks is the place not to miss, and it's nice there are some other places in staggering distance from Monks.

Monks is great but I would call Standard Tap its equal. Monks leans a bit more towards imports and ST is more local/domestic.

Monk's is also very pricey. You can drop on average $5 to $6 a beer on Belgan and English imports, whereas Standard Tap averages $4 a pint of local micros. Plus if you are driving, it's easier to park over by ST then by Monk's which is in the heart of downtown. As for the ball park, Yuengling and I think Red Hook is the best you'll find there.

Just got back from philly, and though the Nats lost both games we saw, we still had a great time.
The beer in the ball park is great! On par with Camden yards. I did not walk around the whole park, but in my area there was on tap:
victory hop devil (I had many of these!)
anchor steam
flying fish pale ale
dock street pils
sierra nevada pale ale
I also visted Monks, which was great, and had time for a quick beer at Nodding Head (I had a beer called Monkey Knife Fight, a light lager beer. Something with a name like that I had to try. It would be a good beach beer, light and a little sweet.)
The fans were all pretty nice, and though we got some away team ribbing, most people were proud to show off their new park, which is a palace compared to RFK.
