I asked this on another thread but, Do you have a recommendation for brands and perhaps a place that will mail order decent brats? I can already get good cheeses from a place near green Bay called ....wait for it........ Steve's Cheeses!.

On Steve's Cheese Rd. in Denmark - Hinterland brewing used to be right down the same road! ;)
I really don't have any recommendations mail order Chaz, maybe there are some links (hah) on that web site I posted. When I'm just running through the grocery store, I tend toward Johnsonville brand, but there are too many home-made places close to me too.

I once went to Hinterland. I'll bet I have some pictures. And have toured Steves as well. My neice and family from Green Bay were recently down here visiting. I shoulda had them bring some groceries.

Tofurky makes a "brat" that is made with Full Sail Pale Ale that's pretty good! I keep drying them out, though...

Sheboygans are supposed to be the be-all end-all brats. Haven't had one in a while, but Sheboygan also has the biggest Brat-fest in the world too.

Here is an easy solution to avoid dried out sausages when grilling for parties. Take a can of beer, not too cheap, not to expensive, but something light, and pour it into an aluminum cake pan. Slice up and add an onion and maybe a pinch or two of your favorite spices. Put this pan on the top shelf of your grill where it will remain simmering for the duration. Cook as many brats as you want and then put them in the pan of simmering beer. Your guests can go back for more brats all day long and you never have to cook more than once. Plus, they remain warm and juicy all day long.

Thanks for the suggestion; I think I'll have to modify it a bit though - we have a hibachi. ;)

Chaz check out http://www.german-gourmet.com/ locally. I get all my wursts from there. Excellent & authentic.

Actually I have been there several times. Great meats. I forgot about them. They have wonderful liverwurst. And now I'm hungry for some!

That's right down the street from me and I have been there many times. Their spaetzle salad is some of the best I have had. The potato salad is the best, period. Go in there at lunchtime one day and you can get a go box for 6 bucks that has a brat on a roll with kraut and mustard, red cabbage and potato salad. Yum.

Good to know. Do they make liverwurst sandwiches to go?
I've been there on Saturday mornings and parking and the line can get long. I wish they had a broader beer selection as well.
There is a Russian gourmet shop out in Herndon that I sometimes get too. (It is a few doors up from Hard Times.)

Yes, my homebrew club meets at Hard Times. Unfortunately, every time I get up there the Russian store is closing. What's it like?
Usinger's brats, made up in Milwaukee. Lot's of different flavors and plenty of other sausages as well. Woodmans in Kenosha has a great selection.

Agreed, Usinger's are my favorite "macro" brat...I find Johnsonville to be WAY overhyped, unless you like chunks of fat and grizzle in your brat.
A little further North, there is a meat market in Brownsville that makes outstanding sausages.

Sorry but not brat but sausage related post.
Here in the Syr area, the best Italian Sausage is made by two Jewish Guys. They combined their names for the business and call it Gianelli. Sounds Italian and I do think they make a decent brat too.

There seems to something just odd about two Jewish guys making bratwurst...

Never been a big fan of Usinger's (though they're sponsoring the home-brew contest I'm judging and buying me lunch...), something about the casing being way too tough for human consumption - of course, maybe they were cooked badly where I'd gotten them last. They're perfect for Münchner Früstuck (Munich Breakfast) where it's traditional to peel your Weißwurst! ;)
But Osh, you should check out the Supervalu sausages - it's not right off the freeway, but it's a great store to seek out. Bet their beer is fresher than Woodman's too...
Harp, I've bought the fresh Johnsonvilles before and they've been less fatty, but what's a brat if not fatty? :-O

Now you don't know that, maybe they are?
Just because they make 'em doesn't mean they eat 'em. But maybe their brats are all veal?

I get over that way about once a month. (I live in Centreville / Chantilly area) It has lots of Russian and eastern European goods. Mostly foodstuffs and canned goods. Some meats, bakery items and prepared foods and several different Russian and eastern European beers. Worth checking out. Sometimes they will give you a sample of some of the prepared foods. There are also several Indian grocery stores in that area. I love indian food.

Chaz -- I don't know if this has come up, but Wagshall's Market in DC, on Mass Ave right near the MD/Bethesda border, has nice sausages including the brats that I've served at my annual patio Octoberfest. They specialize in nice flesh like prime beef and giant lobsters. -Jeff

I have to correct myslef. The two Jewish guys do not make a brat. They just do Italian sausage, breakfast sausage, and spedies.
I am sorry for the misinformation, forgive me as i must have been sober.

Probably condidered kabob's everywhere else. A local favorite in the Binghamton NY area originally. Basically you take marinated meat, pork or venison is the best, put it on a skewar and grill it then serve on a slice of Roma's Italian bread. You don't put veggies on like a traditional kabob.
Binghamton has a spedie fest every year in July I think. My mom occasionally send the winning marinaide receipies. I think I will now be making some this weekend.:D
I want a Lupo's spedie sub now!

I used to live on kabob sandwiches at my first job out of college. The local pizza joint made one with a Greek twist. Damn tasty!
Cheers!

Calm down, calm down. I bought some Johnsonville Brats last night. Easy to make at the beach.
I like good brats and sausages.
Johnsonville are passable.
I NEVER eat hot dogs though. (But if I did it, it would only have mustard and chopped onions.)

As far as hot dogs go, Hebrew National does a really good job. Miss 'em.

Vienna Dogs are popular around Chicago - you might try a Chi-style dog Chaz; mustard, relish, onions, celery salt, tomato wedge, dill pickle wedge - small hot peppers on request. Ee-yum.
But straight mustard is good too - Oscar Mayers at Wrigley back in the old days, yummer.
