i have this weird stuff floating on top of my beer, even after racking...kind of looks like floating yeast. sort of a grayish sledge floating on my beer. i used wyeast 1056 american ale yeast, which has a low-medium floculation.

it's kind of bothering me...probably pour some finings in after it's done fermenting and all.

it does smell like beer...i did not taste it, but it definitely smells like a nice, hoppy ale.

maybe i should point out that it's been getting warmer and warmer here (but since humidity is less than 20% i haven't been running the a/c) and the beer fermented at a temperature higher than normal.

i had one other beer that did this in primary, but it settled out and was just fine...this time, even after 1.5 weeks in primary and racking i still have this stuff floating in my beer.

I think you responded to one of my recent posts about why my beers have a "yeasty" flavor. FYI...I'm pretty sure at this point my problem was that I wasn't letting the bottles sit long enough before drinking. I think I was drinking much more active yeast than I should.

Anyway, I don't have an answer to your situation. I can just empathize. I saw the same thing in a batch of Red Cedar Ale. Sorry, I don't have any data for that batch, except that it was more than likely on the warm side of things when fermenting. I saw what looked like almost very small pieces of cork (though I'm sure it was yeast clumps) not only floating on top, but ascending and descending slowly in my glass carboy. Most of the activity subsided after a while though.

I had the same thing happen to me and when i racked i grabbed a cpl pieces in a jar and tasted it---it was my hops---i have no idea why they did not sink to the bottom---maybe because it was too hot----but i have no idea--i just racked a third time and they are almost out now.

thanks, guys. yeah, i scooped some out today...it's hops...it's hot...that must be the thing. dry hopping and racking diminished it a lot so i'm not worried...well, except that it's my first beer below 7% abv :(

I bet pelletized hops can ride the CO2 to top of your brew just like yeast.
