hello all...

I am bottling today and things have gone a bit crazy. I was soaking the bottles in a no-rinse oxi cleaner/sanitizer when my wife says that we have to leave to meet her parents for lunch! Great timing....(typical of the in-laws). So, I thought that I would just leave the bottles soak and finish when I got back.

I just got back and the bottles that have been soaking for about 3 hours are very strange. The surface is very rough and after they have dried they have a white film on them that only comes of when scrubbed quite hard.

My question is: What happened to these bottles? I thought the cleaner was light duty and that nothing weird would happen.

My other question is: Can I still use thes bottles safely for the beer or not? It's got me a bit nervous but I don't know.

Any advice or anectodotes would be great!!

P.S. I have already run to the basement to tap into the extra stash of bottlesworried that these 11 aren't any good.

you've discovered the reason most people switch to stuff like PBW for cleaning and Star San for sanitizing, that nasty filmy residue that oxidizing cleaners/sanitizers leave behind... you can rewash them and resanitize them, but in the long run I'd seriously recommend switching to the above mentioned chemicals eventually...

That's exactly what happened to the corny keg that I left half full of oxy-clean solution. I still have not tried the suggestion of PBW soaking to fix it.

What is PBW?

Powdered Brewery Wash, available at your LHBS. It is relatively expensive so I only use it where I think it is absolutely needed.
