This might seem a little trivial but when I take my gravity reading while transfering wort into fermenter, when trying to find my efficiency on pro-mash do I use ;measurement taken in kettle or fermenter? The efficiency varies by about 20% between these two options.

Good question. I have a similar problem.
Kettle dead space in my brew pot causes me to lose a LOT of wort (1.5 gals) if I want to be anal about keeping trub out of the primary. If I go by the 7 gal post boil amount (which is how much wort I need to be able to leave the majority of the trub behind), promash says my eff is around 75%. If I go by the 5.5 gal amount that actually makes it into my primary, I get total crap for efficiency numbers.
How do you guys deal with this?
Use the gravity reading of the total after boil kettle volume before you transfer into the fermenter.

This is the main reason I use the "measurmnt taken into kettle" method. Collect all of runnings into the kettle and take a gravity reading. Plug the exact amount of pre-boil wort at this time. Promash even says this is the most accurate method for an efficiency calculation. If you use the measurment "taken in fermenter" method you have to plug the exact amount of wort that goes into the fermenter. All of the losses should be figured in the water needed page of your brew session. Once you fill out the water needed page correctly them proceed to the efficiency calculater and plug your exact amount of wort that you collected in your fermenter. All of the deductions will be taken into consideration by promashes water needed page at this point. I use to battle this all the time. It will drive you nuts. I hope this is clear enough of an answer.
