In preparation for a trip I'm trying to get info on Italian craft beer. In other words NOT peroni.
Please add any recomendations. Help keep me off the Grappa. Thanks.

So far I have received these recommendations:

Baladin (Piozzo)

Starbess (Rome)

Panil
http://www.panilbeer.com/

Panil Barriquée must be tried!

Ghisa, the fisrt Italian smoked beer brewed by Birrificio Lambrate in Milano, was just sent to US where it will be imported by B.United

Theakston, a few weeks back there were some discussions on DC-beer about beer / breweries in Italy. you might revive the subject there. It has been a long time since I was last in Italy but Nastro Azzuro and Forst beers were really all we found. Good Luck!

Wow that first post was a while back. I enjoyed a visit to Baladin in Piozzo and was able to get some Panil - you can now get both of these at our local Wholfeoods!
Well as it happens we are going back to Italy this year - to Rome and to the Cilento region south of Naples. I just found out that by pure coincidence the hotel I booked in Rome is a block from these 2 places:
Ma Che Siete Venuti A Fa', also known as "The Football Pub",and Bir & Fud
read stonch's review here (http://stonch.blogspot.com/2007/10/birra-in-roma-quanno-moro-vo-jo-esse.html)
Any other suggestions for Rome or Cilento?

There are a couple of breweries in the Bolzano area...

Hopfen in Bolzano
http://www.boznerbier.it/

Forst in Merano
http://www.forst.it/en.html

There are two others in the area but these are the two we went to...

If you go to Bolzano, you can also see Ötzi, the thousands year-old ice body that was found in the Austrian Alps. It was pretty cool.

At a side note, they speak German in the region.
