View Full Version : cleaning and sanitizing counter flow wort chiller

How do you clean and sanitize your counter flow wort chillers?

I don't use a pump yet, and this will be my first all-grain experience. (2nd ever brew).

I'm thinking what I will do is

(1) set up my 10 gallon HLT and mashtun igloos with the HLT above the mashtun and then attach the counter flow wort chiller below the mashtun

(2) Put water and PBW cleaner in the HLT for appropriate amount of time

(3) let the water and PBW cleaner drain from the HLT into the mashtun for X amout of time

(4) let the water and PBW cleaner drain from the mashtun through the counter flow wort chiller

(5) Put water and BTF Idophor in the mashtun and let it drain through the counter flow wort chiller

What do you think? I'm such a novice I could be completely wrong here.

your process seems ok, I'd add one more thing, after chilling your wort, get cleaner and sanitizer in there as soon as possible. I run boiling water through mine as soon as it's finished, to make sure none of the sugars crystallize and provide a point for infections to lodge...

haha.. no not rich.. but i would have bought a pump already if i had understood the process better. Since I'm so new to all-grain, I'm going to do a couple of 5 gal. batches with what I have, and then probably get the pump before I do my first 10 gal. batch. I will need a bigger brew pot for that too.

I built a CFC and used it when I was doing extract, and gravity fed it from a turkey fryer. (I got kicked out of the house while brewing about 10 minutes after my first batch...) my cleaning method was similar, chill the wort, rinse out the kettle, boil up 3 gallons of water, run it through the CFC, then a couple of gallons of sanitizer. (which I had already mixed up, used for the CFC in the first place, then for the carboy, etc...)
