Happy hour. Richard English might chime in on this, but from what I hear there's a move to ban happy hour to curb binge drinking.

ahhh, well it's been like 10 minutes and they still haven't done the segment. go figure. And I have to leave my house in a few minutes so if I miss it i'm gonna be kinda pissed.

Happy hours and minimum drink prices have been in the British press a lot lately but that doens't seem to be a big deal. I can only think it might be something about a proposed smoking ban, but that's far from a done deal.

oh ok, thanks, I had to leave the house before the news was over so I missed it. I hate when they advertise for something just before a commercial then don't show the story for another half hour.

Yeah, like when they tell you " you need to know this or you will die " and then wait for 45 minutes. Gotta love the " news ". Happy hour eh? Oh well, guess people will just have to drink excessively during " regular " hours.

The state of MN is considering legislation that would eliminate the so called "Power Hour", that is, the hour (or two) after midnight, but before bar close when people who have just turned of legal drinking age "power" drink. I've heard of doing 21 shots in an hour and other types of excessive drinking. Their solution is to prohibit someone from buying/consuming alcohol until 8 a.m. on the day of their 21st birthday. Seems to me this is a bit short sighted and that bars, especially those on/near college campuses will just open at 8 a.m. and you'll end up having 21 year olds who spend the entire day drinking instead. Yet another attempt to change the social issues of alcohol through legislation.

They stopped allowing happy hour discounts in VA a long time ago. Many of the bars were having 2 for 1 prices. When it was dis allowed most bars began offering free finger foods to attract the crowds.

Wow, it's a good thing the gov't is watching out for my best interest. Since I don't read history like our fearless leaders I might think we're going towards a prohibition type thing. Wonder how that would turn out. This from people who are led by a recovering alchie(?).

A bar here in Syr, used to run a special drink night based on when the first tolilet got flished. I forget but I think drinks where 1/2 price until someone flushed. Needless to say I never set foot inside that place.

I doubt our fearless leaders read anything but their latest ratings.:(

That would never work for anyone who has ever had a kidney stone removed and a stint placed inside. They would be in the bathroom every 5 minutes trying to go.:( I can say this from experience.

I have foggy reccolections of those from college days - drink til you pee. The goal was not to be the first into the bathroom - you had to leave if it was you.

A couple bars in my college days had "Mug Night" every Wednesday night. They'd fill any mug you bring in for a buck. As you can imagine, people starting getting pretty creative with the mugs that got brought in. The bars finally drew the line when a couple guys started bringing those giant plastic mugs that were used to sell Beer Nuts. They used to have them in gas stations or sometimes behind the bar in some places. They probably held a couple gallons of beer. I think the bars said they'd only fill those half full....never made to many of my Thursday morning classes....

I remember mug nights from college. You could not use just any mug you had to buy theirs which wasn't to bad and you got cheap refills. I still have mine around after 20 some years though I think it may be broken. Oh yea this was the bar ON campus, doubt that would fly in todays day and age.

Do most universities have on campus pubs these days? UC Irvine had one until this year, but they are redoing the student center and when all is finished the pub will not be back.

We had them when I was in school. In addition they had an annual weekend party where folks would camp out in the parking lots. Lots of kegs and bands. Drinking age was 18 then.

A lot of schools use to have them but they are dissapearing from campuses or are a figment of there former selves. Of course this may be good in some ways in that they are places to go and talk vs how much can I drink for a buck type of places.

I actually never really stepped in there during business hours. It was in the commons ,yes?? I once "found" myself inside at night and enjoyed some beer and wine. Unfortunately one of the guys I shared with was a frat boy and they destroyed my newly found oasis. The school quickly put locks on all the fridge doors. I must admit that all the stores and the Steelhead brewery were just an imagination when I went there. I may check out the new construction. Zot.

The Pub was in the student center, upstairs from the food court.
What years were u there?

I was there from, uh oh I'm dating myself, 81 to 84. I remember a commons ( food court?? ) on the inside of the circle, and another building, next to admin, on the outside. I really never went drinking on campus even though I lived in Middle Earth for a year. As I told you, I only snuck into the commons during spring break and got a case of beer. Thinking it would be my personal stash for months to come but the frat boys............ anyway. The whole mall thing across the street was a dirt lot.

ha! I can't imagine what it must've looked like 20 years ago. Even in the last 4 years when I was there they put up a ton of new bulidings. I wonder what commons you are talking about... the only one I know is the mesa court commons.... I lived in mesa court and that was the main food hall.... but it's a little ways off of the ring, situated right in mesa court.... Inside the ring, there's a place called Gateway commons I think right across from the Main Library which is like a study hall.
Anyway, Irvine was an interesting experience.

That's it!! Gateway commons. Exactly! Across the library.. I've forgotten a little since I've been there last. I know they've built a whole lotta new buildings. The price of success. As for Irvine, the city, I enjoyed Newport a lot more.
