you forget to purge air from the head space in a keg with CO2 before you seal it and apply pressure? Oxidation?

IMO, no. I hardly ever purge.
its not very much volume, maybe a quart or so... only 21% of which is O2, even less if you're willing to assume that some co2 is released when you transfer.

Oxidation is possible. While some peoply might say they never have that problem and they never purge why tempt fate? A quick purge at a minimum is always a good thing, longer though is better.

How do you purge it? Hold open the pressure release valve open for a couple of seconds after you hook up the co2 tank?

I usually do that about 3 or 4 times in a row.
