I dont have a hydrometer yet. I have a batch of light beer going(5gal). The lock is no longer going. I used dry yeast , 6lbs extract and 1 lb grain. Racked after 5 days airlock stopped showing action and has been in the secondary for 3 days now. Do you think its ready yet?

Give it another 7-10 days. A 2 week secondary works WONDERS on a beer. Your patience will be rewarded, trust me.

If I did it tonight would i have grenades? It didnt have much sugar for the yeast to feed on so thats why I thought it might be done. I am worried that if I wait too long it will be flat after priming. Grenades if I bottle or not?

I've had beers in secondary for a a couple months and they carbonated just fine.

You'll probably NOT have grenades, but you will have young, 'green' beer. Give it time to mellow. I know that this is a hard thing to do, but it is worth it.

If you can't keep your hands off it, brew more batches to the point that you have a full pipeline. Then, you'll not be left dry waiting for a batch to be ready.

Thank you for the advice.lol I couldnt wait but dont fret. I have a x-mas experiment and some barleywine fermenting as we speak. Tomorrow i am cooking up a brown type concoction.

6# Dark malt extract
2 oz chocalate
8 oz crystal 60 L
2 oz belgium aromatic
2 oz oats
8 oz malto dextrine
1 oz northern brewer
2 oz cascade

Sound any good? be honest.

Hmmm, I'm wondering how the belgian Aromatic and the oats are getting converted... If you really want these in the recipie, Perhaps you could add some base grain and do a partial mash. Otherwise, I wouldn't put them in the steep since they will just add unconverted starches, which is never a good thing.

those are such small amounts that they will just contribute to color and body. I wouldnt worry about mashing them.
