View Full Version : Foolish Question about oatmeal stouts...

Can someone explain to me what they taste like? I've never tried one as the word "oatmeal" sends me into convulsion of disgust. I'm sure they don't taste like the Quaker stuff my mom force fed me as a child, but still...
Could someone set me straight?

it has been a while sense the last time i've had one but.......
i don't remember it being too far off from a regular stout , a little bit lighter i think, youngs i think it was. also i tried an oatmeal stout at a brewery in brea that i remember being very good. i know you asked more for a disciption of the taste , but i can't really recall specifics.

Smoother, creamier, and sweeter than say a dry stout such as Guinness. With no loss of the robust roasty maltiness typical of a stout. No, don't think Quaker Oats, but it *is* the same grain.
If you've tried and like Young's Double Chocolate Stout, you'll like their (and other's) Oatmeal Stout.
Now, let's talk Oyster Stouts...

OYSTER STOUTS!?!?!?!?!!??
ARE YOU SURE YOUR ANTENNAS PICKING UP ALL THE CORRECT CHANNELS? YOU MEAN EATING RAW OYSTERS AND AND DRINKING A STOUT RIGHT?:D I'VE HEARD OF THEM BUT NEVER ACTUALLY SEEN ONE. WHAT DO THEY DO? THROW OYSTERS IN TO THE BOIL?
THAT DOESN'T SOUND VERY ENTICING. SEA FOOD AND BEER , OKAY . BUT SEAFOOD IN BEER???..........ANY GOOD?
AND WHATS WITH THE SAN FRANCISCO BREWING CO. THINGY IN THE SUBJECT BOX??? I DIDN'T PUT THAT THERE!

To me the Oatmeal Stout extraordinaire is Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout...and you can smell and catch some of the taste of the oatmeal. Highly recommend - try it you'll like.

There you have it - a full treatise on Oyster Stout. However, I see that MJ's article was written in 1988 - since then I've had the opportunity to visit the Porter House, brew-pub and beer bar in Dublin, Ireland. They brew an Oyster Stout and, of course, I had to try it!

It was definitely a stout, with the slightest astringency in the aftertaste. I only had one, so I can't comment on whether or not it was typical for their brew.

Thanks. I definitely liked the Young's Double Chocolate, so I'll go with their Oatmeal. If that goes over well, then I'll brave the Samuel Smiths (at 11.99 a four pack, I'm not taking any chances I won't like it.)
