I am off to Sorrento on Friday for a few days; does anyone happen to know whether there's any drinkable beer there?

try birra moretti if you're searchin' for a genuine blondie,or the super-typical-enough good Menabrea

Thank you, carloschiavi. I was there last week and am now back.

I was given some Nazzo Azzuro which was staggeringly mediocre. I tried another glass just to be sure and that was no better. I didn't try either of the others you mentioned as I gave up and repaired to Chaplin's bar where they served a fine pint of draught Guinness. Not my usual choice but light years ahead of "nasty and sorry".

Thank you, Arthur. I salute your memory.

Most of the Italian beers I have tried over the years have been less than stellar. Namely Nastro Azzuro, Forst, Peroni, and Moretti. I may occasionally try one in an Italian restaurant but usually it's wine.

Yeah... Italy and beer... France and the military... some things just don't go together well. ;)

Next time you're in Italia - stick with the wine!

Although there is no love lost between the British and the French, I feel it's unfair to criticise them for their military endevours which, with few exceptions, have been very worthy. They are not a cowardly nation.

Don't forget, too, that one of the most famous mercenary fighting forces of all time was - the French Foreign Legion.

And they do make a few good beers as well (though not so many as do we or the Belgians).

I agree Richard. Without the French, We would possibly have lost our own revolution. Not that their participation was not self serving. And of course they did have Napoleon. I have always enjoyed my visits to France and have always found some suitable beers. Italy was more difficult beerwise.
