Deschutes, Portland brewing, and Bridgeport all stand out to me right off the top... :)

Deschutes is a long way from Portland - definitely pick up some of their beer, but a visit to the brewery isn't a hop, skip, jump from Portland to Bend, OR.

Here's one beer tour available to look at:

http://www.beeradvocate.com/beerfly/city/16/

Keep in mind this is Portland proper and there are other places outside the city worth the short drive to. You can search BeerFly via zip code, area code, etc. for more...

Enjoy!

I was recently at a tasting that Fred Bowman of Portland Brewing was one of the featured speakers. I'd love to check out the pub.

It has been a few years so I don't remember names but there are a ton of good beer bars in downtown Portland. There are within easy walk or drive distance of one another.

McMenamins, any will work but I exceptionally enjoyed the Crystal Ballroom and Edge Field. Edge Field has a winery and distillery as well or they did when I was there a few years back.

Widmer's is a decent stop and if you can get on the tour for the production plant the you should. They have a sweet 250bbl facility across the street from the pub which I believe is running a 30bbl brewhouse.

You could spend days in Portland and not drink the same beer twice. Here's a couple of suggestions -

Brewpubs
Full Sail Brewing at the Riverplace
New Old Lompoc
Widmer
Bridgeport

Beer bars / Alehouses
Horsebrass Pub
Rose and Raindrop pub
Rogue Ales Public House
Henry's 12th Street Tavern

These are all excellent places where one could sit for hours and hours. Deschutes makes some great beers, and would be a nice side trip if you have an extra day. Bend is about 3 hours drive time from PDX, but their beers are served all over the state.

When in Portland you have to go to Laurelwood, www.laurelwoodbrewpub.com. Some of the best beer around and always brewing new seasonals. Widmer and Portland Brewing are good places to go. I'd also recommend the Lucky Lab, Alameda brewpub and Bj's at Lloyd Center or Jantzen Beach.

Also, of course, make the trips to the Horsebrass, Rose and Raindrop, and Henry's.. the new restuarant/bar on the grounds of the old Henry Weinhards site. They have 100 beers on tap and an excellent happy hour menu.

If you can make it out to the coast, 2hrs. out of Portland, come see us at the Pelican Pub, www.pelicanbrewery.com and go to Rogue in Newport, www.rogue.com.

You can find all the Oregon Beer info at www.oregonbeer.org.

I'll second some of the already mentioned places.
First things first.
Bridgeport is closed for a massive makeover. However a small Bridgeport Pub is open on SE Hawthorne.

Definately hit the Horse Brass, The Rose & Raindrop and The Moon & Sixpence.
As for brew pubs, must do's are, Laurelwood (the one in Hollywood 40th Ave, I think), Widmer , Rogue Public House, Lucky Lab and Alameda.

Henry's has the personality of Applebee's with 100 beers, but their mainly beers you don't want or have had a 1000 times.
McMenamin's beer is mediocre at best, but some of the locations are worth the average beer.

If you make it into the Columbia River Gorge visit Full Sail. They only have a tasting room, but I've heard they have more food now. You never know what you might find on tap there.

Just across the "Bridge of the Gods", in Stevenson, WA, is a great little brewery, Walking Man. It's only open after 3 or 4pm, Wed-Sun, but they have 10 inhouse brewed, quality beers.

If you go to the Coast, visit Pelican Pub. It's in Pacific City.

Use this link for an extensive list of locations in Portland. There are reviews, links to maps, phone numbers and a link to info on all their beers.

This is a link to a similar page, this one with various cities in Oregon.

Have fun!!

Sad to hear that is what is going on. When Portland hosted the CBC we had some pretty good beer from them at the Crystal Ballroom while listening to the Rolling Boil Blues Band.

Not saying their beer is bad, just when compared to a lot of other offerings in town, they pale in comparison.

Thanks for the tips! Looking forward to a relaxing trip of hiking Mt Hood, biking the Columbia river gorge, and hitting a swill or three at many establishments, all the while, working a wedding into our 6 day trip. Cheers...........

I lived in Portland a couple years ago and the Rogue Ales Public House (13th and Flanders) was my spot. I think they make the best beers in the country and they've got like 25 of their own beers on tap and a few guest taps.

Also go to the Horse Brass on Belmont. Real cool english style pub owned by Don Younger of Rogue Younger's Special Bitter fame. They've got 30-40 taps with lots of great NW beers. Rogue Brutal Bitter, one of my favorite beers, was originally brewed for the Horse Brass also.

Those are the 2 places that I MUST go whenever I'm in Portland. There are LOTS of other cool places to go for good beer as you can see from the other posts. Rose and Raindrop always had Chimay on tap. I gotta agree with batkins, McMennamins beer is mediocre at best. For package beer, go to Whole Foods 2 blocks from the Rogue, great selection of beer and great cheese to go with. Or stop by John's Multnomah Deli if you're out on the west side.

Man I miss Portland....

NOTE: Bridgeport brewery will be under renovation/remodeling at the time that the original poster will be in Portland. They are changing their restaurant and their menu to a more "upscale" (read: not for beer drinkers) look/taste. I don't know when they will be done, but it won't be until after July, for sure.

(heard straight from the horse's mouth, Karl Ockert, BP brewmaster).

Welcome to the board. Who says beer drinkers are not upscale? ;)

Well, you know the old stereotype: wine is for the fancy folk, and beer is for the fried-foods and pizza crowd. =) Not that I subscribe to said stereotype, of course.

And thanks for the welcome.

True about the stereotype, but it's also true (as newportstorm has pointed out on occasion) that wine used to be where beer is now, and has been able to overcome that "wino" stigma. We've got work to do, boys! :)

Here is a novel idea: Make a small buget movie about some folks going on a beer tour! LOL!;)

I'd also recommend the Lucky Lab

Ditto. My XGF and I logged in about 1k miles in a rental car over 6 days in OR several years ago. There are large parts of the trip I don't remember -- but I thank god I can read drunk-scribble from my notes! -- but one thing is for sure. The Lab is the only place I went to twice. Great, cheap food and great, cheap beer.

Hmm, need to visit some of the places you guys mention. I've heard of many, but not all.

he Acropolis?

yes, and the entertainment. Man, Haven't been there for years. The food was good and cheap back then, and glad to hear it is now.

Anybody been to Rockbottom downtown yet? I hear good things.

Just getting into brewing myself.

If nothing else the Rock Bottom downtown is convenient. Their standard line up of beers leaves a lot to be desired, but their seasonal and special brews can be quite good. Their cask ales are always pretty fair as well. Check the place out during the Oregon Brewers Festival, they usually have several very good specialties. But we are talking about PDX here, there's much better beer to be had in the area.

Wolf, when do you move north? Is that still happening? Slight chance I may be in LV in Late August. I loved the HB haus.

Hey Chaz,

Spetember 30 is my "official" last day at work here in Vegas, and I've got a few odds and ends to clean up after that, but then WATCH OUT OREGON here I come. I should be around in late August, assuming something doesn't go terribly awry at work and I end up quitting or something. We'll see how things are in August...

I'm a little suprised nobody has mentioned the Dublin Pub

http://dublinpub.citysearch.com/?cslink=profile_info_website_cust

Although not right in the heart of downtown, it is only a short bus ride away.

Of course I may be biased, I lived within walking distance from it for 2 years :D

Here is a novel idea: Make a small buget movie about some folks going on a beer tour! LOL!Someone beat you to it Chaz. If you haven't seen/heard about the American Beer documentary then you gotta check this out www.sixhundred.com. Four guys go to 38 breweries in 40 days. It's a GREAT film, very entertaining. I'm sure everyone on this forum would enjoy. I got the DVD on amazon for $12 but I'm going to buy the special edition from the sixhundred website. It's got 80 min. of deleted scenes among other special features.
