Some say this is just another reason to drink. I say, those Bavarian Catholics don't surprise me, I expected nothing less from them!

My favorite line is, "Newspapers, in eye-popping 4-inch type, claimed Benedict XVI as a son of Bavaria, a man of Munich." A distinction I hope is bestowed on me some day!

Although, I think Ms. Spolar should brush up on her beer knowledge by visiting us once in a while, the closest thing to an ale brewed by this obviously Bavarian brewery is their Weizen.

Same here! I was discussing the fact the he was from Bavaria and he probably enjoys beer. Gasps from those in the room! "The Pope does not drink!?"

That was a big laugh for me.

Apparently many people have the misconception that religous people have disdain for alcohol. Only the crazies do that.

This article (http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,15055605%255E28737,00.html) indicates Cardinal Ratzinger did drink beer, but may have had to give it up for health reasons:
The German cardinal suffered a stroke in 1991 and was recently ordered to give up drinking beer, his brother said.
But maybe he can still make time for one or two. Even Popes need a break!

I've been a catholic since birth. if there's one thing common throughout the church, it's alcohol. My grandmother is baptist and never drinks, but her husband is catholic and he puts away plenty of jack daniels. He also told me he used to brew beer a long time ago. I'm guessing it was illegal then, but never really got to ask him about it.

Of course he drank beer. I would not be able to trust a pope if he had not.;)
