175 lbs of extra light malt extra for $200? the guy will let me use a tapper that will let me fill half gallon jugs (approx 6 pounds worth). Thats about 20-30 of batches of beer! I suspose, shelf life will be an issue, but if I fill the jugs full so that there is no O2 in there then the extract shoudl keep. STorage will be in the basement (wisconsin climate, basement varies from 55-65 F).
Obviously I use extract and DONT foresee going to all grain anytime soon.
AM I NUTS? My price per case of beer will get down to about $10 (assuming I don't lose product).

Seems like a good deal. I'm always leary of something that seems too good to be true. I'd say if you trust the guy and you know the DME is in good shape then go for it.

My main fear would be stored product pests such as indian meal moths etc... Some of them have an uncanny ability to get into containers that are seemingly impervious to air. I have no idea if they would be interested in DME but I've had them get into some weird stuff including an extremely hot dried spice extract. (unrelated to brewing). Good luck with it.

I would agree with Payson. If you know, and trust, the individual go for it. Twenty to thirty batches is just about a years worth of brewing for me. That would be huge savings also.
The issue of storage? I think I remember reading somewhere that if you top you containers of syrup of with just a thin layer of vodka you lower the risk of contaminants. It also said the vodka won't impart flavors to it. Can't speak to the validity of this. I'll try to figure out where I saw this.

try to get the person to selll you or give you just a few pounds to test the quality of it. If it is good then I wouldnt worry about shelf life too much, a lot of brew shops havethat stuff lying around for a long time. I think that as long as it is out of the light and relatively out of 02 that it should be fine.

Is this hopped or unhopped extract? I've had problems storing hopped extracts for long periods of time, and they have picked up some "off" flavors. Never had a problem with storing unhopped extract for long periods of time. The extract may darken over time, but should still be good if it is unhopped. Basically it is just liquid sugar, so should have a very long shelf life.
