All you hop growers, sign in.
How are your hops doing this spring? Have they poked their heads out of the ground, yet?
Mine are pretty reluctant this year. It's April here in Ohio and I have yet to see any growth. Seems by now I should see something.
Should I be worried?

For a minute there, I thought you were talking about barley.

I'm up in the Akron area.
I have pretty good luck with mine for the past 6-7 years.

After replacing the lattice work for m my deck this weekend, I found my hops. Their tiny purple heads were poking up from underneath the deck.
Cleaned out all that lousy English Ivy so they could get some sunshine.
I'm a little late as I just planted them yesterday. It's been raining like all get-out for the last two weeks and I have had alot to do. I hope I did it right

I'm in Mid Atlantic and mine are already growing like crazy. At least a foot out of the ground. Mine are at least a decade old.

I'm up in Calgary, Alberta. One of my plants is at about 6", the other one is just barely above the surface. This is the third summer for both plants.
I'm in St. Louis and just planted mine a little over two weeks ago. I have one tiny shoot poking out of the ground, but I'm hoping for more!

Sounds like they are healthy.
Chances are, you will not get cones this year. The plant is setting up it's root system. But wait til next year! (A Cleveland sportsfan saying) Hops will soon take over.
The third year is the year they really take off.
BTW, checked mine at lunch today. Already they have grown another 2" since yesterday.

They grow fast and are easily trained to climb lattice or trelis. Mine are quite prolific but again I have had them in excess of 10 years. They will grow very high if you have something for them to climb on. Mine are so thick that they make a screen from my neighbors yard.

Can you get them to crawl on top of a wooden fence? The house my fiancee just bought has a wooden fence around to back yard - it's about the only spot I found that I could grow them.

They'll grow around anything. You have tokeep after them.
The vines wind their way around the deck chairs on the deck if I get too lazy. They might not be there in the morning, but by the afternoon the can rap them several times around a chair leg.

That's how I convinced my lovely wife to let me grow them in the spot I wanted ;).

I made a structure for them to grow on. Worked well. I recommend buying some green plastic netting and hanging it for the vines to climb. You can train them by winding them clockwise and then the will do the rest. They will follow the sun and keep twisting clockwise.

one plant has started with two little shoots (it had sprouts on the rizome when planted) and still waiting for the other. two weeks diddn't seem too bad.
