Going over to my uncles on Sat. and I have started to buy beer for when we all get together. So far I've gotten Lagunitas IPA and SN Wheat. We're having bbq'd burgers and all that good stuff this week.... any suggestions on pairing here? He normally at his house has Miller, Michalob or Sam Adams.... stuff like that.
My initial thoughts are perhaps NC Scrimshaw Pilsner. I found some stuff on food pairing and it seems like most recommend an english or american brown ale, I also found some that said a dry american lager.. which I would favor more at this point.

Darker beers tend to fill me up faster. I tend to love grilled burgers and would be ashamed if I couldn't put down at least a couple or three.
I would go with an IPA on the grounds that I've done it before with success. Many people go with ‘lighter beers’ in the summer and darker in the winter. Personally I like them all at any time.
However, with food you may want to go with a less filling beer.
Ahh… whatever floats your boat, lol.
Btw, are you charcoaling or gas?
I prefer charcoal.

I like to burn something that leaves ashes myself.

Try a Fullers or Redhook ESB with beef for a nice flavor combination. Though a good, crisp Pils or Pale Ale would be a good washer-down selection.

it's gotta be miller lite!
but if you can't find any of that $#it! i'd go for an ipa or a pale. stones pale ale goes good with just about anything, and when i bbq , doesn't really matter what it is, i reach for an ice cold bridgeport ipa! urquell is great ice cold as well (imnsho)

a good roasty brown ale or porter is my favorite, at least with a burger with all the fixings. an amber would also be pretty darn good. all of these, especially the brown and porter, will pick up on the bbq flavors and will also cut through the fat, mustard, onions and whatever else you put on them.

I use hardwood lump charcoal to grill, and with the expeption of when the store is out of it, I rarley us anything else. I won't even consider gas for myself. As far as a good beer to drink with burgers, for something readily available everywhere, I like Newcastle. But I also spring for a good Oatmeal Stout and sometimes a dopplebock. Depends what the weather outside is like.

Hey, Trojan--
You mentioned American lagers as a possibility. Can you get Zig Zag River Lager in your area? We used to get it around here, and I remember it being clean, with a surprising hops bite--almost like an ale. To me, on a warm spring day eating grilled cow flesh, that sounds like a nice pairing. If memory serves, Zig Zag is brewed by Portland or McTarnahan's.

I think we've talked about this once, but up here in the North we BBQ in the snow when it's below zero...takes a manly beer to not freeze in your glass...

Agreed. Weather should play no part when you bbq.
Oh, and charcoal, too. Without a doubt.

Haven't seen Zig Zag and it looks like you can only get McTarnahan's Amber ale, and their scotch ale around here.

Amen to that thought. Still in this area, some of my neighbors look at me funny as I grill outside as three foot of snow id faliing or it is ten below zero.
The only other thought I have about pairing beer and food is
Beer can be food, but food can never be beer.

Have done the snow below zero bbq thing and I REALLY like bbq out here now during the winter even on the cold rainy days we have. .:D
As for pair with burgers, no favorites I just want good beer, though a nice amber or good pils would seem to go best.
