View Full Version : My Inventory of beers as of 4/12/2005

OK here is the inventory of what I have on hand. This includes dry storage, Beer fridge, and cellared beers. It does not include full beers that are from the 30s,40s, 50, and 60s that are part of my breweriana collection and I have missplaced a box that contains vintage Thomas Hardy and Fullers as well as some other commemorative English beers and othe miscellanious brews. I think they are buried under some boxed in another part of my storage room. When I find them I will post them. The THs are from the 80s and early 90s. There is an English Holiday brew that was brewed for friends of the brewery and only 100 bottles made it to the USA. and other stuff. I reckon that the total of all my other full beers would be about 2 cases worth.

Bombers are standard bomber size and any large bottle or wine sized container.

I have no idea how many bottles there are in total as I have not counted them. The first column is the quantitiy of each.

Anyway, I hope this will copy here:

Hey, I only use 7 fingers in a hunt and peck fashion. Typing was my first period class the year I took it in high school. Like I ever made that :D

And that was probably 74. Do you think I was thinking I was going to need typing. We never even thought about home computers back then. Who knew?

fretlessman71

Heck, I used 2nd period typing class to warm up my fingers for 3rd period orchestra! :)

So you think there might be a good beer or two in the list above? Excel does not translate perfectly to this forum. I wish it would line up better.

I would just throw out this word of warning. I have a bit cellared myself, though some unfortunate incidents in the past (Case of Hanssens Kriek R.I.P) have seen me drastically reduce my stored beer stocks. I had a Wvestletern 12 I've been keeping for 6-7 years. It's been cool and well cared for. I've had in the fridge for about a year or so and I opened it the other night. It wasn't off or bad, it just wasn't that good. It had probably made the top of the beer age bell curve and was on it's way down. Whilst many beers can and do age beautifully, most do not. There's a lot on your list that needs to be drunk sooner rather than later (I'm here to help whenever you need brother). You'd hate to do a beer some injustice.

With a few exceptions I don't age anything under about 8% any more.

chazwicke
04-12-2005, 05:28 PM
I buy a few to age but mostly I buy to consume. Due to my previous storage method I sometimes forgot just what I had. Many of these beers are relatively new. (Colorado and Midwest beers). many have been in my fridge. I had it so full that I had to stack cases against the door to hold it closed. I have made a committment to myself to drink at least 1 beer a day. Also That list does not include my stock at the beach would is probably about 3 cases.

You realize that if you go back to the beer store anytime soon, you're just adding fuel to the fire, right? Sometimes it's all I can do NOT to go in and "just have a look around..." :)

chazwicke
04-12-2005, 05:36 PM
I'll have to go. I need to see what new stuff is coming in. Seasonals and the like. I might have to host a realbeer event just to help pare down this list. I have about 6 beers here in the fridge too. (My office) mainly Old Dominion and a bomber of Gordon.

I just did that exact thing. I recently spent mucho hundred dolores on beer at an OUTSTANDING beer store in Lexington, got home and a few days later went out and bought more at my local store. Oh well.

BTW - impressive list Chaz.

I do the same, cannot drive by without stopping to see if there is
anything I missed the day before.

Perhaps we should start a thread where we post our new purchases...and to keep it manageable start a new thread every
month.

And yes chaz, a very impressive list!

If you need help shortening the list, let us know!

I had to. I did not want to. My stash was out of control. Now it is organized and stored well. It was a pain in the butt to do it though. Actually, I am glad that I did because I had forgotton some of the beers in the back of my fridge. Some nice discoveries in there.;)

When I got some beer from KateFan, I went into the paint store to tell my guy there about all I got, and, even though I had 12 bottles of new beer to try chilling in the fridge, I picked up a mixer sixer while I was there. Just ouldn't help myself.

Chaz - if you're having a realbeer event with all those beers, I may make the drive up there. I once drove to Chicago from here - 17 hours straight, but that's my personal record. Google maps says its a little over a 20 hour drive to dc from here.:)

I had plenty of Chesbay and Chesbay Gold. I have some of the breweriana from the old brewery too. I visited it in VA Beach when they first opened. Jim Koller was a veterinarian from PA and he and his brother built the place themselves. A very early micro pioneer. And on the East Coast too. He may have beat Uli Bennowitz of Weeping Radish. The beer was sold in those damn green bottles. (They split pallets with Straub) and the beer suffered. It skunked fast. I think that is ultimately why it failed. It just did not hold up well on the shelves. I have pictures of my visit with Jim and the brewery. That was long, long ago.

I was a huge fan of Chesbay. What kind of Chesbay stuff do you have? I've still got a Chesbay t-shirt that I wear to special occasions like the Dominion brewfest.

I met Jim Koller and Wolfgang Roth at the American Homebrewers Assn conference in DC in 1984. Chesbay Gold was a great pilsner. The original Chesbay was great too. I remember buying cases of the Gold for about $12 in 1986 and that stuff was in good shape. The Gold Cup that followed when the brewery was sold was also a great pilsner, but it lost some character when it became an export style lager. And then there were Dark Horse and the original Virginia Native, both of which I also loved. Gold Cup and Dark Horse now live only as labels on a pair of brewery pint glasses that may break someday 'cause I use them sometimes. As a fan of good lager I was sorry when that brewery disappeared. Oh well.

chazwicke
04-14-2005, 10:28 AM
I also have some Gold Cup and VA native items. I have a mug or two some coasters and labels. I have a Chesbay Green polo somewhere but it was fairly worn. I collect VA and DC breweriana and I have lots of older stuff from local brewers. We are having an informal get together in MD tomorrow evening with several collectors, Gary Heurich, and some of the Portner grand daughters if you are interested. I too really enjoyed all of the beers that eminated from the Chesbay equiptment and Wolfgang Roth. Didn't he also work with Weeping Radish? I was sad to see Chesbay go. It was such an early entry into the micro scene that the understanding of craft beer at that time was not high and people were not sure about this new beer. And the damn green bottles. I loved it when it was fresh.

Can you send me the info on that? It doesn't look like I can get away tomorrow night, but plans could change.

My local beer stuff consists of odds and ends like various National and Gunther glasses that I’ve found in junky "antique" and flea market stores in places like Fells Point and Ellicott City. I keep my pens and pencils in a can of Old German Premium Lager (“The World knows no finer Lager”) from the Queen City Brewing Co. in Cumberland, MD. The previous owner of this can used it to store screws in his basement workshop. There’s a Senate Beer bottle that a friend found in a barn somewhere out near Roanoke, the worn label bears a 1939 copyright mark. Also a Gunther tray, and a Senate Beer matchbook. I've got a curious opener that can also recap the bottle, called "Toppy, The Topper" with an address inside, 912 20th St., NW, DC, now the site of an office building.

I'm not sure what happened to Wolfgang Roth, but one of the brewers at the RFD Jackson event mentioned having worked with him somewhere in the East after the Chesbay-VA Brewing days.

For a while I thought that my liking a micro lager was the kiss of death: Chesbay, Gold Cup, Baderbrau from Chicago, and Thousand Oaks from CA (and now I see elsewhere on this board that Baltimore Brewing is calling it quits!). May Tuppers continue going strong.

Jeff

ps-did I mention that I had to scrape my jaw off the floor after reading your inventory?

chazwicke
04-14-2005, 06:23 PM
I remember Baderbrau and Thousand Oaks. I used to shop down at Berose Liquors on 17th back then. The owner Mark Weiner was really into good beer and did his best to get it in. He was a great source for early microbrews in the DC area. He carried several very early micros.

I'll PM the info about the breweriana gathering.

I think I mentioned that I found some in a liquor store but did not get to the brewery. And I think you mentioned that it might not be the best stuff. Of maybe I just remember that cask Two Hearted and draft batch 6000. I liked the cask beer at GI too.

Warning: Do not let it get to the point that mine has. I will undoubtably have some brews that go bad because that is more beer than I will consume in a years time. I also will be adding to it as new beers come out that I want to try. It is nice to have a healthy reserve but don't go overboard or let it get out of hand.

You've inspired me to check out what I have on hand currently. A much smaller list, but I haven't been doing this long. And will keep in mind your caveats regarding not holding some of them too long.

My stash:

DFH Au Courant 3
DFH Raison D'Etre 1

LOL!

I drank an Oak Barrel Stout Last night that was from my office stash which I did not include on the list. Your list looks great. Made me thirsty just reading it. Hmmmm....2:00 Friday afternoon....I might just go see what else I have im my office fridge right now. I know I have a big bottle of Gordon from Oskar Blues I think. But I better go for one of the 12ozers. I imagine we'll be drinking some Foggy Bottom tonight at the breweriana gathering since Gary Heurich is supposed to be there. I am anxious to try his new pils.

Anyone else feel inspired enough to post their inventories?

Other than the porters, I have a few O'Hara's Irish Stouts, lots of SN Bigfoot from 2002, 2003, and 2005, a little homebrew left from last year, a 750ml bottle of Coopersmith's Jingle Ale, some Old Dominion brews that YOU sent me, what's left of a 12er of 90 Shilling, and a few brown ales that I'm not brave enough to try just yet. Maybe soon...

The Liquor Barn it is. A great place, blows every beer store I've ever been in out of the water.

You're maybe 3rd person I've heard of that knows what Moose Drool is. Damn fine collection, indeed.

Just sent a 6er of Moose Drool to another member in the Mid Atlantic this last week. Don't care for it myself, but lots of people do. Going to try it again soon and see if I can't find a redeeming quality about it at some point - hey, my persistence paid off with Fat Tire; why not this stuff? :)

Any others care to post what is currently in their beer fridges?

Kind like "Whats in your wallet?" I love those commercials.

Mine is pretty pitiful. I have a Franziskaner Hefe - that's it. I do have a Liefmann's Goudenband in the fiancee's fridge.

Anything that hasn't been reviewed from Fret's Porter Thread (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6358&highlight=porter) is in there, as well as a few Capital brews, a Bell's Oberon, a Goose Island Summerfest, and a brown ale I can't remember right now from steveh, some Highland Oatmeal Porters from justin27, several Snoqualmie bombers from BrewDog, a 5-barrel Pale ale and a few 90 Shillings from Odell (old AND new labels), a Fat Tire, Sunshine Wheat, and Transatlantique Kriek from New Belgium, an Old Chub (not me, mind you) and a Dale's Pale Ale from Oskar Blues in Lyons, CO (both in a can), a Paulaner Original Munich (also in a can), 4 Sierra Nevada Celebration Ales, LOTS of SN Bigfoot from several vintages, a Brooklyn Monster BW from 2003 (who sent that to me again? Speak up!), several other barleywines I can't remember right off hand, and, uh, a bunch of other stuff... :o

Since getting the kegerator my bottles on hand have gone way down.

Currently:

2X Anchor Bock Beer (just arrived yesterday)
5X Anchor Our Special Ale 2004 (magnums)
3X Rochefort 8
5X Alaskan Smoked Porter (2000-2003)
6X Samischlaus 1996
1X Golden Dragon (gluten free)
1X Saison Dupont Avec les bon Vieux 2004
1X Casta Millennium
6X Magic Hat #9

For those that like to hold on to beer for a long time, I opened up a Wvestletern 12 recently that had gone off. Sieze the (beer) day.

What do you think of the Oberon? Bruno is sending me a sixer of that and the Two Hearted.

I recently gave away 30 or so bottles from my fridge. I was never going to get to them. The guy that I gave them to said a couple had gone off.

Since setting up the Kegerator at the beach I also gave away about 3 cases of beers left over from last fall to my nephews. I was afraid some might have gone off as well.
When they called to thank me they said they really liked the Bluebird and Oak Barrel Stout the best. Maybe I should have kept those.

Found a good use for one of the remaining bottles of Liquor de Malt as well. My wife cooked our brats in it last Saturday evening.

Yikes - I agree with Fretless. Admittedly, I haven't had Moose Drool in about 5 years, but I was severely underwhelmed when I tried it. AFA Fat Tire, I am the official Realbeer.com Fat Tire apologist....

Yikes - I agree with Fretless. Had to happen someday, didn't it? Don't worry; I'm sure we'll find plenty to disagree on in the future. ;)

AFA Fat Tire, I am the official Realbeer.com Fat Tire apologist.... Had a pint of FT just last week - found out the keg was just tapped that day. VERY enjoyable brew when it's that fresh. Makes me crave biscuits and butter...

Right now, the fridge is housing:

3x Victory Golden Monkey
2x Victory Hopdevil
1x Victory Sunrise Weiss (it grew on me)
3x Riverhorse Summer Blonde (it's OK, uncomplicated beer that I'd place slightly above Yuengling; won't offend, probably good to bring to parties or throw in a beach cooler)
2x Unibroue Blanche de Chambly
1x Bell's Cherry Stout (its days are numbered come tomorrow)
1x Bell's Amber Ale
1x North Coast Pranqster
1x Three Floyds Alpha King
1x Three Floyds Robert the Bruce
4x Sweetwater's Sweet Georgia Brown (sigh - they are dwindling so quickly, Payson)
Bomber - Ommegang Abbey Ale
Bomber - Huyghe Delerium Nocturnum
Bomber - Unibroue Maudite
Bomber - Unibroue Raftman
12x La Trappe tripel

I've also got a case of Negro Modelo, a case of Shiner Bock and a 12-pk of Tecate in the hallway; Texas-themed party coming up this weekend.

You have a tasty selection Hops99. I like the Adnams, the Great Lakes, Bells and 3 Floyds beers the best. (I'm only guessing that the Oberon is good. Bruno is sending a sixer soon. I have not yet tasted it.)

It's definitely one of my favorite Summer beers - very tasty. I've always thought Oberon has just a hint of caramel.

I bought some of this stuff while at my brother's a few months back. In PA you can only buy by the case at a beer distributer. I think I ended up paying $72. At least it was a mixed case of Unibroue, and not just 24 of one.

I really like La Fin du Monde. But I drank too many in one night... that stuff has a pretty high ABV.

Very similar mix still to what I posted before, but just this week added a 6er of Brooklyn Chocolate Stout, a 4 of DFH Aprihop, another case of Troegs Sunshine Pils, and a bomber of Ommegang. And a 6 of DFH 60minute.

Again, That is my inventory from last April. It has decreased some as I have been trying to consume from my stash rather than hitting the paint store every week.
