Brewed my first batch this weekend with my neighbour, and I wondering if aluminum is okay as a brew pot?
The turkey fryer sets I see come with aluminum pots, and it is what I considering getting but I've noticed some books & sites consider it a no no.
Thoughts? Opinions?
I'd sit and mull it over a homebrew but my beer won't be ready for another few weeks ;)

The issue with aluminum is that it is not inert. You're probably ok with teh pot you've got, just don't use any caustic-based cleaners. You can read up here.

Aluminum pots are ok. You may find that it will discolor quickly. Use it until you have the money or need to replace and then go to a stainless pot. Though when I say stainless, I mean a pot pot that has a stainless cook surface buthas other metals in the body to help conduct the heat. Many good ss pots have an aluminum core.
Til then brew and be happy.

Wortchillergoal,
Do you know how the Snaky Kegs are constructed? I know alot of people use them, but arn't they all SS? Will they conduct heat properly?

Thanks to brewmonkey, I believe I have an idea about their construction. They are like a multi ply pot. The beer contact surface is stainless that is wrapped by what I believe to be aluminum. This should conduct heat very well across the face of the stainless.

I thought they were all ss also.I converted one and I was surprised how easily my hole saw went through the side of the keg. Then when cutting out the top it was a hell of a time. Now I am showing slight rust in bottom of keg.my conclusion;top is stainless, rest aluminum.BTW I have not noticed any off flavors in my beer,I have brewed prolly 20 batches with this keg.

I'm going to be moving my brewingprocedures outdoors soon and don't really have the cash for an SS pot. How many of you are using aluminum? Can I put one of those weldless spigots on an aluminum pot?

Sankey's are all stainless. if it was aluminum interior, it would quickly discolor like all other aluminum pots do...
stainless can rust, you just need to get some BKF, a green scrubbie, and then let it air dry for a week to repassivate...
Hogie, yes you can put a weldless fitting into an aluminum pot, I've done it. just make sure you mount the fitting high enough so it clears the ring around your burner. (just a little experience showing there... I ended up cutting a 3/4" notch out of my stand so the dang pot would sit properly...)

Found some 22 quart stainless stell pots at Wally Mart for ~$40, not good for all grain but great for extract.
Thanks all.

good luck, that's a pretty decent deal. one thing, make sure you turn the flame off when adding extract. it's pretty much a standard rule, but SS pots tend to be thinner (unless you're spending $$$) and will scorch more easily...
