I believe the Mid-Atlantic is serious in trying to overtake the Great Midwest in posts, so in order to combat that, we need to react so.... Who from the midwest states likes beer??

WI would love another shot at MSU (or Ill)...but somehow need to get by N. Carolina tomorrow...

Now...we're finally getting down to business! Great thread! :D

The fact is, we midwesterners love our beer. I think we have some of the best microbreweries around. Let's not let those easterners sneak up on us. Right now there is only about a 100 post differential so keep these posts coming!

BTW, are there any other Yardhouses in the midwest, except for the one in Glenview, IL? My husband and I really enjoy the variety of beers on tap that they have (about 110), though they don't have any cask beers.

Go Illinois!

I love vanilla too, so for that reason I could go for a bit more Vanilla in it, but that would make it overpowering for 99% of people. It's really tasty, good vanilla presence and reasonably light bodied (compared to some porters I've had recently) It may be a bit much for a session beer, but it's one of those you want to savor... I liked it better slightly chilled than when it warmed up.

Well, I drank the Fullers last night; the high point of my night, given the baseball score.

I had chilled it for two days then poured it and let it come up to temp. Do you all find this makes a difference? Any road, I found it to be very nicely balanced. Al thought it was not hoppy enough but I thought it started out malty and finished with a nice hop nudge, a reminder that hops were there without beating you up over the head (a la Arrogant Bastard).

When you're in the mood for hoppy, this may not be the beer you're looking for, but for mellow enjoyment I can't think of many that would beat it.

I like it very much and it may be my favorite beer that we have sampled at our online tasting. I have a few in my fridge. I have also supped one at GBBF with Richard. A very nice beer.

Sorry about the game last night, soxy. I watched the first six innings. The Big Unit looked pretty decent for the first game of the season. Wells didn't quite match up, though he looked good at times. Too bad Matsui robbed you guys of that home run. Oh well, take heart, it's a long season and as your team proved last year, it's not how you start, it's how you finish! My Twinks start this afternoon in Seattle and hopefully we'll have a wager to place against each other come ALCS time! :)

Quote "...Well, I drank the Fullers last night; the high point of my night, given the baseball score. ..."

All Fuller's beers are good and this is, in part, due to their excellent balance. 1845, while strong, does not tick you in the teeth with its power; while hoppy, the hops linger more in the after taste than attack the tongue; it's malty and full-bodied without having the cloying maltiness of some old ales.

I have drunk beers that approach or even exceed 1845 in some respects, but I have never found one that equals its overall balanced quality.

My co-worker, a Cardinals fan, has put up a "Morale Boosting Corner" at work. It has a place for wins and losses for both our teams and is out of the way and hidden from view. Our little secret!

During the day game on Wednesday I had to work, so had the game playing through the computer and on the speakers VERY softly whilst I sat on the floor taping spine labels on books. All I lacked was a beer. <sigh> Don't think that would be a very good idea at work though.

Puffed up? Puffed up? It's spring, Chaz, spring, when a young (or old) woman (or man)'s heart turns to baseball! And for the first time since I started following the Sox in 1975 I enter the season in a state besides absolute hysteria. I do hope it isn't another 86 years before we take the championship again, but nothing, NOTHING will ever compare to this win!

And that's something to celebrate with other baseball-loving folk, especially over a beer. :D

Tonight is the home opener for my beloved Twins (against the hated White Sox) and I wish I could be there, but alas, I have to take my wife out for her birthday. Her birthday is always within a day or two of the Twins home opener and I managed to talk her into going as her birthday present last year, but this year she wants to go to a restaurant that is closing in the near future. (Hopefully they'll have the game on in the bar...)

Tonight the Twins will be honoring Bob Casey, who passed away recently. He was the only PA announcer in the entire history of the organization. Crusty, but lovable old guy who was 79 years old. One of the last "old school" PA announcers left in baseball and truly one of the "sounds of the Twins". We'll miss him. He was known for befreinding players on both sides of the field and occaisionally "flubbing" names, although most suspect it was usually intentional "ribbing" of the player. Some of his most memorable "flubs":

CASEY-ISMS

Correct names of visiting players and Casey's take
Troy Glaus - Tony Glaus
Tony Graffanino - Tony Graffananotto and Tony Graffioni
Adam Kennedy - Pat Kennedy
Grady Little - Jerry Little
Trot Nixon - Troy Nixon
Otis Nixon - Amos Otis and Amos Nixon
Jon Nunnally - Joe Non-ally
Keith Osik - Keith Osk
Michael Tucker - Miguel Tucker
Dustin Mohr - Dustin Hoffman
Nomar Garciaparra - Garcia Parra
Hideki Matsui - Hideki Matsushi

Sept. 19, 2004, vs. Orioles: Twins pitcher Johan Santana gets strike two on Jose Leon, and Casey begins to announce Jay Gibbons as the next batter. A Twins official calls down to Casey to tell him Leon hasn't struck out yet. Leon strikes out on the next pitch.

"Please stop throwing things. This is an important game! Now quit this!" -- Casey, after fans threw objects at the Twin-turned-Yankee Chuck Knoblauch during a game in 2001.

And my personal favorite story:

Twins players, especially in the late 1980s and early 1990s, played jokes on him, most notably, during Game 7 of the 1987 World Series.

Casey was locked in the dugout bathroom by players during a TV break. Casey, thinking he was late, rushed back to his microphone when a well-timed phone call was placed there.

Casey put the phone to his ear and discovered it had shaving cream on it. He put the phone down to grab a towel to wipe his face and found it, too, filled with shaving cream. Twins slugger Tom Brunansky organized the prank. "All I heard was laughter," Casey said in 1998. "Those dummies didn't know they were in the seventh game of the World Series."

great stories dave. Twins are looking good this year. it's always nice to hear about old school announcers. when they take the live organ out of dodger stadium, that will be a tradgedy. and when vin scully retires.

Go here (http://www.realbeer.com/discussions/showthread.php?s=&threadid=6949&perpage=15&pagenumber=1), follow posts to the end, join in the scorn and satisfaction that the majority of Midwest posts have more than 2 replies and complete sentences. ;)

S.

By the way, they aren't ahead of us as of...now.

I'd say many of our posts have been about local events and happy hours. But I am also now satisfied that we have banded together and shown that we can do if and when we want to. !;)

That wasn't "puffed up," Nationals Boy. We take our sports very seriously out here.

S.

What's with that team swiping the old Senators' logo for their cap?

I think they should be called the Senators.....See how you baited me into posting in this thread just one more time by using sports as bait.

Balderdash! There has been no puffing by us. We just love our beer.;)

BTW, Steve, I did read that link and saw the post by Chaz about chatting. Does this board have a chat function? If not, we have one on wordcraft, and you don't have to join the board to use it. We have a regular chat, for example, every Saturday at noon (and other times on an ad hoc basis), CST, and several of us from all over the world chat about words & language. As an administrator there, I invite any you to do the same about beer. You'd just have to schedule it. We find it rather fun.

See, Chaz...this post had substance!

Just don't ask me for mine if you like sports!

I'm not a big sports fan either. Redskins yes but not as rabid as in my youth. And I am glad that DC has a new baseball team even though I'm not a fan of the sport.

I'll trow you another freebie here. Mid Atlantic is in good company with our fine Midwestern contingent. You guys have our esteemed admiration. I can personally vouch for the Midwestern hospitality. So if we are a bit ahead sometimes or a bit behind I know we are in good company.

Oh sure...steve isn't....ooohhh....steve...
just kidding! :D

I think he may have tossed them a freebie or two, as chaz has us.
Geography takes a back seat to the brotherhood (and sisterhood) of good beer!!

More importantly...are you and the hubby joining in when Stod comes to Chitown??

I alway knew that women were more competitive than men.

BTW, I had an epiphany. "Aha!", I thought, "the mid-atlantic has a higher population! That's why they caught up to us." So, I went to the U.S. census (2003 projections), and added up the numbers in the states in the midwest and then the midatlantic area. Which do think has more people? I was surprised.

The midwest has 59,545,190
The mid-atlantic has 56,280,434

So, folks, I think the midatlantics have won, fair and square. Darn! However, I will give up the competition since I am the only one left. No fun then!

Besides...I do like their beer! And Chaz is an awfully nice guy. I am still tasting all the wonderful beer he brought us!

However, I do have my self-respect. I won't post in the mid-atlantic forum!

Nah - no losses, win/win situation around here.

S.

Besides, we built our total without any prompting or "competition." What does that prove? Motivation? Yes, I believe so. ;)

Oh dear. Chaz brings in the guilt factor!;)

You know I have the utmost respect for you too...in fact for everyone here. I am impressed with how friendly and respectful everyone is. I was having fun with the number of posts, that's all. We all know the best beer drinkers are in England, anyway!

I will post something in the mid-atlantic forum; I'll have to think of something to post about!
