I'm just curious about how the Brick got the Gales when the Reef can't. Dave says he ordered it from B United a long time ago -- maybe the Reef's is on its way?

I think it was a mixup by House of Wines to be honest. I get the feeling the delivered the two Yorks and one was supposed to be Gales.

I've not been partial to House of Wine customer service.

Celebrator? And the rest? I'm so there, dude!

What time does the upstairs open?

You said it! Thanks Fritz! Any idea when the Gales will be there. I didn't see Dave or Diane at RFD on Monday.

Oh and I did manage a pint of Tuppers on cask tonight at Old Dominion. I was picking up some growlers for a few Mid Westerners I'll be seeing next week.:D

Anybody been to the Brick recently? Has the tap lineup changed? I'm planning on dropping in this weekend after an uncharacteristically long absence ...

Not sure what is on now. During the Maytag tasting I drank as much as the New Albion Stout as I could then Rodenbach. I think they had Gouden Carolus then too. The beer engines had been broken:( , Let us know what turns up. And as an aside, They had the new Coniston Old Man in bottles. I can't recall the taste after so many Rodenbachs. I'd like to see tasting notes. I'll just have to head down myself soon.

Spoke too soon. This just in from Dave:

Thursday, May 12th One night only

Sam Calagione, author/raconteur/entrepreneur extraordinaire joins us for a four course meal featuring the pairing of his great beers (including vintage WorldWide Stout) with treats from our kitchen.

The menu for the evening ~

Spring Salad

Mesclun mix with mushrooms

Paired with Indian Brown Ale

Mussels in 90 Minute IPA

Paired with 90 minute I P A in cask

(we hope, if we can’t get a cask in time we’ll do 90 minute thru the randall!)

Sliced Duck Breast

With seasonal vegetables

Paired with Raison D’Etra

Cocoa Pete’s Chocolate Rounds

Paired with vintage WorldWide Stout

Sam’s doing a multiple city tour promoting his book(!) “Brewing Up A Business” He’ll speak about his experiences getting Dogfish Head going and the book writing process fersure but he IS our boy Sam after all so who knows what else will happen.

All attendees will receive a FREE copy of the book and a FREE Dogfish Head logo’ed gold rimmed Belgian Tulip glass (wow!)

His agents told me all other venues were charging between $55 and $60 bucks for this event but I’ve been reading his book where he talks about beneficial inefficiency, and whaddaya know. Turns out Dave has been one of them beeninefficients for a long time! Such a DEAL I have for my loyal Brickies!

We’re only charging $45.00 for our tickets! $45.00 gets you four great beers, four delicious courses, a book, a glass, you get to see at least one DVD done by one of my crack staffers and an evening with our buddy Sam! This event is being held in RFD’s back room. Doors open at 6, we never start at 7. Call 202-289-2030 to reserve your tickets NOW!

Y’all know we’ve been doing some upgrades to the good old Brick upstairs. A bunch of taps, big TV’s. What next you ask? Indoor archery? Nah. New toilets? Well, yeah but I don’t wanna talk about that here ferchrissakes. An ATM? Well that happened like months ago at both places. A hop garden? OK I admit it, after two years of failed tomatoes and hot pepper crops we’re trying our hand at growing cascade hops in RFD’s courtyard garden. Worth a laugh, eh? But that ain’t it either. Well, it seems we’ve turned our attention to the hotel upstairs. We’ve added cable TV and high speed internet access to select rooms upstairs at the Inn. This may not be much to y’all but to us longtimers it’s like boldly moving into the 20th century!

AND . . . Holy HOTSPOT Cableboy! We have added wireless high speed internet access to the Brickskeller dining room lunchtimes from 11AM till 5PM Monday thru Friday! Now you no longer have to endure $5 coffees to conduct your online “business” (teehee) during the afternoon! Bring your wireless laptop to the Brick and choose from a list of hundreds of beers that cost a LOT less than a cup of roasted bean juice and surf the very same internet you used to enjoy whilst overpaying for your designer caffeine infusions! A wireless Brickskeller? WHAT is going ON here?????? Well??? What IS????

The current tap lineup at the Brick is –

Anchor Liberty Ale

Double Diamond

Gouden Carolus Triple refermented in keg (very rare!)

Leffe Bruin

Lindemans Framboise

Magic Hat Heart of Darkness

North Coast Rasputin Russian Imperial Stout

Ommegang Hennepin

Ommegang Three Philosophers (also very rare!)

Rodenbach

Stella Artois

We’ve got some GREAT kegs waiting for their turn on the taps. This summer we’ll be featuring a constantly changing selection of delicious German Hefeweizens, including the first kegs of Spaten Franziskaner in town in years and Weihenstephan HefeDunkle, a great dark weissbier from the world’s oldest brewery! In the next week or less we will have some just plain unbelievable beers coming on line both at the Brick and at RFD downtown, always DC’s best and biggest selection of beers on tap don’tyaknow! I’m not going to mention all of them here because sometimes I get the feeling these mailers are other bars research papers. (meooowwww) We may just have some new twists on world class brews coming up as well that I promise you NOBODY has ever seen or tasted before.

OK then. Sam’s book club on May 12th

Philosophy on Tap for the next six Tuesdays (you CAN purchase tickets for individual nights at the door which opens at 6)

Stone brewing in June

An evening with Dylan Thomas July 6th

The Smithsonian Beer Gazetteer 2005 starting July 11 with Russian River brewguru Vinnie Cilurzo

July 20 an evening of Whiskey tasting with the Smithsonian

Wireless high speed internet lunchtimes

New toilets.

What else?

I dunno. I'm tapped.

That July 6th date might be worth showing up for---I coulda sworn Dylan Thomas has been dead for, like, quite a while......

No need to respond, i'm j/k.......

Sorry, Chaz, was there last Friday. Played "beers from a hat" and didn't fare too well, so we went upstairs and indulged in some Rodenbach (would've been drinking that all night, but got stuck downstairs with the group). Who is defintely going to the DFH tasting next week?

chaz, i'm thinking mid-June for a couple reasons---I got three beers into the AHA second round (Baltimore this year), plus we need to visit our little Dupont Circle resident, plus I need to check in on the p's, plus I actually like DC in June.

This month's Washingtonian had some beer bars I wasn't familiar with---Ugly Mugs in Barracks Row, for example.....

FINALLY made it to Brick's upstairs on Friday early evening before heading out to see a friend's band at Grog and Tankard at 9. The tap lineup was pretty much the same as has been discussed here -- Lindemans Framboise, Double Diamond, Hoegaarden, Rodenbach, Gouden Carolus, Old Rasputin Imperial Stout and some others I can't recall (that whole night is a bit foggy). I stuck mostly with the Gouden Carolus, which was EXCELLENT and really knocked me for a loop straight away. (Still recovering!) Also managed to convert two swill drinkers sitting next to me, first to Hoegaarden and then to the Gouden, which was my big triumph for the night.

I did get a sample of the Rodenbach, and... hmm, it's a bit sour for my tastes. I could see myself drinking it, though, if I were of a certain mood. The bartender told me that geuzes were even more sour. I'm not sure they'd be my cup of tea, but it did make me morbidly curious about geuzes. Now I'm going to have to try one (I fear I may be with Steveh on this one, though)!
