I'm wanting to trade for a 6er (or couple 22s) of Stone Levitation Ale if anyone can get some. Other local California beers certainly considered too.
I'm in Cincinnati...

I'll look and see what I can find. I've been innundated with beer lately - it was my birthday over the weekend and everyone knew exactly what to get for me! This means that my trips to the beer store are going to be almost nonexistent unless I'm trading with someone, but when I get a chance to sneak over there I'll let you know what I find.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!!!! Sounds like it was good. You're still just a young pup. I hope they carded you before they gave you the beer. Again, HAPPY BIRTHDAY my friend.

Yeah, we had a good time. Went to Buca di Beppo. Got lots of beer, including a bomber of Avery's The Beast and a Great Divide sampler 12er. Instead of candles on a cake, they bring out this candelabra that looks like something from the old Dark Shadows TV show - pretty cool! Got to try Avery's Redpoint Ale on tap - really good! Don't usually care for reds, but this was very nice.
I'll be by the beer store this afternoon, looks like - I'll see what they've got in the way of Levitation Ale!

What did you think of Buca's? That chain's origins are here in the Twin Cities. (Small chain, I think they only have a half dozen or so locations.) I've been there several times. Great place for large groups. They serve family style, so we always have about 3 days worth of lunches we take home with us when we go there. I've heard that they are in some financial/legal trouble lately though. Something about counting employee lunches as expenses, among other things....I was disappointed when I heard that. I really like their food and am not thrilled about supporting a place with dubious accounting practices....

Food was great; service was also terrific. Have 3 days of penne pasta and 4 servings of tiramisu in the fridge waiting for us. Hadn't heard anything about their finacial situation, but then again, I don't get out much. My memoirs someday will be compiled in a book called "My Life As A Mushroom". ;)

Makes the local news here since they are a local company. Checked out the newspaper site today and it seems they're in a bit more hot water than I thought...let go some high level execs recently, using company funds for personal use, etc., currently in the process of "restating" their books....

Yes, Happy Birthday, Fret!! :) Watch out for "The Beast"...it lives up to it's name!
fretlessman71
03-22-2005, 04:09 AM
Thanks for the well wishes, folks. "The Beast" isn't going to be consumed anytime soon - I've promised the giftgiver that I'd bring it over to his house at some point when it's nice and mellow, and we're ready to get nice and mellow... :)

Oh yeah, HJ - I can get Levitation Ale. What's in your neck of the woods that I couldn't live without? :)

Ever heard of Thirsty Dog? It's in northern Ohio and they've been gaining some recognition lately... their Hoppus Maximus American Amber is pretty darned good. I can get 6ers just about anywhere around here. Their distribution is very local. http://www.thirstydog.com
and in relation to your porter experiment the Robust Porter is good too.
or maybe you have some more specific requests?
chazwicke
03-22-2005, 10:52 AM
Ahhh another porter for the list. I'll be looking for some of these brews on my way across Ohio.

Porters are always good; anything you're passionate about is equally bound to be good. Anything "big and weird" out there that I ought to know about, too?

Are you going to trade for one Fret? To add to your list?

03-22-2005, 11:42 AM
If we give it about 2 weeks, probably. I need to make some room before I get anything else! :o
chazwicke
03-22-2005, 12:33 PM
I know that problem! I have no room but I'm planning on doing a little shopping on my trip anyway.

I'd keep stuff on the floor next to the fridge, but my wife likes it pretty warm in the apartment... my "beer cellar" is right next to an outside wall, so stuff stays dark and cool in there - no more than 60°. I could almost pluck a brew out of the cabinet and pop it open if I wanted to (and if it was cold enough outside). But I've run out of room there, too, and there are 2 12ers in the bottom of the reg. fridge. I've been given "permission" from The Boss to keep them there, "so long as it doesn't become a habit...." ;)

My wife is tolerating some spillover into the kitchen fridge too. I have cases stacked around my beer fridge. It is in our garage. My cellar is under some shelves in my basement storage room.

03-22-2005, 01:31 PM
hehe.... i have a DBF and 2 cellars, the smaller one is currently trying to take over as a beer cellar :D stays nice and cool in the winter... about 50-60 and nearly the same in the summer. I do, in fact, drink most of the bottles straight from there.

Hey, Hark - just checked out the Thirsty Dog site... Old Leghumper is a name I recognize from the BeerAdvocate "best of porter" list. Very cool! And it sounds like I'd like just about anything they bottle. Their website just lists 4 that are available by bottle - is it up to date?
HarkJohnny
03-22-2005, 02:57 PM
yes it's pretty up to date. I see the porter, siberian and hoppus regularly, haven't seen the baltic one though so I'd say that's what's available.
how do you want to arrange the trading.... the Levitation is 22oz I'd guess? and I know these guys do 6packs.
fretlessman71
03-22-2005, 03:17 PM
Actually, no - it's in 6er form. Ought to be pretty straight up, and there's plenty here - it's not going anywhere. Is Levitation all you want, or is there something else too?

I've had and can get the IPA, Ruination, AB, Double AB, Smoked Porter, Imperial Stout, Russian Stout, and BarleyWine. My buddy brought back some of the Pale Ale for me and I've had the seasonal 7th and 8th Anniv. Also have a few bottles of 030303 and 040404 so Levitation is the one that eludes me (and of course the 020202 as everyone else!)
If you know of any great Colorado brews I MUST have then let me know. I've had most of the stuff from Breckenridge, Dillon Dam, Backcountry, Boulder, Rockies and Tommyknocker. I hear New Belgium is some good stuff.

Hark, I would have him send Odell's 90 Shilling.:D
fretlessman71
03-22-2005, 10:04 PM
That can be arranged! :)
HarkJohnny
03-23-2005, 08:37 AM
fret and chaz... i completely trust your judgement.... Odell's sounds good then... I've enjoyed the small handful of 90's that I've had.
now... on to how many bottles or 6ers, etc...
I've never traded before so i don't know what's easier to ship.

Really, I'd say tell me how much you'd like of each one, ideally. We can do a 6er of Levi and 6 others, or you can let me keep one of the Levi-s and I'd replace it with another CO selection, or whatever you'd like to do. Is Thirsty Dog the only beer 'round there worth mentioning?
HarkJohnny
03-23-2005, 03:22 PM
hmmm.... i'll have to give that some thought. All of the local places are brewpubs and they don't bottle. Barrelhouse (my local fav) was just sold and is becoming a true brewery that will bottle and distribute (no more food front end) but they say everything will "be the same"... we'll see.
Great Lakes is probably the closest "big/known" brewery... there's also BBC in Lousiville http://www.bbcbrew.com/bottledbeer.php bottles an Amber, a Pale Ale and a .... Porter! hehe (hit him in the weak spot!)
HarkJohnny
03-24-2005, 10:14 AM
ideally I'd like at least 4 bottles of the Levitation, I intend to share at least one, maybe two if he's lucky! with a friend.
And since you mentioned Fat Tire in another thread if you could wrangle me a couple bottles of that too I'd be ever grateful.
I still feel like this is too "one-sided" and that nothing I can offer would compare these elusive and incredible beers i'm bugging you for. Though I will say I enjoyed very much the Thirsty Dog Porter.

We can always trade growlers... all you have to do is don't open it once it's bottled at the brewery, and duct-tape the SNOT out of it and pack it very well in peanuts. Just a thought....

YUCK!
Can you get Growlers of the 90 Shilling?
HarkJohnny
03-24-2005, 04:04 PM
lol @ both of you
i like the idea of the growler but who know's what kind of abuse/temp/elevation changes these things might have to go through. a 1/2 gallon of sticky exploded beer and glass can't be pretty!
Stodbrew

Shipping growlers really isn't a problem. I've shipped several growlers and I've never had a problem with them leaking, let alone exploding. I say go for it!

Stod, I know several of those who got growlers of your beers. They all said it was excellent. Any good prospects?
Stodbrew
03-24-2005, 08:50 PM
Thanks, Chaz. I just wish I could send out some more. :(
As far as prospects go, unfortunately, there really isn't much going on around here. I've talked to some people and maybe something will come of it. Ideally, I'd like to buy, or, more likely, find some investors to help buy the brewery. We'll see what happens.

I can attest to Stod's success with shipping growlers. It works wonderfully.
Chaz? 3F? Or are you gonna stop by there on your trip? they're only open thursday night, friday night and saturday afternoons.

hmm... well then here is the site for the local brewpub which does growlers. The other place, Barrelhouse... which is better, is the one that just went under renovation and the other one is a Rock Bottom. There are a few other places around but usually it's not much of anything special.

there's not much in the way of explanation but the amber and pale are my personal favs.

OK... made a stop at the paint store today and picked up a 6er of Thirsty Dog Robust Porter, a 6er of TD Hoppus Maximus and and also a 6er of Bell's Porter (though I now see you already have this one). On a side note, the place normally carries Westy 12 however they were out of stock. (is this, or is this not, the beer you have been "stalking" as was stated in another thread??)
So if everything is still on we can figure out total bottles and such. thanks... this really means alot to me!

OK - tell you what - I'll send you a 6er of the Levitation and a mixer 6er of some CO stuff (90, Fat Tire, whatever you want)... and you can return some of the Thirsty Dog porter and Hoppus Maximus (can you get any of the Imp. Stout by chance?) and Westy 12 when it comes in. Really, the stuff you send to me can wait - I've run out of room for more beer! :D
I'll try to send that package out either late this week or early next. Capiche?

no problem on the imperial stout... they had plenty and I'll keep checking with them and some other places for the W12 for you.
choose whatever you think is something I should try from your area for me. i trust your judgement!

Actually I was not online in the morning. Sorry! I did get to Hofbrau Haus in Newport and I pulled off for gas on the road where Watson Bros. was but it was fairly early (11:00) and my wife and son were still full from breakfast and we had a long trek ahead of us so we went on. I got to Columbus for lunch and had some cask and beer from the Friday Firkin at Barleys. Cinci was kind of a spur of the moment diversion on my trip. I would have enjoyed meeting you as well. Nice area.
