View Full Version : Bizarre SG readings

I brewed a beer today based on a clone recipe of Dead guy Ale.

After everything was in the carboy, my SG reading was 1.092 (71°F)...I was expecting around 1.070 or just under.

I checked it again after about 6 hours...1.062 (66°F).

I'm not sure how to explain the difference...I did use Irish moss which I usually don't use. Could the suspended particles of protein and such create an artificially high SG??; i did notice a lot of floaties in the wort.

Most of my beers hit ProMash's estimates within a couple of points. This is the first one to have this kind of discrepancy.

if you didn't do a full boil, I'm guessing that your concentrated wort wasn't fully mixed with the cold water addition...

Just like Danno said.

The proteins couldn't have the effect due to the fact(like you said) that they are suspended and not in solution.
