is it protocol to tip when buying beer at a drive-thru? i've kinda noticed the split-second hang-around manuever when being handed change.

what do you do?

heh, we have a little drive through dairy over here (the only one I know about in all of So Cal), and it was the first place me and my buddies ever bought beer underage without having our ID's asked for (bought an 18 pack of Bud Light- can never forget that). As for a Tip, nope. But when I was little my mom use to go there a lot and never saw her tip the people or even see motions from them at hinting it.

I've never had a position on tipping until I saw "Reservoir Dogs".

I agree with Mr. Pink :D

Do you tip at the drive thru at the fast food place?

Didn't think so. I usually don't tip if I'm picking up carryout either.

I'm a terrible tipper. I always ask my girlfriend what a good tip would be, and I usually think she's too high. But I always go with what she suggests.

I'm cheap.

Work as a server for awhile - or, better yet, ask your servers what they like to see for a tip. Chances are they'll tell you 15-20% is good. And remember, that extra dollar you add to the tip probably isn't going to hurt you much, but it just might make your server's day! Plus, they'll remember you when you come in the next time. :)

TIPS = To Insure Proper Service. It works!

How about those Starbucks people with the little plastic jar at the window. That really bugs the crap out of me. You don't see Burger joints pullin this crap do you? Like I have anything extra after the small cup of regular coffee for $1.80. I always ask for a small medium or large also. They always correct me with the hip coffee shop lingo. (tall, grande and the other thing). I'm getting worked up as I type.

I am a generous tipper when the service is good. Usually 20% or better. I've also worked in the restaurant industry. It is hard work. I don't mind spreading it around a little bit. I bonus my employees too. If I have a good month They have a good month. I hate cheap people. A lot of my friends are cheap. I'm not sure why. I know people who will drive across town to save 25 cents on an item. Or will drive out of their way to save 3.00 at the cash machine. Stupid! My brother used to drive 10 miles to save 25 cents a gallon on gas. The Govt. rate was 32 cents at the time. That is what they determined it costs to drive a car per mile. So he was actually losing money. Silly. I also hate cheapness when it comes to quality. You get what you pay for. My solid wood furniture will be around a lot longer than some Ikea piece of crap. And will hold it's value too. It is the same in the world of food and beer. I don't mind paying a bit more for quality. Sorry for my rant.

And I did like Spicoli's take on Starbucks too. Pretty funny.

My stepsister used to date a guy who always tipped very poorly; he even went back to pick up the money off the table that she had left once. As they were walking to the car, the server stuck her head out the door and hollered: "Hey - only a SKUNK leaves a CENT!" :D

Beer (and sometimes food), get priority as far as spending goes. I always research an item before I buy it, and I'm a pretty patient person, so I wait until it's on sale. My girlfriend was surprised that I thought $13 was a lot of money for a gallon of paint. I figure, if something's too expensive, I can probably live without it.

Oh, and I happen to like IKEA's designs!!!

Depending on the location and type of establishment your tip should be anywhere from 15-22% although it may be lower for some situations like buffet's where the server generally only clears plates and brings drinks.

I have news for those who are cheap tippers and like to frequent the same place time and time again. You are known to all the servers and if you have made a habit of giving a bad tip they will do the same with the service. You will get just enough service because they know that no matter how hard they try you are going to be a cheapskate anyway.

Tipping at a drive through? NEVER they have provided no extra service that you could not have done yourself by walking in to the store.

While some people might think wait staff make big bucks you will be shocked to learn that they make generally less then $3 an hour and they see none of that as it is what covers all the taxes on their tips. When you sit in a servers section and they wait on you, unless they seriously screwed up you should be leaving a decent tip based on PRE-Tax and PRE-Comp. That means if you have a coupo for buy 1 get 1 free, you tip based on the price of 2 not 1.

Tipping is a subject I hold near and dear as I worked my way through school as a waiter. If the server has earned a crappy tip you are obligated to let the manager know why you are leaving it so that the deficiency can be corrected.

This establishment called "Coldstones Ice Cream" (not sure if it's in any other states than CA- although there is one in LV), you order an ice cream any way you want and they make it for you right there on a board (ex- chocolate brownie, they take chocolate ice cream and crush up a real brownie in it and roll it around).... if you tip them the whole staff has to sing a song.... kinda funny.

They are here in KC and they are kick ass. We actually have 4 or 5 of them in the area now. The only problem I have is that even their smallest ice cream is way to much.

I love to leave them a tip and make them sing. I will even stop eating the ice cream to go back up and put some more money in the jar. :D

I have been but have not tipped. I have been in the ice cream business, owned a Ben&Jerry's, did not allow my employees to put out a tip cup. They could take tips if offered.

The main point for this post thought besides serving size is the fat content of the ice cream. Coldstone has a pretty hefty butterfat content around 14%. Eat alot and grow alot.

My wife and I are extremely generous when we tip as long as the service warrants it (my wife's cocktail glass should never go dry). Sometimes its as high as 60% but like fret said, they remember you. Whenever we return to the establishment, even if there is a 45 minute wait for a table, we never wait longer than 5 minutes if even that long.

As for the drive-thru, I've never tipped, nor have I seen it happen.

My Mom worked as a server, cocktail waitress and bartender for years and years and is the most generous tipper I know. I learned at her knees and it just PAINS me to eat out with my Daddy because he is such a horrific tipper. If he buys the food I ALWAYS leave the tip.

Yep, Brewmonkey; when I worked at Pizza Hut way back when, the servers got $2.45 because the supposition is they'll make it to minimum wage on tips. But if they don't report as many tips as the government THINKS they should have reported, they get taxed on what the IRS thinks they should have made, whether they did or not. It took my sister in law nearly five years to pay off an IRS adjustment on her Black Angus tips...

South Town Beverage in Rochester is a drive thru. Great beer selection and a pretty good selection of cigars too. They will even unload your empties for you.

As for tipping, the last time I was there (a while ago) we let them keep the empties we returned. Probably 3 or 4 dollars. Figured why not? The kid was helpful, friendly and really hustled to get us on our way.

Sorry, I have a bad habit of forgetting the threads I post in.

I found the script from that scene but it is quite, shall I say, blue. If you're really curious just Google "reservoir dogs tip scene" and select the third link down. The tip conversation is down a ways on the page. Oh, and it's Mr. White not Mr. Pink

Now, having said I agree with him is a bit tongue in cheek. My wife put herself through college on tips and for a time supplemented our household income with them. I tend to tip very generously.

I heard a phrase way back that goes, "You don't tip for your service this time, you tip for service next time." This is definately true.

I Germany it's considered generous when you round up a bill of 45.50 EUR to 47.00. Giving 15 % tip (that'd be almost 7 EUR tip alone) would brand you a nutcase. I think tipping in the US is way out of control. A tip that's mandatory is not a darn TIP anymore.

I've only been to a drive-thru a handful of times back in the day and never tipped (never thought it was expected).

I have backed off some on my tipping at restaurants---I always was a generous tipper, maybe too generous---at least 20%+. Now I've kind of backed that off to @ 15%. I'll hike it up to 20% if the service was particularly memorable and stellar, which is seldom the case these days.

I've rarely been the victim of exceptionally bad service. The most notable place was a sports bar called The Locker Room in the Beechmont area of Cincinnati (Hark J' are you familiar?). My best friend and I kept getting this waitress that was terrible---shitty attitude, bad service, the works. I started leaving her pennies or no tip at all. I'm not afraid to throw it back in their face if its called for---but ya gotta be pretty bad.

Again, some servers just think that YOU'RE the one who's the jerk... they'll never understand that you're not just being cheap. Best bet is to speak with the manager, and use your server's name (doing it in a clear, easy-to-understand-across-the- whole-restaurant voice never hurts either), and let them know why you're going to go across the street to the other place for a few weeks.

I usually get decent if not outstanding service. Most of the successful restaurants know that service is a premium.

Oh, I concur.....I never really had a consistently terrible experience anywhere except for my friend at the Locker Room. And back then I was @ 20 years old and never thought, or cared, I guess, to complain to the manager about her.

Today, my response would certainly be more vocal.
