View Full Version : Heading to Chicago
Stodbrew

It looks like I will be going to Chicago at the end of April. Looks like it'll be April 24 to May 1. My wife will be out there on business, so I figured I should go, too. I will also have my son with me. I'm not entirely sure of the specifics yet, where we'll be staying, etc. but I'll post here as soon as I find out. Anyone want to hook up for some beers?

I think where she'll be is in Oakbrook. And not being at all familiar with the geography of the Chicago area, I'm not sure how far away from downtown that is. Although, I'll probably have a car, and/or I'll look into the mass transit situation. Is it easy to get into downtown from the suburbs?
During the day, when she is working, I'll probably be downtown quite a bit, checking out Goose Island and a few other places. And, I'm sure, a few to several evenings will be spent in downtown as well.
Might even have to drive over to Indiana to check out Three Floyds.

Well... if you have patience! ;)
There are actually a couple brew-pubs close to Oakbrook, including Emmett's in Downers Grove - very nice. But also Taylor, which doesn't look like much from the outside, but I hear has good beer.

That would be a drive - and check their hours, they aren't open often.

Prairie Rock in Schaumberg isn't far with the tollway being the connection (big tolls, though), and Lunar Brewing is close to Oak Brook too - but I haven't heard much about it.

That Kicks Ass! Stod's coming to the midwest!
You GOTTA go to three floyds man, you'll never be much closer! I know steve already said it, but keep us posted, we'll definitely have to hook up.
Chicago's train system is pretty easy to use. Much easier than dealing with the traffic.

Cool, thanks for the links, Steve. Emmett's looks like a pretty cool place.
Bruno, yeah, you'll definitely have to make the trip over to hook up with all of us. It'll be cool to have a mini Realbeer get together.
Looking forward to it and meeting both of you, and anyone else around who wants to join!

Wish I could be there. I'm going to be in Rockford in the middle of June, but it will be such a whirlwind tour that there's no way I'd have time to visit anyone (other than my relatives - family reunion time).

I found Prairie rock to be "OK"...a couple of good beers, but just decent overall, no real standouts.
Oh, BTW...I'll pencil that in, sounds like a good time for a roadtrip...

It would be great to get together to meet all of you. I don't post much, but I do read alot of what you write, and would like to put a face to the name (except Bruno who can be seen in avatar). Oak Brook is a nice area, and can be reached easily from pretty much all directions. My parents are suppossed to be coming up from Fla. around the same time, but I hope I can find a day to meet.

Hey...what about me? I'd love to meet all you guys, too! I haven't posted in awhile because I have been exploring the Chicago area for good beer.;) [Ever been to Jak's Tap, Steve? Nice!]
Now Fretlessman, Steve is right. Rockford is so close. Surely you can steal an hour! We'd love to come and meet you. And, Stodbrew, it is a cinch getting downtown from Oak Brook. BTW, we are going to LA in May for our daughter's graduation from USC.
And mdblu1, we have to meet you! Bourbonnais is a stone's throw away!
Thanks Steve, for bringing me back here again. I have been away too long!

We've missed you, kalleh! IF there's a way I can pull it off, I'd love to meet you and have you meet my beautiful wife as well. I have a feeling that it will be difficult, though. I'll be at the mercy of those around me, and we won't have transportation. Are there any good places to have a beer in Rockford? Or Rockton?

I don't know about directly from Oakbrook, though... Oakbrook is pretty much straight west of the city Stod. Suburban hell - ;)
Harp - Prairie Rock is head and shoulders better than the Ram chain - their food is pretty good too - it's more centrally located than Emmett's Downers Grove - but Emmett's is pretty easy to get to. Maybe their Palatine location will be open by then.
Fret - check the second link I posted - Carlyle Brewing on State in Rockford. In fact: http://beerme.com/breweries/us/il/7369.shtml There are also some reviews at BA.
Kalleh - haven't been to Jak's, lately my time has been spent mostly in the western suburbs, you know? ;-)
mdblu - c'mon along! And I know there are a few other Chi area members out there... AFA faces, check out the RealBeer Gus thread.

Hey, I'd rather do Chicago than Costa Rica. I was in Costa Rica last March. Not alot of good beer. But excellent fishing. 110lb Sailfish. It is a business trip and I have to go. Other wise I'd be in Chi-town for sure. I'll see what I can arrange.

Hey, Chaz, I will be in Washington DC soon, too. I will be there March 19 - 22. In April I will be in Salt Lake City for nearly a week. I am thinking there isn't any good beer there!
Thanks for the welcomes! Now, let's get a group together! How about when Stodbrew comes. Could you make it here then, Chaz and others? I mean, we could meet at the Clyborne Goose Island, couldn't we, Steve? And then go from there? We Chicago area people could do the driving. Let's invite Richard, too!

My thoughts exactly. My son is looking forward to Germany so he can imbibe too. However, He has also been hinting that he may need a new car. So I sort of gave him a choice....German trip or new car. NOt that we won't do both but possibly only one.

Emmett's is definitely a place we should look into for the get-together -- maybe even the Palatine - Ale House location because it could be in-between our northern and southern contingent (though I think Bruno may be further south than Harp is north...). I may try to contact the head brewer or manager of one of the joints when we settle on a date - maybe do some schmoozing of my own!

Not that you care (and not to steal the thread starter's thunder) but I'll be headed to CHI-Town 27-29 May for the US v. England game. I'll be looking to drink extravagantly (wink, wink, knowhatimeansaynomore) should anyone be of a mind to keep me company/bail me out of jail.

I've always thought the Chicago Rock Bottom to be above the par of the usual RB. Piece and the Map Room aren't terribly far from downtown, not to mention the Clark Street Ale house that Kalleh has raved to me about, but I haven't had an opportunity to visit.
Unfortunately, that's Memorial Day weekend and I'll be in the north woods of Michigan, so I won't be able to provide mail.

Holy crap! I head to all those areas all the time, but don't know of any good brewpubs in the area. I am not asking to tag along or anything, most of the time I go down to that area for work. The company I work for is based out of Machesney Park. My question is. Can someone from that area post a few real good brewpubs, or tours I can go on in these areas of the Chicago area. As a matter of fact I am going down to Machesney park tomorrow. Any help would be apprecitated.

Check that link I posted in one of the first answers to Stod - there's a Brew-Pub in Rockford that I haven't tried before. Wood Dale isn't far from Schaumburg where Prairie Rock is, or try the Ram either in Schaumburg or Des Plaines - but remember to ask for a non-chilled glass. Aurora is home to Walter Payton's Roundhouse, home of America's Brew-Pub, and Arlington is right next to Palatine where the new Emmett's has opened.
AFA tagging along, the more the merrier! Keep watching this thread for more news.

I live in Manitowoc. It is about 35 miles south of Green Bay. The company I work for is in Machesney Park, and there is another branch in Wood Dale, but I actually work up here. I have to go down there from time to time for training, meetings, work functions, ect. It is about a 3 hour drive. Usually when I go down, they put me up in a hotel and there I sit. It would be nice to know of some pubs that serve good beer, or brew on the premises so I can kill a little time when I am down there, I probably wouldn't make a night of it. But having a couple won't hurt none the next day.

Okay, plans are made. I will be arriving in Chicago on April 22nd and I will be staying that weekend at my cousins house in Wheaton. Sunday through Thursday, my wife, son and I will be staying at the Embassy Suites in Oakbrook. And Friday through Sunday we will be staying somewhere downtown. I still need to book a hotel for downtown for the 29th and 30th, any suggestions? I fly home on May 1st. Other than the first weekend and Monday the 25th (Cubs game), I'm free. I will have a car and will be able to travel. So let's hook up at some point, or points, and have a few pints!

Sounds great to me! I'd love to see both of you. Stodbrew, what kind of hotel would you like? You probably should make reservations in advance because at this time of year the hotels fill up. I think the River North area is a good place to stay because it's near Michigan Avenue shopping and close to all kinds of restaurants and night spots. Yet parking will be expensive. Steve, any suggestions of places to stay?
Stodbrew
04-03-2005, 03:29 AM
Thank you for the info, Kalleh. I was looking at the River North area. I would like to stay someplace relatively nice. I was looking at the Westin River North, but they were already booked. I'm hoping to book the hotel in the next couple of days. I have been doing a little research but its always good to get info from people who know the area. As far as parking, it'll only be for two nights, but I'd imagine its still somewhat expensive. Haven't had a vacation in a few years so the expense is worth it. :)
Looking forward to it!

My only problem with getting together on the first weekend, the 22nd thru the 24th, is that I'll be visiting with my cousin and his family. Although, on Sunday late afternoon/early evening, we'll probably be checking into the hotel in Oakbrook so I'll be available then. And if it makes things easier, we can head into downtown Chicago and hook up at Goose Island then.
It would be nice to hook up on Sunday so Blues can join us. Maybe we can meet then and then maybe some other time during the week or the following weekend, too.

I can do either weekend really; we don't have a definite itinerary yet...
Sunday would be oK, but would necessitate driving home Sunday night...Mrs. Harp doesn't drink much, but she would probably rather not have to worry about it.

Well, and now we've got the Dark Lord release at 3F on that friday! Gadzooks!
My wife and her sister are flying into Chicago in mid May and I'd hate for them to waste good carryon space by not bringing home some tasty beers. Are there any one-stop-shop places for them to pick up a few not found out here in the west? I see many of you speak of GI & 3F, are there any others? Which are the "must tries"?

Sams is a very decent store across the street from Goose Island. I went there on Steveh's recommendation. It was well worth the stop.

Okay 'den. Since you're gonna be in Oakbrook from Sunday to Thursday, I was thinking of skipping work early one day that week ('cept Monday) and meeting you at Taylor Brewing or Lunar Brewing - possibly even Emmett's - since they're right in the neighborhood (and I haven't tried the new Taylor or Lunar).
Maybe on that Saturday, since you'll be in the city proper, we can all meet at Piece for some 'za and beer, then wander down Damen toward the Map Room?
Just an idear.

Starting out at Piece on Saturday sounds good too. And I've always wanted to go to the Map Room. And then we can see where it goes from there.

My appointment was cancelled and rescheduled for the 29th:mad: So I guess that nixes that. I finally met up with Meridian face to face yesterday at the Brickskeller. He is a great guy who knows and loves his beers. We spent time chatting with Fritz Maytag, and the owners from Portland Brewing and Mendicino. And we discovered a new beer from Coniston called ..Old Man. we also briefly saw the brewer from Old Dominion. I had a great time and enjoyed myself greatly.

1523 22nd Street. Intersection of 22nd & P streets. 2 blocks from Dupont Circle and Red Line Metro Station.
Yes they have over 1200 beers and are in Guinness Book of World Records for most available. (Soon to lose that distinction to the famed Delerium Tremons bar in Belgium I think.)
The Bricks has primarily bottled beers but recently installed 10 draught lines and they have 3 beer engines I think. Although Dave told me Sunday that his equiptment just broke. He is waiting on parts.

Here are my thoughts I ran past Stod - I was thinking that, since Thursday will be his last day in Oakbrook, maybe we can hook up at Taylor Brewing late in the afternoon/early in the evening Wednesday, have a couple and cruise over to Lunar Brewing for a couple, then down to Emmett's.
I can take half a day off on Thursday to save my skin (and add peace of mind), but it sounds like I may not be able to make a Sat. trip downtown, that's still up in the air.

Well, how late of a night you guys intend on having?
I wasn't planning on coming up mid week, as I wouldn't be able to get there until around 8:00. But if it's going to be a late(er) night, then it might be worth it to drive up after work and meet you guys.
Oakbrook, is that the same place I was for that wedding a couple weeks ago? Or was that Oaklawn. Is there an Oakbrook and an Oaklawn? How confusing!
Anyway, it took me about 2 hours to get to Goose from work when Chaz was here, so that's what I'm going by. I dont' know where any of those places are relative to goose, so I might need some assistance with my timing!

I was planning on leaving work around 4:00 (central) and that would probably get me to Oakbrook and Taylor around 5:00. A couple there, up the road to Lunar, couple there, probably be to Emmett's around 8:00 I'd think.
Is there an Oakbrook and an Oaklawn?
2 separate places. We won't get into Oak Forest, Grove, Lawn, Land, Wood...
I dont' know where any of those places are relative to goose, so I might need some assistance with my timing!
Oakbrook is straight west of the city, right off Interstate 88. If you cruised around the city on 294 you'll see signs for Oakbrook or Downers Grove. I imagine it would take about the same amount of time, factoring in distance vs. traffic vs. highway sizes.

Well, don't forget about me! Is it the Piece, the Maproom or the place in Palatine? We are game for any of them. I know that I am definitely in the minority here, but I don't much like Piece. I will probably get trounced on for saying that, and the truth is, I have only been there once...I suppose I should give Piece (more of) a chance. ;) The beer was good...though no cask ale, but the place seemed like a college-town pizza joint. Besides, I don't know how a respectable beer place doesn't have cask ale. I much prefer Mac's, the Maproom, or Clark Street Ale House. BTW, no one seems to mention Mac's (except for me), and I think the beer and the food there is just outstanding. The music is a little loud though, though I wonder if we could ask them to turn it down.

Piece and the Maproom are within a pleasant walking distance on a nice evening - Mac's is quite a bit bit furtheraway. Park once and walk, good city credo.
I think any establishment where you are spending money would (should) consider your wishes at toning down the din.

Who takes the train into the city most often...
For someone who wants to move to Wicker Park, Kalleh, I can tell you've never stood at the 6 corners of North, Damen, and Milwaukee on a Saturday night, or Sunday night, or Sunday afternoon - or Thursday evening! You forget that one of my best friends lives right in that neighborhood - I visit him quite often, traffic sucks. Never gets into the city, shee.
Bruno, Blues, Stod - sounds like you guys had a good, if not loud, time. I forgot to ask what was on cask at the Map Room. Did you get to Lemming's or Lottie's or Darwin's (sorry if I'm boring you with all of these good beer taverns I've been to in "the city" Kalleh)? How 'bout Clark Street? Let's hear some reports.

Well we were there Kalleh. We got there about 6:30, stayed until about 8:30. We were in the bar level seating, right next to the stairs that lead to the little lower level.
Traffic AND parking was terrible in that whole area.
Every place we went to was loud. Piece was REALLY crowded. We stopped at Lemmings, and walked right into some loud metal music and a bachelorette party (not all bad).
We left there and walked over to Lotties. Had a pint there before on to the Map Room. It was also very crowded and very loud. They were at capacity, and were actually making people wait outside until some people came out.
From there, we high tailed it over to Clark St. Ale House, for some 2 hearted on cask. Always an enjoyable time there.
Sorry we missed you guys, we had a good time!
Fret and Chaz...
I got to 3F right as they were closing, they let me in but they had JUST sold out of the Dark Lord! If we hadn't been stopped by a train, and stuck in suburban Chicago construction traffic, I might have got some! Sorry to dissapoint. There's always next year.

So Stod is another really cool guy. And guess what! He loves to drink and talk about beer! It was definitely cool getting to hang with him a couple times this week. Can't wait to do it again sometime.
Also got to meet BluesHarp and family. He's another really cool guy, and yet another reason why I like coming back to this board so much... We're all so friendly! I'm sure we'll get to hang out again sooner rather than later.

First reports are in...
We had a great time
We met up at Piece Brewing: Me, the BluesWife, her cousin Angie who lives in the city, Bruno and his girlfriend, and Stodbrew who brought along the head brewer from Goose Island Clybourne(sp?)...and his name just fell out of my brain (sorry...). They are acquaintances from years ago in CA.
We had a few beers, starting with Gumball Head (sorry, Chaz), and a few of their own beers.
I had a rye bock which was very malty with a nice roastiness and some definite Doppelbock characteristics. The Weiss beer was also quite good with banana, cloves, and a hint of citrus to balance out the spice.
Lemmings was extremely loud and smoky, and they had just run out of cask Alpha King, so our visit there was "bathroom" brief...
Lotties was nice, not at all crowded. A cool old building, reminded me of several Minneapolis joints.
The Maproom was very crowded; in fact, we were lucky to be able to walk right in...soon after we got there, the doorman's "clicker" indicated full capacity and people had to wait outside until someone else left to get in.
Didn't get to Darwin's, but we finished the night at the Clark Street Alehouse for some cask Bell's Two-Hearted.
The cask version is slightly less "in-your-face" hoppy, but very well balanced and creamy smooth...delicious!
We finally left sometime around 2:00 - 2:30 (I think...)
All in all, another very successful RealBeer get-together; Bruno and Stodbrew are both really good guys.
Unfortunately, Kalleh and her husband must have just missed us; I kept an eye out for them but as Kalleh said, it was quite crowded later in the evening.
I believe Steveh called a time or two to harrass us, but didn't show in person.....
:p

Well at least we got the story straight to tell the women! Wait! Our women were there with us! Uh Oh!
Who took pictures? I got a few short video clips, but that's all.

Oh, gosh, so sorry we missed you guys! We did look all over, but it was terribly crowded. We were at the bar over in the back. We did meet a very nice couple and shared lots of beer stories. They were the ones who recommended the dysfunctionale. We may have even recruited them to the board (another 2 midwesterners...oh...I forgot about the truce!)
At any rate, sorry stodbrew! I really wanted to meet you!
This from the I-always-show-up but-can-never-seem-to-find-anyone woman...
Touché, Steve! I do have problems finding people in bars, don't I? As Steve knows, when we first tried to meet in the Map Room, we both sat beside each other without knowing it!
Obviously we all have a different definition of "bad traffic." I didn't think the traffic was bad at all on Saturday. We got into the city from Winnetka in about 30 minutes. The parking, though, is always bad in that area. Steve, I don't always take the train! :p

Will is actually the brewer at both pubs, Wrigleyville and Lincoln Park (Clybourn). Bruno, you didn't say if he recognized you as the "stalker." Bruno and I schmoozed Will at a Sunday-afternoon tour at the Goose one time, and then when we met up with Chaz and Kalleh last month we pounced on him for questions when he stepped out of the safety of the brew-house.
Guys, did Will say whether or not he knew Jonathan, the brewer at Piece? Would have been fun to shoot-the-s**t with him too...though he was probably down at the Map Room. Drinking Amstel.
Good to hear that Lemming's is pouring cask ale these days.
Kalleh - traffic on the freeway doesn't count, I can make it to Milwaukee and Armitage in 30 minutes (and, as you so deftly pointed out, I'm much further north than you), it's the city streets where the crawl starts.

Yeah, Steve, He does know Jonathan. In fact, he said that all of the Chicagoland brewers are very tight knit, even down to the Floyd family. They were very specific in pointing out that it's usually the brewers who are tight knit, and not necessarily the owners!
He also talked to us about the 17th(?) anniversary beer that he brewed for next month. It's an english bitter that I believe he said he's brewed before, but this year he used Warrior and Palisade hops, and lots of 'em. I believe he said it will be served on cask at some point also.

Bells Two Hearted still on cask. Yum! I thought it was phenominal when we were there. And I really liked Clark Street too.
Thanks for the effort at FFF. You are a good guy to even try.

With regard to Chicago traffic, You guys got NOTHING on DC traffic. I had very little difficulty dealing with any traffic in your fair city.

Steve, our experience with the traffic on Saturday was door-to-door, so it did include a significant amount of Chicago street traffic, of which there was very little.
I am still baffled that nobody here ever talks about Mac's American Bar and Grill, which is in Wicker Park so the same general area. The beer there has never disappointed us, and they alway have 2 wonderful beers on cask. The food, too, is outstanding. I really wish that we had taken Chaz there. When Richard was in town, it was his favorite of all the places he went.

Saturday night was a great time! It was good to see Bruno again, and was good to meet Bluesharp, too! And their wives/girlfriends, too. Both Bruno and Blues are great guys, and I enjoyed hanging out, talking and drinking with them. Hopefully it'll happen again, soon.
And, Kalleh, no worries. It's too bad we didn't get to meet, but, you're right, Piece was really busy. Understandable what happened. There's always next time!
I had a great trip out there, and went to a bunch of great breweries, had a bunch of great beer, and met a bunch of great people. And I managed to spend waaaaaaay too much money at Sam's. I think I had three cases of beer shipped home. Hopefully it'll arrive here in the next couple of days.
Until next time!
Cheers!

 Sams ships?! Or did you do your own shipping? I brought back 6 or 7 cases from my trip. Not all purchased at Sams but a good amount of it was.

Yep, they shipped it for me. Its not cheap, but I didn't feel like bringing 3 cases of beer on the plane with me. :) As it was, i carried on about a case. Love that place. Amazing selection of beer. And other stuff, too. Gonna have to do some online shopping there as well.

Blah blah blah - I know now you're only arguing for argument's sake Kalleh - I've been driving in the city since 1982 or so - the traffic has only gotten worse. As Bruno says, you have to be patient - and I'm usually not while trying to navigate that area.
Don't know about D.C. Chaz, but from what I saw in wandering around there the one time, it didn't look so bad. But the minute one of our Boston crew chimes in, I back off - that city is just not made for cars!
I am still baffled that nobody here ever talks about Mac's American Bar and Grill, which is in Wicker Park so the same general area.
Well, at least a stop south on the Damen bus, but I've been there...and isn't it another I've told you about? And what about the new brew-pub across the street, have you been there yet (must not be open yet, can't find out anything about it)? Then there's Tuman's, just south and west on Chicago that usually has 2 casks on tap...blah blah blah - Now I'm just arguing for argument's sake...let's face it, there's too many good places, too little time.
I am glad to hear Lemming's has a beer-engine now, if only they can keep it stocked. Glad you guys liked Lottie's too, just a cozy little shot and a beer place - with some good brew. The Bucktown pub is just west of there, they have a good selection on tap at most times too - no cask, though.

No, really I'm not. However, I will admit that I love Chicago. I am a city girl at heart (even though I was raised in Wisconsin!), and had it only been up to me, we would have lived in the city. But my husband wanted to raise our kids in the suburbs, and here we are. Someday soon, though, it is back to the city for us! It'll have to be in a strategic section of the city, though, based on the best beer places.;)

I kind of liked that wierd curvy shaped tower on the lake. The condo building. And some of the prices advertised for units under new construction in town seemed quite reasonable.
I'll have to admit something here. Chicago seems to have have way more places with beer engines than DC has. I am envious.
Kalleh, The Mid Atlantic has proved it can beat or match the Midwest posting totals but we still have to catch up with cask beers.
DC traffic is usually rated 2nd or 3rd worst in the nation. LA usually gets top billing.
I live 16 miles from my office. It takes me 45 minutes to an hour on a normal day. 20 on a great day. And I am not usually travelling during peak rush hour.

Denver used to be lousy, but it's a lot better now, and with all the improvements (Ever heard of T-REX?) going on, it's going to be a breeze by the beginning of 2007. But I'm sure that by 2010 it'll be bad all over again...

They have lots of plans and projects to improve our situation but most will be enormous hassels until they are done and will actually impede traffic. By the time they get them all done it will be 2025. I'll be retired and or dead by then.

I just stumbled upon this website and have already picked up a few new things. I live in Wicker Park and was unaware of the Map Room and Lemmings. I am going to have to check them out now.
Chaz/Steve - you can also order online from Sams if your state allows it. The website is www.samswine.com. They just changed web designs and I like their old one better but I think they are still working on this one.

Look for Lottie's off Damen on Cortland, as well as a new joint I found last week - Charleston's. That one is directly north of the Map Room on Hoyne (at Charleston). A cozy little place that you know has been a neighborhood tavern forever, and good brew on tap!
Lemming's has a "sister" bar called The Green Eye at the corner of Milwaukee, Armitage, and Western - right at the blue line stop. It's probably more of a hole than Lemming's, but it's got a decent beer selection.

Welcome, Brewcrew! We have a real crew here in the Chicago area, don't we?
Chaz, I love that "curvy tower" too. When Sammy Sosa was a part of the Cubs team, he used to live there.

Oy vey! I always keep a promise, and I promised not to talk about totals anymore. But...have you seen the midwest totals lately??? ;)
