I know we did a thread that was similiar to this before but for the purposes of naming Bruno's Brewery I thought it might be helpful to talk about what kind of atmosphere or ambiance you prefer in a brewpub / cafe. He is leaning towards an English style pub. Do you prefer that? Lots of dark wood, upholstery, etched glass and the like or do you prefer a divey rocking place with pool tables and juke boxes. How about a modern trendy place with lots of steel, glass and light woods? What do you think would attract the most clientele in an arts / business district with a university crowd on weekends?

I like a little bit of each. I do kinda like the more modern places like BJ's and and The YardHouse. However, a little bar with wood and something like a kareoke is also fun. Personally I hate to go to places with pool tables because around here they are all redneck/white trash places filled with smoke.

Definitely pub styled. Lots of dark wood. I'm usually not a fan of Victorian, being more an Art Deco/Nouveau guy, but there's something about the inviting controlled chaos of a good British Victorian styled pub. In the end anything that's quiet, dark, and set for serious drinking.
I'm also a big fan of the standing bar. Plenty of seats around, but the bar is for action, baby!

So more modern and upscale. While I like places like this too. I often think they are sort of cold and I like cozy.

I like renovated older buldings with character (old factories, railroad depots, barns) I like idea of recycling.
I can't stand some newly build clap trap made of particle board stuck in a strip mall.

not worldly enough, i guess
Oooo 5 here too. The place looked a bit (Mall-ish?) for me. I like the Old English Pub style myself. Many I've seen around here will put the games, music and big screen in the back of the bar leaving the front area for the more important tasks of enjoying good beer and conversation.

I like the old English pub style myself---the more dark wood the better, combined with quasi-low lighting and a nice fire in a fireplace. Music should be present, but low volume, please.

yup, dark wood, low lighting, for the most part quiet, but with an occasional tv to catch yankees games..
i like niche type bars also, one i frequent is owned by a guy who wrote a book called "the shepherd and the knucklehead" - it is about "the duality of man" - how coincidental to be the name of the bar as well... anyway, hanging up everywhere in the place are different stuffed animals or statues or figures, signs etc.. that are all in the book, its cool, the place is very tiny, and there is a plaque dedicated to jack kerouac (spelling?) - he used to frequent the establishment often.. i think you could find the book on the inet, its been published recently, i've been meaning to get one...
another is called "the country inn", it is very old fashoined, antique furniture, has a real wood fireplace which is maintained all night, those cool iron puzzles to play with, its very rustic, no tvs, a killer jukebox w/ no mainstream new crap, trout streams within walking distance, and 300 + beers to choose from...

a third is "the burp castle" in nyc where the servers wear brown monk garb, and speak in almost whispers, keeping their head down, soft gregorian chants play over the speakers, rich colored renaissance paintings adorn the walls...
anyway i like that stuff, you remember that stuff, i feel its good to have something new to look at and spur conversation, brings a fresh feeling to going out and doing something we've all done a million times...

I like Burp Castle as well. Lots of good Belgians on the menu. Plus it is within easy walking distance of McSorleys and DBA.

Country Inn sounds pretty cool. 300 beer and no modern krap playing works. As does the fireplace.
I dunno about the Burp Palace, though. Cool name, but Gregorian chants? That would get old, quick.

You can be soothed by the Belgian selection.

INDEED, once your're soothed and tired of the ambiance, just walk next door to brewski's, or dba, or mcsorley's like chaz suggested
brewskis and the burp castle are next door to eachother and both have the same selection of beers in the same cellar, they call down your beer's number via intercom and some basement dweller picks the order and it comes up on a dummy into the bar, what a job! i'd be sampling the products "to make sure they were fresh" -right! hhmmmmm this Moinette looks past its prime, better consume it in hiding!

OOPS! I forgot about Brewski's. And I also like the fact that these places, especially DBA are near Katz's deli. Great sandwiches there!
