Ok, I'm here In the DFW area for two weeks and am worried I've dropped into a beerless wasteland. Suggestions anyone?

Welcome to the board. I'm sure some of our illustrious Texans will help you out shortly.

If I were you I'd go to beeradvocate.com and check out their beerfly section. BA is more database-oriented; we're just a bunch of geeks who love talking about beer!

I did a search for you using Dallas, Texas as the city, and got this list here. (http://beeradvocate.com/beerfly/list?path=%2Fbeerfly%2Flist&sort=name&name=&city=dallas&s_id=TX&c_id=US&zip=&area=&submit=+search+&brewery=Y&brewpub=Y&bar=Y&store=Y) Hope that helps you out! Welcome to the boards! How'd you find us anyway?

Also Pubcrawler.com has some good listings.

I havent been to many pubs there in a long time, but swing by a Central Market and pick up a few brews to sip on while you check online at the places mentioned above. They've got lots of great beer.

My suggestion is to come to Austin instead.

Yes, if you can wade through some of the verbal wars, lack of a spell checker/grammar checker/sensibility checker, and succinct reviews like "Good place." Can you tell I'm not a fan? I go there more for entertainment now.

Fret covered you with BA. Seems RateBeer has a places section for DFW:

Big D (http://www.ratebeer.com/Places/ShowTour.asp?TourID=5)

Big D2 (http://www.ratebeer.com/Places/Places-Find.asp)

Cowboy country (http://www.ratebeer.com/Places/Places-Find.asp)

Cheers!

I apologize about the last 2 links. Seems you need to enter your own search parameters for both Dallas & Fort Worth in their Places section. Wouldn't let me link 'em.

I usually use pubcrawler more for address information. I rarely read the reviews for most places as I like to make up my own mind. I have read some reviews and if a place is universally disliked I might skip it. There is one brewery in LV that I have no desire to ever visit because it has been universally panned. I have even passed the place before.

LOL, Chaz. I've been to that one and, you're right, you're not missing anything!

Majestic Liquors in Fort Worth usually has a fantastic selection. There are several brewpubs in the D/FW area, though I've only been to one: the Big Buck Brewery and Steakhouse in Grapevine, next door to the Bass Pro Shop. Don't laugh--their beers are actually pretty darned good. There's a relatively new microbrewery in Fort Worth whose name escapes me just now. If I can find the name I'll get back to you. Hope this helps.

And welcome aboard.

Is it Rahrs? I think I remember a friend saying the Rahr bros. were opening a brew pub in FW.

I'll bet they won't call their beers Rahrs. There was an old brewery in Michigan that I think closed in the 50s or 60s called Rahrs. The beer was famously bad beer. I think it was on the U.P.

I read their history. They are connected to the old one I was aware of. Yikes! I know people who hated their beer.

Looks like they've got an interesting line-up: a Helles style lager, and amber ale, and a Schwarzbier. The Helles, and the Amber seem to be good standby's but I wouldnt have expected a Schwarz.

Rahr's; yes, that's it. I have heard good things about the Schwarzbier. I'd like to give that one a spin myself.

Thanks everybody! I did in fact go to Big Bucks last night and would have to say I was unimpressed. Of course the hunting store next-door is quite impressive (want to buy a .50cal revolver?), but from a beer purist standpoint, Big Bucks is chump change. Skip it.
I'll keep working through the other suggestions- thanks for the help!...and yes, If I could just go to Austin that would solve the problem.

Keep us informed. Let us know what your thoughts are on any of the places you visit.

Several Humperdink's in the area. Chain brewpub with so so beer. Two-rows in Addison and Dallas are also good. The best beer selection would probably be at The Flying Saucer in downtown Ft Worth. Two pubs called the Dubliner and the Old Monk are very worthy of your time. If you just want to pick up some sixers and go to the hotel, Hall's Exxon at the corner of 121 and Glade road has the best selection in the Metroplex and it can all be sold in singles. Dont look like much outside but nice inside.

Sorry you didn't like Big Buck. Their everyday menu beers are dummied down, I'll admit. Unfortunately, their food menu has been dummied down, too. I've had better luck with their seasonal beers. did they not have a bock or doppelbock on tap this time of year?

Another good place to buy singles is World Market. They have a pretty good selection.

As for Big Buck, I've always thought their beer was pretty good. I like the blonde and the hefe. The food, IMHO, stinks.

I'm headed to the Flying Saucer on Sat....it's my 30th Bday! I've never been there but heard good things.

Happy Birthday!! My thirties were much better than my 20s. I've bben to the Flying saucer in Raleigh, NC a great beer selection on tap but kind of divey atmosphere. I liked it.

WE HAVE A WINNER! Flying Saucer Ft. Worth!
Just got back from Flying Saucer (see beerknurd.com) and that pretty much solves my problem here.
Couldn't drink too much (sad, huh?) since I had to drive and now have work to do. I had a good dinner but nevermind, the beer selection was excellent and prodigious (50 or 60 taps!). Out of loyalty to everybody who was kind enough to chime in and help me I had an "Ugly Pug" from Rohr brewery, Ft. Worth. I was happy with the beer and the barman told me that on Saturdays you can go to the Rohr (is it rAhr?) place and drink and hang out for dirt cheap- it's not a brewpub but all are welcome sat afternoons.
As for the flying saucer, it's a nice place to go (couches if you can get em) and you'll find more good choices than you'll know what to do with. Nuff said. Cheers fellas....

Excellent! The one in Raleigh has about 100 taps.

Jr. Birdman
03-04-2005, 03:18 PM
Well it might have been a hundred taps, I didn't count them, the point was, there were more than you could handle...hey, that made a good pun.
The only problem with so many taps is keg turnover and (associated with that) beer line cleanliness. I tried a sample of Mackeson Milk Stout and it tasted awful- my suspicion was the above. By and large for most beers there i'm sure it's no issue whatsoever, but the more obscure stuff is always in danger that way. Nothing beats beer right at the source...the best beers I've ever had were consumed within only a few miles of their birthplace and from a newly released keg.
Having said that I recommend the flying saucer whole heartedly...I'm even considering switching hotels so i can be within walking distance of it!!!
