Whats the best way to clean out a dirty air lock? Should we just buy a new one? The inside tube is caked.

I sure would - what are they, $2 at most? Small price to pay for peace of mind. :)

Try soaking it in some warm water and PBW. If you do not have PBW use a mild detergent.
