Now, isn't this just the sort of thing you'd expect me to do? Here we all are being serious about our food endeavors, and I toss this one into the mix. Oh well... here goes...
Porters and Thin Mints. WAAAAY better than I thought they would be. I've heard Guinness XS and Oreos before, and that was okay, but I could really get into this mix. What other combos using the fine fare of the GSA and malted barley beverages could we come up with? Maybe Do-Si-Dos and a Weizen, perhaps?

those thin mints are versatile man! My fav. GS cookie has always been that coconut shredded/carmel/chocolate one. What would that be good with? Vienna Style?

I've always endorsed Oreos and Guinness Extra Stout - got to be the plain old, grocery store, package variety, though. No double-stuff, no low fat, no vending machine or gas-station varieties - they just don't cut it. So I can see chocolate mints going with a roasty porter.

Which ones are the do-si-dos? They renamed some of their cookies recently:
Me love cooookies! (http://www.girlscoutcookiesabc.com/atc/)
I'd think any of the peanut butter varieties, as well as the coconut/caramel ones, would go well with a nice chocolatey porter - not too heavy on the roast. Hell, Boston Beer Works brewed up a mild Peanut Butter Porter with buckets of Teddie PB in it - pure hell filtering it! And Z Street Brewing used to make a kick-butt Coconut Porter - never made it past the keg-only festival pour stage :(
I used to dig thin mints out of the freezer - could pair well with a Irish Dry Stout - Beamish? Maybe some shortbread cookies with a good Pumpkin Ale - Smuttynose?
Damn, I just ate lunch and I'm hungry again!
Cheers!

I always buy at least 12 boxes a year. I put them in the freezer, and I eat one box a month. They all benefit from a few days of sub zero temp. This year I bought 13 boxes, just for good measure. I like to support the troops. Girl scout troops, that is.
We had a young lady come into our store last year, and all in one breath and as fast as she could, she said "would you like to buy some of the most delicious chocolates you've ever tasted?"
How can you say no to that.

I can't wait till mine get here now. I'm not a big cookie eater but I do like those GS cookies. I also put the Thin Mints in the freezer. I am anxious to try one with a porter or stout.

Spaten Optimator...... I just had that for the first time last night.... the finish seemed to be kinda bittersweet (but not bitter in the sense of hops)..... what is that?....... how would some other describe its finish?

A nice Belgian Trippel goes really well with key lime pie...both have that sweet/tart thing going on; play off each other very nicely.
Tonight I'm having Imperial Stout with peanut butter birthday cake...we'll see how that works out.

Bruno,
I am assuming that there is more than one kind of cookie you buy, how do you decide what will be the cookie of the month? Inquiring minds want to know. lol

It probably was the slightest bit of hop character peeking through - or it may have been a spiciness from alcohol too. Good stuff.

Wow! Girl Scout cookies, that's been awhile. Here the scouts come to your door with vacuum sealed crepes. Yeah the thin mint rock. I bet they would go well with a porter (chocolate chip cookies do). Has anyone ever tried a stout float? I've heard of people dropping a scoop of vanilla in there and am curious how that is.

Young's Double Chocolate Stout - a scoop of high-quality vanilla bean ice cream (no lo-fat/carb stuff, please). Mmmmm!
Bonus: take a bar of Godiva/Ghirardelli chocolate and use a cheese grater to cover ice cream with chocolate shavings.
4 out of 5 dentists do not recommend this.
Enjoy!

Well that's made me jealous! We had a hard time finding GS cookies this year; finally found a crew of GSs hanging out at the Kroger parking lot in Rolla so we swung in to get some. I made sure to tell Al : get some of the coconut ones (y'all call them Samoas, but I remember when they were Jumbles!) and Thin Mints (of course) and some of the peanut butter ones, meaning the sandwiches (which were called Gauchos once upon a time). ANY WAY, he managed the coconut and thin mints, but got those chocolate covered peanut butter things. Not the same at all.
This just reinforces the old adage : If you want something done, do it yourself
fretlessman71
03-05-2005, 09:35 AM
Not the same at all, but it might have been all they had, and when he saw one with peanut butter he just grabbed it. And those aren't all that bad, either... who doesn't need more chocolate in their lives? :)
chazwicke
03-05-2005, 11:10 AM
If you are referring to Youngs or SA chocolate brews. Both are quite good.:D I would be better with more of either in my life.
fretlessman71
03-05-2005, 12:49 PM
Well, I was thinking more of the chocolate-covered cookies with the peanut butter patty on top, but those are okay too. Although I still prefer the Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout to Young's for some reason. Chalk it up to still being wet behind the ears or something. ;)

I was really prepared to not like ths SA Chocolate Bock. But my bottle from last year was quite good. Way better than i had expected. I gave a bottle of this years vintage to one of my employees who likes chocolate. She has not yet tried it.

Well, Fret, you are kind to give him the benefit of the doubt. The fact is, he doesn't LIKE the sandwich kind and does like the chocolate-covered kind, and when I complained that he got the wrong ones, he TOOK THEM ALL TO WORK with him! So I didn't even get the benefit of any GS peanut butter. :(

I do it all the time... nice way of having beer for dessert! One caveat- use a decent brand of ice cream, the really cheap stuff has too much air in it. I've made stout floats with several flavors of ice cream, including vanilla bean, chocolate, coffee (yum!) and even pumpkin (suprisingly good!). Oh yeah, you can make a float with porters, too.

I think Breyers may be based in Richmond. I think I heard that somewhere. Also, I'm not sure B & J own their company any more. I thought they had sold it some time ago. Not sure about any of this. B & J were pretty typical Vermont hippies.
