You don't like the taste of beer and you drink for the wrong reasons.
Alcohol is a depressant and any mood control you experience is an illusion.
You are walking a dangerous path. Using alcohol as crutch of any kind can only end badly.

Bud Light depresses me, and I haven't had one in probably 10 years!

It is a very interesting thing to post about Bud on this board. The majority of us are pretty non-judgemental, but we reserve the right to scoff and playfull make fun of what we call "swill".
Butch, there is really a whole new world for you to explore with beer. Think of it this way; Why eat the same cheese-whiz sandwhich every day, when you could sometimes have a gourmet meal? There is nothing wrong with your cheese-whiz sandwhich (I suppose), but why not at least attempt to explore other options?
To quote a wise man (or a cheesy action movie), "I can only show you the door, you must walk through it". If you are interested in learning more about beer, you are in the right place. And you will find many good people who are willing to help you down that exciting road.

butchbeerman, welcome to the board. If you look around you'll find that we're talking about a whole bunch of beers that you've probably never had - I recommend highly that you begin experimenting a little more. Life's too short to only order one dish at the same restaurant, you know?
One thing you mentioned that concerns me is how you're high strung, and that you drink to calm your nerves a bit. I have a feeling that if you did something physical to relax instead - jogging, racquetball, basketball, hiking - you'd be able to enjoy your beer a lot better. There's a whole new world of beer enjoyment, and it doesn't have to have anything to do with the effect of alcohol on our systems. (Personally, I'll only have 1 or 2 a night because I can't stand being out of control.) Browse around, and by all means drink your Bud - but take some time to ENJOY your Bud, and try not to be focused on the effect of it.
Not sure how Vodka and 7up helps you to concentrate... but to each his own. ;)

Fret's post in another thread made me realize that my off the cuff comment about Bud Light, while not intended to insult the poster, may have come off that way. Butchbeerman, if you were insulted, please accept my apologies. Drink what you like, but don't be afraid to expand your horizons. Just like Wonderbread is not the only type of bread out there, although it may be your favorite, there are many varieties of beer out there as well and no reason you only have to drink one kind! Welcome to the board! :)

Welcome...and like has already been said, there is a whole world of different beers. Try some of the microbrews from your area; sometimes the imports from stores have been sitting for a long time and are well past their prime...you owe it to yourself to try some "fresh" quality beers.
Cheers!!

...can you tell us where "Amityville" is?? ;) That may lead to some good recommendations.

Butch- I think many would agree that a good stepping stone would be a Sam Adams Boston Lager. I would recommend it anyway. After that maybe a Sierra Nevada Pale Ale. Then keep your eyes open to whats being discussed around here on these forums and give some of those a try.

Amityville? As in the Amityville on LI right by Lindenhurst? Do they still have those old Indian Grave markers right off the road on the way to "eat a peach"?
My father grew up in Amityville and his younger brother was friends with Ronnie Defeo back in the day.

Hey butch - something I haven't seen on this thread yet, so I'll point it out - when you go and get some more Sam Adams, pour it into a pint glass (not chilled, please) instead of drinking it straight from the bottle. It's more fun to look at, but more importantly it tastes a lot better because your nose is now a big part of the tasting process. Let us know how you come along, okay?

Ronnie Defeo is the guy who killed his family. Big thing when I was a kid, we used to ride our bikes over to Amityville and see the house.
I grew up in North Babylon and Garden City and my folks are from Lindenhurst and Amityville. Man I miss Long Island!

Not sure if he did or did not but on Long Island when I was a kid in the late 70's and a teen in the early 80's almost all of the Island was associated with the Mob in some way or another.

Butch, welcome!
Since you enjoy Bud, you may want to give Pilsner Urquell a try - they are similar in style, but Urquell has more 'beer' in it (malt & hops). I recommend you try it out of the keg at a bar, or if you buy it in the store, get a 12-pk (some of us have found that the 6'ers can be 'skunked' due to light getting to the beer).
I also recomend if you do branch out and try other beers, that you taste them before you have your regular choice. I am interested to hear what you think of what you do try. Again, welcome.

Yeah, Long Island is pretty cool. I grew up in Sayville and now live in Patchogue, right near the Great South Bay. I actually worked in Amityville at Cameta Camera for a couple of years and thats all you heard about "the horror house". Nice area though, good place to eat over in Massapequa is Big Daddy's, if you like cajun you have to try it.http://www.bigdaddysny.com/
