I have a quick qustion that stems from reading "The new complete joy of home brewing" by Charlie Papazian. It says to strain the hops before chilling to a pitchable temp. This was on pg. 304 in the advanced part. I brewed with my main hops in a bag, but didn't use a bag for the aroma hops (last two minutes). I cooled the wort and then strained the aroma hops before draining into the fermenter. Any problems with this?

That's ok. Lots of us cool first then strain.

Thanks for the quick reply. Can you think of any reasons why he would of stated this?

FWIW, after participating in a number of threads on a related topic, in my last batch (all grain) I just tossed the hop pellets in loose. No straining. What didn't settle out in the bottom of the pot after chilling, settled out nicely in the early stages of fermenting. I took the advice of several of our very learned bretheren and stopped worrying...;)

Rather than start a new thread, I've never strained yet. The hop glop at the bottom, most of it remains in the bottom of the brewpot as I pour the wort into the fermentor, but some gets in. It seems to work it self out mostly in primary, but after secondary, there's no glop or floaties getting into the bottle.
Is there still a reason to strain?

I leave them as well. There is some research that it actually helps fermentation.
