View Full Version : Good beer to convert a Coors Shite drinker.

To my eternal shame, my sister is a coors shite drinker (Although her taste in wine is somewhat more refined).

I am going to invite her over to one of my, help yourself, selection of food, nights and I was thinking I might try to convert her.

I will be laying on a selection of cheeses, some breads, home made Salsa & Guacamole, pasta with home made Pomodoro and Arrabiata sauce, olives and a green salad.

I have a reasonably good beer shop locally and can get German, Check, Belgian, English, Irish, etc.

What would people suggest I offer her?

Yikes! Coors! Try a pilsner or a lighter German lager to break her in gently.

Perhaps I have painted her a little worse than she is.

She has tried pilsner before. We lived in Germany when we were kids and we have both been back to visit. For some reason the Beer snob bug just didn't bite her on her visits and she has slipped into the fizzy yellow water category.

I was thinking I might try for something a little more exotic. Maybe a Heffe Weizen or a Belgian Ale.

Defibrillator beers! Shock her beer tastes back to life.

Hmmm....I dunno, Guild. Belgian ales (especially the trippel/strong ale examples like Duvel, Delirium Tremens, etc.) might be a little overwhelming, especially to the uninitiated.

How about a good Belgian Witbier, though? A good hefe might be good, too. I would shoot for something in the low to mid range of abv, like no more than 5.5% or so.

Of course, Britain has several wonderful pale ale/bitter offerings, which I'm sure you'll have on hand anyway.

My sincerest best wishes go out to you in your quest for her converting!!:)

I think a Witbier is the way to go. Light, sort of sweet, lots of character, interesting to look at. Nothing sneaky or too bold.

THEN hit her with a Flanders or something.... :D

I'd love to create a beer called "1/2 Wit". You know, for some of my "challenged" friends who don't realize what they're missing.

All this silliness not wit-standing, how about Fuller's London Pride. One of the beers that got me going. Not too much of anything but still really good.

Don't waste your tears - just find another team.

Now Fret, where would we Red Sox fans be if we did that? Granted, before last year it always seemed miraculous when we weren't ending the season in the cardiac ward, but Oh, the joy when it all comes, finally, together.

And Sean, some good choices; a belgian whit would be a good start, but I'd say throw in some, how was it put, defibrillator beers as well. You never, ever know what will jump-start the taste buds. Good luck!

At least you've had, for the most part, a reasonably good team to root for that made the playoffs and even won a few games. Having said that, I still don't know how you've tolerated that for so long. The Seattle Screaming Seachickens will forever be the red-headed stepchildren of the NFL, and there's really no hope for them. Seattle, WA, is a professional football outpost... and have you noticed that many of the players there can't wait for their contracts to expire so they can leave? They're the only team besides the Houston Texans who haven't won a playoff game in the last 20 years, and they never get blown out of a playoff game - it's always a last-minute heartbreaker. ALWAYS. The last 5 playoff games that the 'Hawks have played - all losing efforts - have been decided on the final play of the game. Reason to hope for next year, maybe? Maybe after the first four times. But I've had it. If you knew in advance (like I do in my heart) that your favorite team in a given sport was never going to win another playoff game, would YOU still root for them? :(

She turned up with a load of the usual shite in a bag but I persuaded her to have Wit Beer anyway.

She liked it and afterwards commented on how tasteless the Coors was in comparison.

A small step but it's something I can build on. She family; she can't get way!

A small step; a small step, indeed! You might have just won the turning point battle in the war! Great job! Now all you have to do is send her some more witbiers when you find them and continue to nurture her interest. I think you've got a live one, Séan! :)

Yep, you mave have her hooked but now you have to reel her in.

Yeah - if she still drinks the Silver Mullet part of the time and witbiers the other part, she'll only be a "halfwit." Be sure to tell her that.... ;)

I liked the suggestion of Fullers too.
