Anyone ever use twist off caps to bottle their beer in? Everything I have read says to avoid them, but I have talked to a few people that claim they have no problem using them. Have any positive or negative experiences bottling in twist offs?

I used twisties when I first started brewing because I was too cheap to spend the $$ for good bottles. I didn't have any problems. I soon saved up enough non-twists to throw the others in the recycling.

The problem with twisties is the thinner glass at the cap. You run a greater risk of breakage and not getting a proper seal.

I agree. Nothing wrong with these bottles but you will probably wnat to move to higher quality bottles sooner or later. Worst case scenario is that you lose a beer here or there due to a bad seal.

Personnaly, i only use EZ-cap bottles (plus some belgium flip tops htat i picked up somewhere.) see here (http://fox302.com/index.pl?s=vf&user=YamahaXS&category=Pale_Ale&file=PaleAlewithbottles.jpg) for a pic :D

A few batches ago I bottled in Sierra Nevada twist-offs that I had lying around. I was nervous at first because while crimping the caps on, I never really felt that I got a good tight seal like on a regular bottle. as it turned out, the entire batch turned out fine with none leaking. I could even twist off the tops with my hand without using a bottle opener. The only reason I used twist-offs was because I ran out of reguler bottles.
I actually threw all of them away after drinking all the beer because I do not want all of mywork and anticipation that goes into brewing to go to waste by using cheap bottles....

speaking of bottles, and capping - has anyone had good, consistent luck finding cap "over-runs" (to purchase) to use for capping their brew?

I order plain caps so I can mark/date my beer, but this is where i order from and they have promo/overrun caps for 1.99 per gross

Here is the link, it's down on the lower right side of the page.

My friend gets the overruns and he's come up with some unique looking caps. Never know what you are going to get though.

Where in the world do the cap over-runs come from? How can the manufacturer have too many caps?

Im not quite sure of what you guys are talking about when you say the twist offs are poorer quality.

I've brewed about 25 batches and used all twist off bottles. 341ml bottles. I live in Canada, and the bottles here are fine.

I have yet to break one (except a dropped one) or had one not seal. And i have yet to have a contaminated bottle due to twisties. Perhaps in some regions your bottles are insufficient, but the Canadian bottles seem to be just fine. Also, i dont like collecting my bottles when i leave somewhere, usally too drunk to do that, they often get left behind or left in the woods. Why buy bottles when twistoffs work fine, and TWIST

my two cents?
