View Full Version : What's going to happen to my hops?

I used hop pellets for my latest brew, this is the first time I've tried using hops. They disolved into the wort, which I combined with water and put in my fermenter. I didn't strain the wort when adding it to the fermeneter.
What's going to happen to the hops? Are they going to settle to the bottom, or show up as little particles in my beer later on?
These are hopped pellets I bought seperately, they weren't mixed in with the extract.

Most will dissolve into the wort or eventually become part of the trub. Once you rack over into your secondary you will be fine.

I tie a small piece of windowscreen around the intake of my racking cane when I transfer to the secondary. This usually keeps out most of the larger hops/grain pieces that could otherwise make it through.

It is okay!!! Take a deep breath and relax.............
At the end of boil grab a steel sani'd spoon and give the wort a gentle whirlpool for about 20 seconds and then let it come to a rest on its own. This whirlpool will help create a tight trub pile and allow you to knockout while leaving a good portion of the trub behind.

Yeah like brewmonkey said I use the whirlpool to create a hop pile and then siphon from the very edge of the kettle.
I do it after the cold break to try and collect the cold break proteins in with the hops.

Hmm... but I've already got in the fermenter and it's bubbling away. Looks like a lot of the hops have ended up in the airlock....
I might use a secondary fermenter. Will the hops be at the top or the bottom, or both? The concern I have at removing the top is taking the yeast out with it.

That may be what is called the Krausen and that will happen.
Do you have an extra airlock? Sani it up and replace it.

Relax about the hops in the fermentor. Keep an eye on the blow-off tube. The hops will eventually settle out of the beer to the bottom of the vessel. Rack into a secondary fermentor as soon as the primary has slowed. If you leave the beer on the hops in the primary you might start to get off flavors as the hops will start to decompose. However, don't worry and have a cold beer. When the primary slows rack into the secondary and let sit for another week or two. I usually place the secondary into a water bath to hold a lower temp longer and slow the secondary fermentation. This will lead to a clearer and crisper tasting beer. Good luck
