Went to New Seasons Market yesterday to pick up some better beers. I went with the intentions set on barley wines. My wife said "let's pick up some Belgian beers too". Went looking at what they had and mixed in with the usuals was this champagne style bottle with a funny looking name on it. We thought we'd give it a try.

I am not good at describing the flavors I am experiencing while drinking so I will just say this was a very good brew. The bottle describes it like this:
Blond, robust, smooth and fruity with a delicate, spicy flavor.
That pretty much says it. The thing I really liked is it is a 8%'er but it is light and dry like some of the lower abv beers. This is one you could enjoy on a hot summer day. I think I will get some to save just for that.

Take this advice!! This is definately one of my favorite Belgians. Have you ever had it in the appropriate glass? It's a bit large, but it's really one of the prettiest beers (along with Duvel, Orval, and Guinness) when properly poured on the right glass.

i forgot, that is a nice glass, with the fleur de lis (sp) around the base of the chalice. it was always nice to order this on tap at the map room and get it in the proper glass. i agree with you, that certain beers (like the ones you mention) seem even better when served in the glass they were made for.

on the other hand, the times ive had saison dupont on tap, it comes in a pretty plain tall glass that doesn't seem to be very flattering to the beer, but i guess it fits the plain farmhouse style.

thanks for the review, i should have the tripel karmeleit again soon.

The glass I was using was a tulip shaped 6 oz. stemmed taster I got from one of the beer fests. It gives me some of the best results when sampling brews.

On these recommendations I bought a bottle today - I'll report back tomorrow.

First a question. How do I put a quote from a former post in my reply? It's probbably sitting right in front of me, but I can't figure it out.

And because I can't quote studentofbeer I'll just respond to what you said about Saison Dupont. Is that a real Saison Dupont glass you had? I've ordered it a few times at 't Brugs Beertje (best beer bar in Brugge) and it came in a goblet with the Moinette logo on it. I don't know if the brewery has multiple glasses, but this cafe usually has the appropriate glass for all of the +- 300 beers that they have. If anyone knows let me know.

In the bottom right corner of the box of whose quote you want to put in your post, there's a button that says "quote". Click on it, and you will automatically be sent to the regular reply area and you go from there.

well you are in belgium, so i will defer to the fact that their glasses are probably correct. I am pretty sure it said saison dupont on it, but who knows if that is its "official" glass. I had it at the hopleaf, a good belgian restaurant/bar in chicago. whenever i drink a saison at home i generally serve it in my ommegang goblet/chalice.

300+ beers, all in their proper glasses...

...what a coincedence, i just had one last night... perfect for this springish time of year in my opinion because as light as it is, being a triple, it is quite hearty as well. It is a three grain beer,
using the usual barley, plus oats for smoothness, and wheat for freshness and drinkability. As I took a fairly large sip I really concentrated on the taste as I began to turn the bottle to read the back, and I literally thought to myself "Blond, robust, smooth and fruity with a delicate, spicy flavor." and that is exactly how they describe it themselves. The head on this beer is almost as insane as Duvel, so lucious delicate and thick.. Like I said though, pretty hearty for a hot summer day, I'd rather go lighter as Belgians go.. but one of my favorites indeed!!!

Where'n the heck are you? Has it turned to Spring in the South or parts of Europe? Supposed to be a high of 28°F here in Northern Illinois tomorrow!! That $10 sixer of Sierra Nevada Bigfoot is sounding better and better! ;)

yeah, but in June when it's 80ºF here, and 145º down in Texas, then we'll see who's laughing...

Yeah - you don't live here for the summers - but the rest of the year is very, very nice. The year(~2001) it was 115F on my car thermometer was just plain stupid - the hottest spot on the planet that day according the weather guy.
